You will not get a waiver for the seat with previous back surgery. The seat going up the rails can paralyze you. I didn’t think of that. My friend’s waiver says “non-ejection seat” or something like that.

I’m not sure if it is different for an active flyer...but I know a guy who had a microdiscectomy in L5-S1 and he got a waiver to RTFS. It was a pain in the ass for him because the command wanted a bunch of extra stuff showing he could still push the rudder pedals and move the yoke. I will never blow sunshine. Flying is too important. Yes, the initial PTN guys were screened. My understanding from friends who set up the PTN concept was to establish a baseline from people who already had flying experience so they could actually measure Joe Newhire’s performance against something objective. I wasn’t involved with any of the pipeline part. I don’t want to toss out this person’s previous experience but I’m sure it is a factor. I think it is worth looking at ways to “optimize” UPT and FTU training. I don’t think it is worth cutting just to produce faster/more.

I’ve flown with one of the PTN graduates. Statistics of small numbers...but a better product than regular UPT is churning out right now.
