  1. Doesn't seem legit; why was this not news? Why does this unnamed "white house insider" contradict every other person who's spoken about the process?

    Gates:

Why did you even bring this up here again?

To the SEAL who put two in bin Laden :salut:

I was thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure if this was posted and anyone knew who this Pat Dollard guy was .

  2. Disagree...I was wheels on the ground for less than three hours when my Flight Engineer was robbed at gunpoint. My next visit they smashed the window of my rental car in an attempt to steal who knows what.

    Let me guess....a candy bar?

  3. Did he go off the left edge of the runway to avoid hitting his lead?. What are the options an F-16 pilot has when leaving the runway? Is it normal to eject or stick with it?

It looked like lead exited at A-1 (45 deg right angle at end of R-36) and the MA departed the runway straight ahead.

I didn't see the accident (too busy looking at all the planes), but the Vipers were putting on a good show prior to the landing incident. Lead was more aggressive with AB and an aggressive 90 degree closed pull each time while wing didn't go AB and probably only rolled about 70 degrees. Glad the pilot made it out ok

  4. I'm going--it'll be my second trip, I went two years ago. Socata's 100th Anniversary (I have a TB-20), first time any aircraft manufacturer has made that mark in continuous production, so there are supposed to be some good demos, passes to VIP areas (read: free food/booze), and a good showing of folks I know from the user group.

I'm flying up Tue, staying through Sun. I may make a day-trip on Mon (I'll be in Chicago this w/e) if the friends I'm visiting are interested.

    Are you flying in?

No firm plans on getting up there but may fly a 172 up if nothing comes together with sharing a ride. I'm looking at leaving as early as this weekend, but need to head back to Wichita Saturday to get ready for my desert vacation on Monday.

  5. Get it done before UPT if you can. I've never regretted getting my MBA on casual and am glad my Dad pushed for me to get back in school so I could stay on his health insurance. Although, I wasn't a fan of having to write a paper on my last night in Vegas, while TDY, but life only gets busier so it was nice to front load the work and finish the month before UPT started. I wouldn't sweat the "real degree" pursuit. There are plenty of opportunities for that later on but the initial masters opens up those doors later on if that's what you want. GL

  6. This is ridiculous. If the intent is to merge ASBC and SOS, then wait at least 4 years until todays butterbars are at the very least, at the beginning of their eligibility for SOS in res so troops don't have to re-learn info, causing inefficiencies. The worst part is, the AU guys are hailed as budgetary gods because they are saving 12 Million a year....what about the $69M you cost the taxpayers over the last 5-6 years since you started ASBC? Self licking ice cream cone.

  7. So let me get this straight…..ASBC twice, SOS twice, Masters twice. I like the message the Air Force continues to send to our mid-level Captains about leadership: You always get two chances to get it right.

    - “Wait a second, did you really get everything out of ASBC that you were supposed to? No? Here, enjoy an extra 3 weeks at Shoe Flag while we cover the material again.“

    - “Are you sure SOS in correspondence was useful in developing your leadership skills? No? Well here, we'll send you to Maxwell to try your hand at flickerball just in case.”

    - “Did your graduate degree adequately develop your reading/writing ability, interpersonal skills and professional competence? No? Here, take a year and go to school again.”

Can you imagine if flying operations were run like this happy horseshit??? ...You go to UPT twice, IFF twice, do your FLUG and IPUG upgrades twice, and in every EP sim they make you do all the Boldface twice just to make sure you really know it. No. This isn't the fucking special olympics. You either sink or swim on the first try. (And if the first attempt [i.e. correspondence or online degrees] doesn’t fully meet the intent, then stop wasting our time and fix it until it does or come up with an alternative.)

This is negative training of the worst sort, and on a large scale. The Air Force is squandering the opportunity in each of these courses to teach one of the most fundamental aspects of military leadership: How to prepare and how to bring your A-game; how to get it right the first time. Leaders, especially in combat, don’t get to take a mulligan, call “Do over!” or get handed second chances to learn how to lead.

    Shak....Shack!

  8. If you are single, you have to live downtown. Period.

Married....many choices. Mt. Pleasant, Summerville, Daniel Island, etc...depends on your budget.

Places to avoid....anything remotely close to Rivers Ave.

Agreed on avoiding Rivers and North Charleston in general. Don't rule out Goose Creek either for family oriented living. Crowfield plantation has some really nice homes and is close to I-26 for the commute to base, but the traffic can get pretty bad in the mornings on I-26 W towards CHS.

  9. What you want is to "transfer custodianship" of your IRA--taxes don't come into play (nothing gets sold & your account transfers intact). Vanguard (and any other company offering IRAs) will have the forms.

Depending on your agreement w/ T. Rowe Price, they may charge you a fee ($75-ish seems to be the vogue) to execute; I recommend you pay that from funds outside the IRA (as you should any fees related to an IRA), otherwise you're effectively withdrawing money from the IRA that you can't put back in.

Rog, sounds like Roth IRA will be a tax free transfer but I'll absorb tax consequences of selling my other existing mutuals right? I guess another option is to roll the Roth IRA to VG and just keep the mutuals at TRowe Price while opening up new ones at Vanguard and slowly building them over time. Thanks for the tips.

  10. Does anyone have any experience with changing mutual fund companies? I've been with T Rowe Price for the last 5 years and am very happy, however the expense ratios at Vanguard are way less and I've heard nothing but good things from people who use them, so am considering the move. I currently have my Roth IRA and mutuals all with T Rowe Price and would like to make the jump, but don't want to get screwed on taxes. Thanks.

  11. Apparently, you've never flown an Aircam.

It is the closest you will come to flying on a "magic carpet". And you never worry about losing an engine,... even in a deep canyon.

False economy, maybe. False insurance,... no way.

Huggy, that plane looks like a blast. Looking at buying one? Are there any on the used market yet?

  12. I think it's always a good idea to keep your career options open. What happens when you get RIF'd and got nothing but a multi-engine commercial and 2,000 single engine hours to show for your AF career?

That being said we have good news that at least when FedEx recently opened their window we asked them the question and were assured that PC-12/U-28 time was good via FedEx.

Requirements straight from their website: https://fedex.pilotcredentials.com/index.php?a=qualifications

Are they saying single engine turbo prop will count for the 1000 multi (or jet) pic requirement or just the 1500 total time? Regardless, the tie breaker would obviously go to the guy with multi mil time. Guess it will just depend how many people Fedex hires.

1500 hours total fixed-wing time as pilot-in-command (PIC) or second-in-command in multi-engine turbo-prop A/C or jet A/C or combination thereof, including a minimum of 1000 hours total fixed-wing pilot-in-command in multi-engine turbo prop A/C or jet A/C or combination thereof. Note: PIC for this purpose is defined as Captain/Aircraft Commander of record, not simply the sole manipulator of the controls. Note: FedEx considers only pilot time in fixed wing aircraft toward minimum qualifications. This does not include simulator, helicopter, flight engineer, bombardier, navigator, RIO, EWO, WSO, NFO, or Special Crew.
