Well, I thought Russia would easily overrun Ukraine…so who knows what to think anymore lol

Same, things are coming out of left field these days

I don’t know, the US is busy but has forces that could respond to aggression if it happened and we decided that directly involving ourselves was in our interest

IDK if any SA country would respond to aid in repelling a Venezuelan invasion and I think the administration would be reticent given the upcoming election for POTUS

If the Venezuelans did attack and we did respond to aid Guyana, I could see an air campaign to destroy major conventional capabilities to give them a more even playing field

  2. Let’s just go with this video is full of bad Wikipedia level research and these guys are making click bait not informed information.

Fair enough, it was the question to get a discussion going after seeing Russian helicopters have some losses and what could be gleaned from that

    That doesn’t help him.

The number of Army pilots (particularly conventional) that have experience and understanding of denied area ops is abysmal after 2 decades of coin.

Helicopters aren’t limited because of the nature of their engineering, they’ll be limited because of the lack of fused planning or understanding and synchronization of enablers evident by the war fighter we just did. The people who don’t know what they are doing and never received training in how to do it are now leaders and they are as a population resistant to being told anything by anyone outside their experience model.

Yeah but you can say that about every platform in a contested environment.

Here's another attempt to post the link without trying to spam BO . net

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqkI51xEDio

The critique is now I think due to the proliferation of really good small GBAD systems (not just MANPADs) but the adaptation of new / novel technologies like FPV drone attacks on lower, slower moving platforms

This attack was unsuccessful but you can see where this is gonna go

  4. Ward Carrol is a 2 decade out of date Tomcat RIO who has as much understanding of helicopter aviation as would be expected by a Naval strike pilot who only ever saw them operate over blue water. I don’t hate the guy, but he’s waaaaay outside his wheelhouse.

If somebody doesn’t think Attack Rotary wing can function in LSCO and their examples are the Russian Hostemel “Leroy Jenkins” or the famous attack to destroy yourself by 11th Regiment in 03, they are cherry picking. Kurt Waldron and the Israeli Apache community would have a very different opinion on the survivability of helicopter aviation in a LSCO/RF arena.

Most of the Russian helicopters lost have been from…. Indirect fire. Surprise, helicopters are vulnerable when they are sitting on the ground same as fixed wing.

Carroll’s video is not about attack helicopters but a discussion on the current state of the Ukrainian air war

    Task and Purpose video is

  5. Mods delete.

Something is corrupted off those YouTube links

Apologies for the crappy links but go to the YouTube and it’s Ward Carrol’s latest interview with Justin Bronk and the second video was from Task and Purpose asking provocatively if the Attack Helicopter dead based on Russia losing 80+ so far, kinda click bait as it started to turn into an Apache propaganda video towards the end (no shade thrown at the venerable Apache with that) but still recommend for the points made pro / con

McDonald Douglas built my jet to be EMP/JAM proof on accident lol.   I was bored on my flight the other day because I had more than 50 minutes at cruise (the worst!), so I checked out the airways based on VORs.   Maybe it was because I was on the east coast, but I was surprised at how many VORs are still online.  I know they're closing more but I think I could easily go back to flying airways with an RMI.   We already fly approaches where we just get cleared a common navaid and told cleared for approach (whatever approach we want) in places like AVL.  Might be fun for a bit, but that would get annoying.  I like my airline flying like I like my women....easy!

    Same...

Yep, my guess is that more than the currently planned number of VORs will be left on if the do-it-yourself EM jamming becomes more common...

That's where I see much of the disagreement. You aren't replacing or backfilling a capability if the replacement isn't purchased in sufficient numbers to adequately accomplish the task. Getting rid of 500 Gen 4 fighters to buy 100 Gen 5 fighters (made up numbers) is not modernizing, evolving, or replacing. It's dumping one ability (supported by numbers) for another (supported by tech).

This also seems to be why these divestiture plans always collapse. The Air Force comes up with some sort of bullshit math where we get rid of an old fleet worth a certain dollar amount, and apply those dollars to the new weapon system at a much lower quantity, because obviously new stuff is more expensive. But then in some congressional hearing where a congressman is fighting to keep a base or a weapon system in their district, the general is forced to admit that the new weapon system, in the quantity planned, will not adequately replace the capabilities of the old weapon system at much higher quantities. Then surprise surprise, we don't get rid of the old weapon system, which means we have even less money going forward for the new one.

It's a vicious cycle of stupidity and disingenuous arguments, and it's so short-sighted that the obvious result in the long run is an overall weaker military.

They don't think that it matters, we're victims in a way of our own success.  Gulf War 1, the Balkans, GWOT, Libya, Syria, etc... they see examples of our current family of systems coming home with wins and just think that no matter what it will all work out in the end so don't worry about it, keep the jobs, base, logistics and the 70 year old iron flying, we'll always win and buy a few of the now 6.9 billion a tail new platform...

  8. I was thinking the exact same thing for AFSOC.

Yup, one could argue this is what the USMC is supposed to do (small wars as historically these things were called) but as they are pivoting to a different force structure and as most operations are joint this is where the USAF could take the lead and build a light AF to integrate with the other components light forces
As the unnamed official in the quote expressed, we can’t afford to fly exquisite iron on routine missions
It’s the requirements using history and a sober assessment of likely missions as a guide to build out this collection of platforms & systems
X amount of pallets per day between FOBs, X amount of CAPs when supporting a stabilization force of X size, etc… these missions would overlap with other NG and ANG missions

  9. This type of thing absolutely needs to happen so we don’t fly the wings off of the F-35’s, B-21’s, and NGAD’s when we get involved in Afghanistan 2.0 in ten years. Won’t happen, but should.

Concur but one can still argue on BO for it and other lost causes…

Light capabilities in general are needed for MOOTW (dating myself with that term but it captures a lot of what we do now and likely in the future)

Light air mobility, light fighter, low footprint high endurance RPA, ACE light logistics, etc… just my retired guard bubba cents but this could doctrinally fit into the Guard or AFSOC (sts) with the right leadership seeing that we will be deterring and occasionally fighting in places other than the SCS against the forces of chaos with capes that require not a sledgehammer but a small hammer

From The WZ article:  "What is clear is that we can't afford to police the Super Bowl with an F-22," the same individual told Jennings in Madrid.

Price and allies needing cheaper iron that will integrate well with all their other systems... this should be driving this idea higher on the AF to do list.

You can’t say you support and want to spend money defending a democracy in Ukraine when they’re attacked, but then say the opposite about Israel.

currently in college and in the enlistment process as of right now for my home unit (hopefully through sometime early next year).
ive flown in the Cessna a couple times, although, it hasn't counted towards my flight hours. it was to test the waters and to see if my interest was beyond just talk. (hoping to get my PPL in one of the upcoming summers; really whenever I have the time to focus on it).

Good, sounds like you’re going the right direction
As to BA or BS, to the Guard / AF I’m not sure it would matter or how much in whatever candidate selection method they are using now
I never sat on a SUPT candidate selection board but I did on several promotion and interview boards
If we knew the candidate was not an immature knucklehead by his / her service in the Wing, that paid the biggest dividends IMHO, good grades, flying time, etc all matter too but your performance in the Wing is where you’ll make your mark
I’m telling you something you already know but FWIW
If you think you can score a higher gpa with a BA vs BS, and you want that degree then proceed that route
Except for test pilot / astronaut, the tech degree doesn’t matter

  13. what's up guys, sorry for the surplus amount of questions.
to keep it short, i'm trying to decide if I should pursue a BS in psychology or a BA in psychology. I am planning on applying for the guard and I know GPA weighs heavier than major, but there are a few factors that are in play.  I am confident if I pursued a BA that I could graduate with a decently higher GPA than a BS as a result of less math, physics and science classes. However, a BS instead of a BA would challenge me more, improving studying skills and work ethic.
ultimately my question is, would it be worth it in the long run if I pursued a BS, improving my studying skills and possibly preparing myself for UPT, but lowering my GPA, or should I stick with BA?
I understand that it's up to me to test my capabilities, but I would love some information from your guys' own experience. what did you major in and do you think it helped you?
I would appreciate any input. thank you guys!

    Questions:
    Are you already in college?
Have you started talking to Guard units?
Would you be willing to enlist first in a Guard unit or join only if they offered a commission and SUPT slot?
    Have you started flying?
If you can’t fly for the Guard what’s plan B, C, etc…? Assuming you are in the Guard at that time

    Decent discussion
I think it (however you define the problem) is as Thomas Sowell said there are no solutions only trade offs
If we institute a WO or flying only career track does that start to turn the AF into a subordinate service maybe not in name but reality, if we compare officers only to officers from the same career fields does that inevitably block some career fields from Col / GO slots, if we allow for promotion deferment do we set ourselves up for an unbalanced officer cadre?
My two cents, experimenting with the above and other policy changes is probably worth the risk at this point

  15. I’m not a ROTC grad or Academy guy, but I’ve never heard of prior E’s that go to those institutions getting to count that toward retirement. Am I wrong?

Nope, while I was in ROTC the prior E’s were not active enlisted members on an enlistment contract so no soup for them or no prior service cadets

That’s from 24 years ago so buyer beware but I’d be surprised that policy would have changed
