  1. One question: which airline has gone to the telecommuting option?  I'm beginning to think I may have ed up with my choice of companies.
Congrats, brother!  Glad to hear things have smoothed out post-AD.

Thanks brother! I saw the writing on the wall with my airline and jumped to a semi-full time guard job which quickly went to telecommuting. It was awesome. For almost 8 months I could work from home and date my future wife!

  2. I am happy for you but I also want to know more about the crazy nurses

Ha. I knew that would come up. Here was the craziest one...

Meet this girl on bumble, cute girl, she’s a nurse practitioner for a burn unit. We talk for a while and then I ask her to meet for lunch. All in all she seems pretty normal. We just didn’t really click over lunch in my opinion. I was pretty bored and I felt like I was having to carry the conversation. I tell her nice to meet her and get on with my life.

A week goes by and she texts me asking how I was doing etc. Eventually it turns to relationships and she mentions how she can’t wait to get married and have kids, all guys are pigs, all they want is sex, etc, etc... How it was so refreshing that I didn’t try to sleep with her during our lunch date. I tell her that I think we may want different things, I can’t have anymore kids and I am never getting married but I am more than happy to be her friend but it would never be more than that. She says that’s totally fine, that is all she wants too. (Hmmm... okay, not what you just finished saying but that’s fine.)

Maybe two weeks or so later I’m sitting on my couch on a Tuesday night watching Netflix. My kids are with their mom for the week, and Nurse girl texts me asking me what I am up to. We haven’t texted at all since the last conversation. I tell her I just ordered a pizza and am watching some opioid documentary on Netflix (my sister is a doctor and she told me it was good... it wasn’t). She asks if she can come over because she had been wanting to watch it.

So I know that I am super naive about all this dating stuff. I met my ex in high school and was with her almost 20 years. So I say sure, I have nothing else going on. I give her my address. She shows up, we eat pizza, watch the documentary and it’s late and time for her to leave. (She says she has to be up at 4am for the hospital and it’s 10pm). The chick won’t leave my house and now she won’t shut up. She keeps going on about how cool it is that I am in the military and an airline pilot, how respectful I am, that I haven’t tried to kiss her (I’m just not into her at all, she’s really annoying). I ask her why would I try to kiss her, we had decided just to be friends and that there was no romantic chemistry. The most annoying thing she kept doing was after she would talk for a while she would go “hmmm” as if she was thinking about something and then look at me. I kept saying, well it’s late, you probably need to get some sleep, but it was like she didn’t even hear me.

Finally after one of her “hmm” moments she starts leaning over to me. The tv is still on and the remote is by me on the couch so I think she’s reaching for the remote, nope! She leans over on me and starts kissing me. Because I was sitting facing her on the couch she pushes me backwards and basically crawls on top of me. I seriously didn’t know what to do. I freaked out and immediately thought to myself. “If I don’t let her down easy, this chick is going to say I assaulted her or something” (this happened to a guy in my guard unit). She slides her hand down to my jeans and starts to try to unlatch my belt. I tell her, “wow this is awesome, but I have to go pee”. She gets off of me and I run to the bathroom. She tells me when I get back she’s going to give me the best sex of my life (paraphrased and edited to keep this PG) Normally that would be awesome, but this chick is crazy and not in a good way. I take a couple mins to figure out how I am going to get her to leave without her destroying my life.

I walk out of the bathroom and I go: “Sarah, I think your awesome and I would love to have sex with you tonight, but I feel like I haven’t healed from my divorce and I still love my ex-wife (barf). You kissing me made me think of her and how much history we had together. If you still want to date me, we definitely can try, but I think we are going to need to go really slow so I can get over my ex”

I guess talking about your ex wife is the key because she is like “oh I wasn’t going to have sex with you” Then I deal with her crying and complaining about how all the bad guys want to bang her and how all the good, decent ones keep telling her they aren’t over their ex or that they aren’t ready for anything serious.

Finally she leaves and although she texted me a couple other times asking me to come to her house or do stuff, I always had something else planned.

I know some of you are probably thinking that sounds awesome and want her number... others think I am crazy for turning her down. I’m serious though, she was crazy-crazy.

So that’s the story of how I almost got raped in my own house...

  3. So back on topic, heard SWA flushed the CJO poolies, which is not having a lot of folks feeling the "LUV" right now.  Also, internal RUMINT with SW critters in my unit indicate they feel somewhat encouraged a potential aggressive early out program extended to folks as young as 57 (early retirement payout benefits not to exceed 5 years) may indeed have the kind of traction that could stave off furloughs come Oct 1. The same of course cannot be said for United, based on the latest displacement bid.
On the AF side, I think it's pretty clear blue won again with their legendary "run the clock offense". Folks are jamming up against each other on the way back into Uncle Sammy's whip. On the ARC side, full time jobs are pretty much doneski, all musical chairs are full already, RPA jobs included. Major/Legacy airline guys in the sub-1000 from their respective bottom would be wise imo to pull the trigger on MLOA earlier rather than later, cuz the manday pots and staff full-time IMAs are going like hotcakes right now.

Unfortunately, the loss of a “pool” at SWA was due to the EEOC. Apparently from what I was told, having a pool is illegal? Someone can probably answer that better, but that’s what I heard.

  4. T-6 syllabus should be done with cord mid-May. Lots of contention...lots.

T-1 and T-38 tracks (which there still are, as of now), are set to be figured out in the upcoming months.

The real intent is to set up students as “universally assignable” after T-6. Which is a bit funny when I watch a T-38 trained FAIP go B-2 while we could send a T-1 grad, but whatever...

UPT 2.5 at this point adds sorties to the T-6...for everyone (that’s a GREAT thing). The problem starts when it’s vision depends on “early access” (which is neutered by regulations) to decimate phase 3 training leading to winging students from T-6s. Training identified pilots within AFA/ROTC is mandatory.

The current “scuttle butt” for phase 3 is fine on the T-38 side...create a new syllabus that incorporates VR while combining the 38 and IFF syllabus. Fine for bases that have IFF anyways...

The situation on the T-1 side, while we seem insistent that the AF is incapable of buying another OTS T-1 is much worse. We give them 737 sims or some shit to train multi-engine stuff, AR, etc. Worse, we think we can do it in the T-6. We (19AF) just DON’T want to put money down here.

Myopic. It’s just not a term for in the cockpit looking for traffic. It’s bad right now. We’re going VERY fast, and the outcome is going to be WAY less than ideal.

In reality, the fact that these changes are taking root, is a victory for a large number of O-1’s straight through O-5’s that have worked outside their means for years! It has been hijacked and distorted by leadership over and over, but leadership moves on, but the insurgency has continued. It has taken root and is now close to becoming reality.

UPT 2.5 is not leadership trying to cut sorties. It is the work of people who know better trying to do what is needed. Thinking of Billy Mitchell is a better analogy. They are still trying to tank it...even at the SQ/CC level. People do not like change.

You will hear it’s about pilot production, It’s about making more pilots faster...that is not the point of these people. It’s about making BETTER PILOTS. If they can be made faster, great!

If there is anything legitimate to weigh in on, it’s what MDS’s could take a winged pilot out of UPT, and what MDS specific top off a MAF pilot needs in a T-6 or 737 sim to be ready for an FTU. ...or heaven forbid someone come up with an idea that’s better, because the MAF track conceptualized is a straight mess.

What are you doing to improve your Air Force? Complain as you like, provide constructive criticism for sure...but, I can promise you this stuff is not borne from the mind of a General (although those people should be Generals one day, but never will be.)

  5. Look, I'm all for liberty like the next guy.  However, where do we draw the line?  I have the right to survive and protect my family.  Should that right for my potentially-immunocompromised wife be infringed upon because some jackass wants to play disc golf with his buddies in the park down the way while coughing all over the place as he conducts a shelf check at Harris Teeter on the way there? This shit lives for days when it leaves your body; you may not even know you're touching a contaminated surface.
The concept of letting local officials create local policy works, except we live in an open border society and there's no vector control.  So without a uniformity on restrictions in order to limit the amount of movement of infected persons (who may not even know they're infected, it seems), hope of allowing this thing to die off wanes in the name of not letting the gubment take my rights. If I don't like the fact that Location X has strict disease containment measures, I can just hop in the family roadster and go down to Location Y where I can do whatever I want without regard to what harm I am causing to others. Every location has countless examples of people completely ignoring restrictions and infecting others (to include flippantly trying to spread the disease, in some extreme cases).
No one I know wants to cede their liberties.  But there are enough people out there who are literally killing others because they don't have the self control or sense of community to protect those they share a locality with by staying inside.

That sucks about having an immuno-compromised wife and forgive my ignorance but what’s stopping her from quarantining herself, while the rest of the world gets on with life?

  6. Did the instructors happen to stomp more during test reviews?

It was a complete joke and ops normal back when 100% of the guys were getting fighters there. Our FAIP was in class right after then and relayed this story to us:

Story goes: SELO says “everyone needs to pass this EPQ, I know Lt Johnson is at home sick so make sure you guys study with him. Academics shouldn’t effect your aircraft. Im very obviously putting the EPQ in my top drawer and I’ll be back after 2nd go...”

Students grab the EPQ take a picture of it and email it to John Johnson, a MSgt on the Tech Training side of the base thinking it’s their classmate at home. MSgt Johnson being the beacon of integrity for all to see, turns it in to his chain which goes up to the Base Commander (1-Star) who then goes up to his boss, 2-Star (19thAF I think) who then cracks down on Sheppard and exposes this travesty that SPs were “cheating” on weekly EPQs...

    Thread derail over.

  7.
That was true only for a short time.  When I went through, we were all on Title-32 training orders, thus we didn't get early retirement credit.  There was a short period of time where guys were title-10 or some time of early retirement eligible orders.  Some of those dudes had 2-3 years of pilots training plus their 2 years of seasoning counted...they killed it for sure!  From my understanding they "fixed the glitch," and those orders (MEST?) are no longer early retirement eligible.
You are correct though, it is 90 day increments.  You just have to get them in any 2 contiguous fiscal years.

I didn’t know it could be stringed across two FYs. Thanks for the intel.

  8. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/coronavirus-boeing-to-get-nearly-900-million-in-withheld-payments-from-air-force.html
A catch-22 I guess. Either pay the balance on a delivered deficient product, or risk Boeing going under and not getting any more KC-46 support/airplanes.  Although the second option doesn’t seem too terrible with all the issues the plane has right now.

    Should have gone with Airbus...

  9. Don’t be fooled.  The Bobs will put any of us on the street to save themselves.  Even SWA.

I don’t trust “the Bobs” at all (or the Gary’s and Tammys at SWA), but SWAPA and the majority of other guys at the company are in it as a team. It’s been pretty cool to see. The private talk on our SWA forums is a pretty all-for-one mentality.
  10. Sarcastic?
I too am a junior guy with SWA and give me this job with the uncertainty over AD any day.  I'd honestly rather go apply at Home Depot and sort hardware than plan an ORI or build a power point for the WG/CC.

No not sarcastic at all. I feel blessed that we seem best equipped to weather this storm. Still praying for all my other airline buddies. Several have told me that they feel like furloughs are coming for them. I have seen enough positive comments from our group at SWA that the culture isn’t dead.
