  1. But see, today's junior NCO force wants to be their airman's buddy, not their superior. They cower behind a closed dorm room door while airman puke, break shit, fight and disturb folks in crew rest and then complain the next day about "today's airmen." I truly believe drinking and having fun are part of the process of airmen maturing and that's where the junior NCO force comes in; to allow them to have fun but to step in when it gets out of line and protect your airmen from themselves.

Then said Airman cries (no shit, actually cries), goes to the shirt and complains that so and so, was mean to them. First shirt goes to his commander, who talks to your commander, your commander forces you to apologize to the airman. Not shit, a Major forced to apologize to a SrA, for giving the airman a counseling session (in private). It started out as a "talking to," to the airman about not doing their job, when the airman got respectful, it was time to talk in private! Our Marine exchange officer about shit his pants when he saw this!

    Saw it happen... :banghead:

  2. You know many A1C homeowners? If so, the kind of house an O-4+ would be looking at?

Are we talking an active A1C, or a guard A1C? Had an buddy (A1C) making just under 100k and numerous SrA - SSgt friends making well over 100k, in their civilian jobs!

  3. I've already burned my MGIB-30 in the 1990's and am now totaling up what I can receive under Post 9/11

The Post 9/11 GI bill current eligibility standards

    Qualifying active duty includes:

    – Full-time duty in the Armed Forces, other than

    active duty for training

    – A call or order to active duty under section 688,

    12301(a), 12301(d), 12301(g), 12302, or 12304 of

    Title 10

    • Active duty periods may begin at any time,

however, only portion served after 09/10/01

can be used to establish eligibility

Based on the above, does this mean I can tally up all my Man days (MPA), Active Duty for Special Work, deployments, etc. and use these for benefits? All AT (annual tour), Active Duty for Training, and SCH (school) tour days cannot be used. If so, what documents do I need to submit to the VA to show the breakdown. Any one done this yet? Thanks for any input.

This has been a big question lately. I would go into the base retention people or whoever run the GI Bill at your base. They should have nailed down, what you can and can't use. I haven't looked into it in a while, but I'm pretty sure they are getting it changed so you can count your title 32 time as well. From what I understand, you can only use a total of 48 months worth of GI-Bill from any of the various benefits (AD, Reserve, Post 9-11). I used the Reserve GI-Bill for college, so I only have 9 months left on mine...but it's still a years worth for the kiddo!

  4. Sounds like a giant booze-fueled sex romp...

I wasn't around during the Air Force of the 70s and 80s, but I imagine this environment was very similar to what took place back then. There has been a lot of this going around lately it seems like...I don't know if it is happening more or big blue is cracking down more, I am guessing it is the latter.

Wow, I'm surprised it took this long for this story to end up here.

I love the description of his profile pic in the second link. FAIL!

Brig. Gen. Tom Botchie and members of the 121st Air Refueling Wing, Columbus, Ohio, show their Buckeye pride at an Ohio State designed road block in Al Uehdid, Qatar
  5. 1) Arrested development, 2) Females with an inflated sense of how attractive they are.

    Valid!

You're channeling Tom Ricks circa April 2009.

Never heard of him before today.

I'm pretty sure we had a thread on this once too...

Ya, must have missed that one...

If you didn't go to the zoo, then you won't get it.

    Copy...

I fail to see how an academy grad separating at 5 years is any different than a ROTC dude punching at the same time.

Because it costs about two to three times as much to send a kid through the academy. Not to mention the yearly operating costs of running the academy. We already have ROTC dets all over the country...seems like it would be cheaper. I don't know, maybe the dynamic of having guys from all three commissioning sources is good a good thing. But as nsplayr pointed out, this apparently has been discussed before, maybe this should be moved to that thread.

  6. Also, if we're talking saving money, how much money would we save if we shut down the academies? Increase the number of ROTC/OTS students per year to make up the numbers. This would be what, one maybe two students per ROTC det? Paying a full ride scholarship at most colleges would be way cheaper than running the Academy! What do we really gain from the academies...especially with the students that punch at the end of their commitment?

  7. Moving away from recounts for a moment, can anyone recommend some books that improve Dead Reckoning Skills and/or aviation related mental maths? Much appreciated.

*Note - I have never read this book and can't vouch for how good it is.

  8. Hey Guys,

This would be the thread to ask the following questions, I appreciate your help, I've been trying to figure out if I am able to recieve BAH for my home while at UPT. Here are the following questions:

    1. Is there a way to recieve BAH for my HOR at my guard unit?

    2. Do they view going to UPT as a PCS(a change of PDS?) or a TDY?

    3. I heard something about a BAH Exception Form from a guy at another guard unit. This form was for the purpose of recieving an exception to the BAH at UPT and recieve it for my HOR instead. Does this exist?

    4. Where/what is the regulation that would allow this? I have been reading through all the regs here (http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/perdiem/trvlregs.html) but I don't understand all the finance regs well (only FARs and AFIs, lol).

    Thanks for your help!

    -Hardie9e

I don't have the reg to back it, but I know a UPT classmate of mine (guard guy), that lived in the dorms and received BAH for his house back home (the wifey lived there). Goodluck!

    UPT is a PCS.

  9. Champ Kind is absolutely right on this one. Be professional, but stand up for what you know is right. Having to do out-processing on your day off is not right to begin with. Not being allowed to attend because you were "only 5 minutes EARLY" doesn't make any sense. Throw the BS flag.

Whoever said, "if you're not 5 minutes early, you're late," is a fu%king moron!

  10. Man I was born in the wrong era...

Oh by the way, if you have ever visited the Auger Inn...you can thank my grandfather for that...He opened that Bar back when he was the Group Commander and President of the Randolph Officers club back in the late 60's.

    Boomer Sooner!

    Small planes win wars!

More importantly...I was born in the wrong era. I've heard great things about that bar!

  11. dude...I would give anything to fly an A-1.

    Same here.

That said,....that gun ain't gettin' through armor.

Valid! Ya, I fully agree with your challenge. I just thought this was a great time to insert a plane as bada$$ as the Skyraider!

It scares me that people (ie...leadership/politicians) think the 35 is going to take over the mission of the A-10! That thing won't take anywhere near the BD that the Hog can...

  12. I agree with you 100%. However, that doesn't excuse the well-intentioned, law-abiding, gun-carrying citizen from the repercussions of errant bullets shot from their weapon. Criminals will commit crime; they will have guns regardless of the laws. However, it would be a real shame to watch a law-abiding citizen become a criminal in the squeeze of a trigger. IMO, if you want to legally open/concealed carry, then you must 1) realize you are 100% responsible for who you kill, correct target or not, 2) subject to all laws regardless of intentions, and 3) be required to receive annual training and pass annual evaluations.

I agree with this 100%. If you do decide to carry, you had better be prepared to pay the consequences if you f&ck up. But I'm more worried about being sent to jail, by the tape "graders" in the AOR!

The way it is now is akin, IMO, to taking a B-courser to the range, dropping a few BDUs, firing the gun, then turning them loose in the Stan, alone and unafraid-not a good idea.

Ahhh BDUs and bullets....can't wait until we actually get to shoot/drop those again. I have done neither since the B-Course. But I digress...

Edit: back on topic, anyone wanna comment on a Rem 870 in terms of fun-to-shoot factor? I eventually want one for home defense reasons but I enjoy shooting at the range too. Only used a shotgun a few times but I know some out there probably own and shoot 870s and the ability to go out and have fun throwing slugs or popping watermelons is a factor I'm curious about WRT a shotgun purchase.

The Remington 870 is a classic, like the red rider BB gun. I have one, as should all red blooded all American bada$$es! It is a great gun, very dependable, comfortable, cheap and built well enough that you don't have to worry it hurting it. A buddy of mine piked one of these up for home defense, it was a blast to shoot. Not to mention that bad johnny attached to the barrel, that's enough to mess up your day.

  13. Would a crowd full of gun carrying citizens have stopped Loughner from walking up to Giffords and firing at point-blank range? Doubt it. Common sense and/or mortality doesn't stop crazy people, either.

So let's say a gun-carrying citizen shot at Loughner, missed, and killed innocent person? What's the fall-out from that? While I'm 100% in favor of open and concealed carry, I don't understand how anyone can advocate untrained Dirty Harry wannabes walking the streets, praying to become a folk hero. Police officers, FFDOs, fighter pilots, etc... all require mandated use-of-force training. But Billy Jack and his MP-4 don't?!? Personally, I don't want to be at a Dunkin Donuts with my family when it gets robbed and Billy Jack steps in to "save the day"... Then accidentally kills half of the donut-makers, and possibly my family.

There was a guy carrying, he chose not to pull his weapon, probably the right choice. A fine example of exercising good judgement in a tense situation. But if he would have had a clear field of fire, he may have saved a few lives, and we would have one less POS in this world.

There are a lot of people walking the streets who think they are much bigger bad-asses than they really are. Some of them have guns, and I'm not comfortable with that.

You just described every gang-banger/Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold/etc... They can try to restrict it guns all they want, guns will still find their way into the wrong hands. Now I have no ability to defend myself when confronted with a possible situation. I am not comfortable with that...

So cliche, but so true..."when seconds count, the police are minutes away!"

  14. Although he is strongly opposed to most gun control measures, Levy said in this case “as a policy matter” restricting access to high-capacity magazines such as the 33-round one used by Loughner makes sense.

Say they do restrict the magazine limit to 15. You really want to have 30 bullets to spray at a crowd. Get another gun with a 15 round mag...problem solved, law useless!

  15. Defense.gov release

Department of Defense Releases 2011 BAH Rates

The Department of Defense released today the 2011 Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates, which take effect Jan. 1, 2011. While overall rates will decrease an average of 0.59 percent, because of the individual rate protection provision, the average change service members will see is a 1.1 percent increase.

Individual rate protection ensures that individual members already assigned to a given location will not see their BAH rate decrease, though they will receive the increase if the rate goes up. This assures that members who have made long-term commitments in the form of a lease or contract are not penalized if the area’s housing costs decrease. Any decreases only apply to members newly reporting to a location.

A typical junior enlisted member with dependents will find his/her BAH about $39 per month higher than last year, while a senior non-commissioned officer with dependents will receive about the same amount as last year.

Three components are included in the BAH computation: median current market rent; average utilities (including electricity, heat, and water/sewer) and average renter’s insurance.

Total housing costs are calculated for six housing profiles (based on dwelling type and number of bedrooms) in each military housing area. BAH rates are then calculated for each pay grade, both with and without dependents. An estimated $19 billion will be paid to over 1 million service members in 2011.

For more information on BAH, visit https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bah.cfm.

Disregard....should have read the next paragragh before posting! :banghead:

  16. To me, you could put more emphasis on personal contributions, tailor retirement benefits to those who have "earned" them most, i.e. days deployed, particularly dangerous or hazardous career fields, etc. The civilian retirement system has changed a great deal in the past 20-30 years and the military is easily the best game in town WRT getting a good pension these days.

Hah....good luck with that! Don't you know that EVERYONE is a Warrior! :banghead:

  17. No I got my UAV while I was in c-17 IP upgrade. And no im not a bottom feeder. I was first to upgrade to AC & IP out of my peer group. I just had a CC who didn't really "know" me b/c I was sent to the wing right before his change of command followed by FSO and then a ground deployment away from my squadron right after. I've just been a flying whore my first 3 years on station and never said no to the schedulers. Well guess who's the boss going to send to a uav? Not the execs, dudes who plan dining-outs/golf tournaments and booster club prez. He's going to send the guy who's not strat'd b/c he's been TDY the last 3 years. Funny thing is I volunteered for an ops assignment 6 months prior then later to go to altus. However at that time AFPC would not let me go OPS yet because I didn't have enough time on station and then later altus all of the sudden became a good deal and was hard to get... ridiculous

Well I think I got my point across. I'm bitter. But life's not fair.. it is what it is. The air force doesn't owe me anything and I don't owe the airforce anything after my ADSC.

    until then embrace the suck!

WOW...Copy, break out the kneepads to get the good assignment!

Sounds like a bro that wanted Helos so bad he could taste it. He was a great bro, helped everyone, was an all around great dude. He busts his a$$ and finishes #1 in T-6's, only to be forced into 38's. WTF, I guess hard work DOESN'T always pay off. Of course he's the dude that dusts himself off and kicks a$$ in 38's, but still kinda a crappy deal when the helo spot goes to a guy that finished well below him...
