Chill man. Religious accommodation isn’t a radical idea.
Bro... Totally missed what I’m saying. I’m not arguing against religious accommodation. I’m more arguing that if we are cool letting some people wear beards then let’s wear beards. I just think we need to stop having a million exceptions and just set a minimum acceptable standard, from dress and appearance to pt testing.

I never thought that I would be on Baseops arguing with people about such a common sense issue. Y’all have fun, enjoy your VO2 max of whatever the fcvk it is.

Not sure what your point is? You want the freedom to wear a turban even if it’s not part of your religious observance? Or a non-religious beard?
My whole point is what’s the point in having different standards for different groups? That’s not a standard by definition. I have no issues with beards as long as that is the “standard”. I’m not ready to die on this hill, but I just think we need to have some blanket standards in place and not try and have a million different rules for a million different people.

So if turbans and beards don’t affect combat readiness or have a negative effect on the force, again I ask, why not just have one standard for all?

If you’ve been in the Air Force for longer than 15 mins, you realize that standards for men and women are way different and it goes way beyond the PT test.

1.) I think that's the incorrect usage of "Okay Boomer."
2.) What I said is absolutely 100% correct and you can google and watch Dr Neil Baumgartner yourself (guy who designed AF PT test) and he will tell you the same. He selected the standard of 45-60 VO2 max because it was heavily correlated with lower risk for diabetes and heart disease. He used a large study by the Cooper institute to determine that women who run between XX:XX and YY:YY have a VO2 MAX of 45-60 and men have to run significantly faster to demonstrate the same VO2 max. Regardless, the entire intent of the test is to measure your VO2 max. He even discusses that he wanted to get rid of Push-ups and Situps all together because they don't scientifically assess anything and have no associated standards, but he was legit over ruled by boomers in that case who argued a military organization should do push up. (which is a really really dumb reason to do push-ups)
Anyway, the point is, we don't need this assininely strict interpretation of uniformity to have esprit de corp or good order and discipline. Women have been integrated for nearly 40 years now with different dress and appearence standards and hair standards and while the AF is a burning dumpster fire, there are about a million things I can point fingers at because I think it's unfair women can wear skirts and I can't.
It totally is the wrong use of boomer. That’s what makes it funny.

We do have the same standards for PT. The standard is you have to maintain a level of fitness that promotes an extended life and lower health care premiums. The standard for women is nearly identical to men. It's designed to assess a VO2 max between I believe 45 and 60. It just so happens women need a lot less performance to do that.
Okay Boomer.

Same on making it my full time job till corrected. Expect them to just start garnishing wages until they pay off your “debt” had it happen to me as a young Lt, with no money, student loans and a newborn. Went to my Commander who said, “that sucks, you should of had an emergency fund” UFB. On a related note, I have $11k in Guard pay still due to me from 2019 that hasn’t paid out yet. It’s amazing how difficult they make these things.

I say if they let them wear beards, we should all be allowed to wear beards. I also believe in one standard PFT for men and women. Special jobs can set their own standards that fit with their requirements. Blanket minimum standard across the service. No more catering to special interest groups, either it meets standards or not. If the standards aren’t applicable anymore then don’t make exceptions to policy, just change the fcvking standard.

Try to find a unit with ONE alpha alert. USERRA Exempt orders and a pretty awesome deal depending on the unit.

If I may ask, why do your friends dislike AD? I have an idea of the differences, but I'm trying to get a sense of which one is the biggest for people. Is it a collective combination of 1) control over location / deployments 2) ability to have a civilian career on the side if you want and 3) more relaxed environment? Or is there anything else too that I'm missing. I was active duty myself, and honestly didn't know a thing about the guard / reserves side until I started researching it actively 2 months ago.
Do you like anal? Not giving, but receiving. With no lube. And kind of like a hate screw kind of way. Not tenderly and sensual, but like a step below rape.
But in all seriousness active duty is not all bad. Some of it was actually pretty fun and I met the best people that I could ever meet. But if I had the option of doing active duty are going to the air National Guard or reserves, I would pick the air National Guard or reserves any day. Being on a 12 year prison sentence and unable to say no or leave is about the worst feeling you can have. Especially if your family situation changes between now and then. You just never know what your life is going to be like 12 years down the road.

Wear the ball cap.
Ha ha. I didn’t realize that was a hot topic item. Thanks for the tip! At my Guard base everyone wears them.
Just to be clear this is for those times I’m out in the system or deployed. I’m at one of the few remaining “old guard” units and no one here cares about stupid stuff like that.

So what are E-9s out doing these days as part of the OCP flightsuit uniform police? I miss getting Chiefed ever since I started wearing the two-piece a couple days a week. With the green bag I used to get talked to for rolling up my sleeves until that became legal again, so then I started leaving both lower cap pockets unzipped, but that didn’t seem to catch any E-9s outside of Maxwell. Somebody please help me out. I don’t know how much longer I can go without being “mentored”. I’m really starting to wonder if they care about me anymore.

Columbus is not bad at all. There is stuff to do around there and some decent cities within driving range. Just thank God you aren’t at Laughlin.

Having seen enough of OSI’s shenanigans in my time, my biggest fear is ever being in their gunsights. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them as a DO and also watching the aftermath through a court-martial. Good God.

Thanks guys. They finally got my paperwork done and it’s paying out this week. It was an absolute mess and the incompetence at my base was astounding.

My In Service Recruiter said I could not have a set date of separation while applying for Palace Chase. I wanted to hedge my bets same as you, to avoid a 180. So you’ll have to choose one or the other, I believe. Also the built up leave probably won’t protect you because they’ll just make you sell it back instead of letting you take it as terminal.
So you can roll the dice with PC and maybe be out in June and have terminal prior to that. Or you can set a separation date for December which might buy you an even earlier 180 day to meet the timeline.

Good gosh. Sucks to hear that things have gotten worse since I left. I’m rooting for you! I still think PC is your best option though.

Air Force allows beards & turbans and such
in General Discussion
Posted
I’m from the south so I can’t really put into words well what I’m trying to say. I think if anyone makes us a better fighting force then we need to make a way for them the be a part of the team. If they need exceptions to make that happen then we need to look at the reg and ask “why was this an issue to not wear headgear or have beards?” If we come to the conclusion that it was just a rule we made up for the sake of uniformity, maybe we just eliminate the rule altogether. Then woila, no exception is needed because now a well groomed beard is uniformly acceptable (i.e. the German military).
But the military is not a social experiment and if it comes to the conclusion that someone being in the military is not in the military’s best interest (a paraplegic fighter pilot), then I would say, thank you for your offer of service, let’s find somewhere better suited for that service.
