  1. ***Thread Revival***

Awesome read! A great story of a German born American who becomes a Naval Aviator. Dude gets shot down in Laos, is taken prisoner by the Pathet Lao and subsequently escapes (++++ style points on his escape)...a true warrior! This would be a gook book to add to the survival reading list.

Plus it has stories of the A-1, which IMHO, is worth the read!

  2. Hey Rainman... I know how you feel about talking to the media. Is it ok if we pose for the Chinese?

    51380769.jpg

It's NOT ok to pose like a homo!

If this guys squadron has a good LPA, this will be plastered all over with plenty of room for quotes!

  3. I never understood why this attitude was considered "cool." I understand it's not the biggest promotion in the world going from second lieutenant to first, but how hard is it to take just a little bit of interest in your own career and know your own date of rank? That way, you could drop the 50 cents at the BX a few days ahead of time, pick up some blue bars, and have them sewn on so you can show up wearing the right rank on the right day. Call me crazy, but that sounds like something an "officer" would do -- you know, having some SA and taking some personal responsibility for something related to their career.

    Edit: spelling

Tactical deception! What...oh ya, I knew my DOR was coming up, totally forgot! I'll go get that sewn on ASAP. That will work for about 2-3 lower level guys, but only 1 DO or CC, then it's time to fix it. Another good one is the, "oh crap I wore one of my old flightsuits with 2LT (or 1LT) rank!" It's a fine art, but done correctly, you can stretch that out for a few weeks or, if you're good, months! Key is to avoid leadership at all costs! Also stay away from anyone that has already heard your excuses...this keeps them from catching on to your ploy! The vault is generally the best place to avoid all who would actually give a damn....plus much of what you need, to be good at your job (flying/killing), is conveniently located there as well! Now this is important...if found out, bribes may work! I recommend Glenlivet 18 year or better, Johnnie Walker Green, Jameson 18 year, or the standard Jack! Goodluck!

I want all the pay of Capt with the responsibility of a LT Fighter Pilot. It was the best job I have ever had in the SQ! My job was to fly, know everything I could about flying my jet, fly some more and keep the bar stocked. Not get all bogged down with BS "additional duties," that really relegate flying to an additional duty and let your skills atrophy...why would you want to get promoted (minus the pay)! I about :vomit: the first time I had to say, I need off the schedule or said I couldn't fill that open line because I had to work to do! :banghead: Here I thought my job was to be a pilot.

Not knowing your date of rank for the 2Lt-1Lt changeover is absolutely idiotic. Seriously...it's generally very near the day you commissioned, except 2 years later, shouldn't be that goddamned hard to remember.

My wife's birthday and our anniversary, should be easy to remember too...but I seem to screw that up year to year!

vMPF is your friend if you're iceberg is too full for that particular penguin.

2! I make it a point to check it about once a month, mainly so I can unf%ck the inevitable errors! Takes all of about 2-3 minutes if everything is correct.

  4. Obama has proposed this for all almost non-military Executive branch employees already. Including DOD civilians. Much more saved right there than a similar freeze for the 535 members of Congress although symbolically they can go for it.

The freeze applies to all Executive Branch workers -- including civilian employees of the Defense Department, but does not apply to military personnel, government contractors, postal workers, members of Congress, Congressional staffers, or federal court judges and workers.

If we are in such dire straights and drastic measures are needed, then NO ONE should be immune to the cuts! We are all in this together...including Congress. Yes, I think it's symbolically important that they take the cuts as well. How can they have nerve to look all other Federal workers in the eye and say, you need to take a pay cut...but not me!

  5. The $400 billion cut is over 10 years, so by 2023 since the budget request for 2012 is already submitted and includes the original $400 billion Gates has already identified.

    Story.

Most of the time pay "cuts" are really either freezes or measures that slow their growth (like smaller cost of living increases, etc.). Honestly, if we're serious about cutting deficits all of a sudden, why is this not on the table? Everything should be on the table so the American people can really see what the options are, no sacred cows on either side if we're being serious. The voters will see that the sentiments to "make cuts" are not nearly as easily met when the things that are eating the vast majority of our budget are quite popular (i.e. not foreign aid, the department of education, etc.).

WRT DoD, it's either make cuts to personnel costs (either less troops or same number and pay them less) or cut R&D, procurement, or operations. A lot of reductions are projected from drawing down operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and obviously some major procurement items have been cut recently as well.

I don't want a reduction in pay or benefits for active military members but if cuts are gonna come you realistically have to expect that they will hit that aspect of defense spending. Some of the proposals have even been very reasonable (Tricare fees) but have met a firewall of categorical opposition that defies logic.

Attached good report on DOD personnel costs with a sh*t-load of graphics and numbers on the issue.

As stoleit2x said...I'll buy the pay freeze, IF all members of our government lead by example and freeze their pay as well!

  6. I love flying light twins, but would never want to own one. Not when you can buy a plane like a Cherokee 6 and fly the same or greater payload, while giving up relatively little airspeed, for a fraction of the cost. When you factor MX on that second engine, and a turbo if you add that...your price skyrockets. Also, check on the price of insurance, that alone may be a game changer! Now, I will caveat that with the fact that twin prices are relatively low right now. So if you are set on buying one it's a decent time to do so.

  7. Sure it does. 5-6 sustained G's plus bad ergonomics, plus keeping a tally on a small jet, plus challenging energy considerations. No, it's not a modern marvel. But when someone trys to re-invent the wheel 50+ years down the road, and G level is their only consideration....sorry, the T-38 is still a darn good IFF trainer.

Don't forget dealing with CRAZY instructors! Those who have flown with him, I'm sure, will never forget it! Great dude!

    NSFW, I guess...

  8. Take roll, charge the no shows

Make fun of the weakest link in the squadron

    Squadron history by the LPA

    Naked picture of hot woman

    Instant Justice

Stories on the bros (story time), winner of best story through an audio-omiter gets squadron crappy flying call sign

Entertainment provided by LPA, if a naming then by the namee's

Lots of shots for any ridiculous reason

Close it, sometimes with a song, sometimes with deceased insect

This is only one of many versions.

This and add in the Squadron toast, if you have one.

  9. That was the best video I have seen in a long time.

Haha, we used to have to suffer through that video every year, back in my enlisted days, when we knocked out all our annual requirement! I figured it would go well with all the people nerding out about the obogs/LOX/Nitrous.

  10. Speaking of WTF...WTF happened to the posts of Lt I have to much time on my hands, so I became a NFL cheerleader. I'm pretty sure it was on this thread!

  11. But see, today's junior NCO force wants to be their airman's buddy, not their superior. They cower behind a closed dorm room door while airman puke, break shit, fight and disturb folks in crew rest and then complain the next day about "today's airmen." I truly believe drinking and having fun are part of the process of airmen maturing and that's where the junior NCO force comes in; to allow them to have fun but to step in when it gets out of line and protect your airmen from themselves.

Then said Airman cries (no shit, actually cries), goes to the shirt and complains that so and so, was mean to them. First shirt goes to his commander, who talks to your commander, your commander forces you to apologize to the airman. Not shit, a Major forced to apologize to a SrA, for giving the airman a counseling session (in private). It started out as a "talking to," to the airman about not doing their job, when the airman got respectful, it was time to talk in private! Our Marine exchange officer about shit his pants when he saw this!

    Saw it happen... :banghead:

  12. You know many A1C homeowners? If so, the kind of house an O-4+ would be looking at?

Are we talking an active A1C, or a guard A1C? Had an buddy (A1C) making just under 100k and numerous SrA - SSgt friends making well over 100k, in their civilian jobs!
