  1. Before I get someone’s guess at my base, I figured I would reach out to the bros on here.

We have a Title-10 mission at my base and we get fed man days from AMC and TACC quarterly through the M4S system. Last year I had guys that were on orders the whole year (365 days+) and it got me thinking, if or how could I get them a pilot bonus.

Has anyone had any experience getting a traditional pilot on full time title-10 orders eligible for the bonus? I figure this could potentially help retain some guys if I can figure out a way to put some extra $ in their pocket.

  2. Was watching local FL news on an overnight recently and heard that if an insurance company goes insolvent, other FL insurers are kinda on the hook to cover.  Then they posted Ian damages exposure.  USAA has $6.8 billion in Hurc-Ian exposure, one of the highest.  Did some looking and saw this on Miami Herald:
When property insurers become insolvent, the nonprofit Florida Insurance Guaranty Association typically steps in to pay claims. Known as FIGA, the organization has authority to levy “assessments,” which are costs passed on to insurance policyholders across the state. FIGA already is using money from assessments of 1.3% and 0.7% to pay costs related to other insolvencies. Its board last month approved a plan to borrow $150 million, with the debt financed by extending the 0.7% assessment through 2023.
So its more like FL policy holders are on the hook to cover insolvencies.  Oh, the start of that article says 6 FL insurance companies went under this year.  And USAA has a huge exposure and I bet everyone's rates go up to cover.
    Time to switch?

Back when I lived in Florida, they wouldn’t even provide insurance for my house in the middle of the state. I couldn’t get any further from the coast. I switched everything at that point.

  3. A dude in my SWA new hire class (former AF pilot) did a year at SWA, leave SWA for American hated it and is now trying to get back to SWA.

All goes to show you that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Compared to AD any airline is better.

My best advice is whatever you do, live in base. Commuting sucks.

  4. Sleep Apnea and the FAA

As far as getting your FAA medical it is pretty much a non event. You will walk out of the Flight Surgeon with medical in hand.

As far as keeping your medical, the FAA requires 75% usage at 6 hours a night. You are required to print off your machines data and submit with your medical each year.

50% VA disability is nice, but realize that you will need to get a travel CPAP in addition to your main CPAP for all your overnights.

It sucks wearing the mask, but you do really feel better in the mornings.

  5. Advice:

    AA vs SWA.

I need to stay located for family in Phoenix and my priority is scheduling flexibility vs pay and I’ll be a TR reservist.

    Any words?

SWA: Phoenix is fairly senior but prior to COVID the wisdom was that a new FO would hold any base they wanted within 6 months. With us hiring 1,500 new FOs this year, I hope that goes back to the norm.

Mil leave at SWA is about the easiest thing I have done. Fill out a form on your company issued ipad and you are done. No sending in orders or getting harassed by anyone. I am not even sure if SWA truly tracks the 5-year USERRA limit, unless you were to drop a long term AGR order or something.

As far as scheduling flexibility, SWA is pretty good. When I was commuting I would usually just give my whole schedule away and then pickup out of give away at my local base where I wasn’t senior enough to hold. We have something close to 6,000 FOs that all fly the same equipment as you and a good majority of them are greedy who will pick up your flying if you let them. I could clear a whole months schedule in about a day or so.

Pay lags behind the big 3 airlines in years ~2-4 but somewhat catches up according to what I’ve seen our Union post. Of course Capt upgrade is probably 10 years+ and that would still require you to commute to Oakland. We are in contract negotiations now and it seems like the pilot group is all pulling the same direction so hopefully we get some good meaningful improvements.

Hope that helps! I don’t come on here much anymore but I stop by now and then to check on all you guys. Let me know if you all have any questions!

  6. Don't Look Up is the latest Adam McKay flick (Anchorman, The Big Short, Vice).  Had a limited run in theaters, and now being pushed hard on Netflix.
Clocked in at 2:18, which was way too long.  Could have been trimmed to 90-100 minutes and been a better movie.
It was OK, something entertaining to watch while in a post Xmas-feast coma, but that's about it.  It's being billed as this kind of sharp, biting satire; poking fun at modern politics, social media, etc.  But they take every point they're trying to make, and just beat you over the head with it.  It gets tiresome quick.

Disagree, respectfully of course. Don’t Look Up was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I hate being preached to by the Left or the Right. This ended up being left wing propaganda for a painstaking 2:18. It wasn’t even entertaining. Skip it. You will thank me.

  7. Hey gents, wondering if anyone knew where to start on this one. I’m deployed as a DO and got into a run around with an over-zealous HARM chick about needing an interfly agreement for me to put one of my ACs with another units crew to fly (AC of original crew was DNIF). If they are all CHOPPED (sp?) Title 10 assets and crew members, do I really need to go get interfly agreements from their home units??? That seems stupid.

  8. WORST officer I have ever run across in 21 + 12 years in and around Big Blue.  Would've fit right in with the worst of the "What's Wrong with the Air Force" thread.
But, since it's not a public information release like a commander being formally relieved, I will respect privacy issues.
But when you are disappeared over a weekend from your office and given three months to "prepare for an upcoming PCS" to a non-command base-level job, I'm pretty sure it's over.  Certainly hope so.  And hope that getting fired stares him in the face every day until the final one.
Still, the association caused me to re-evaluate my life and decide to retire at age 56.  Not all bad came from it.
    Adios, indeed, MF'er.  Adios indeed...

Definitely need to figure out a name for this one...
