So I took the plunge and installed Windows 7 yesterday. Has anyone found out how to get the CAC reader software to work with Windows 7 64 bit?

I have Win7 but not the CAC reader. Usually install problems I have can all be resolved by installing the software under a different compatibility option. Right-click install as...Vista or XP. Here is a link pertaining to your issue that someone else solved with this technique.

I'll have to try that. I knew that Win 7 supposedly had some kind of compatability mode but I didn't know you could apply it to specific programs. I ended up getting it to work by having to manually install some of the certificates. The link on portal to download the reader software has a PDF attached to it now with instructions for installing on 64 bit operating systems.

So far, I'm impressed with Win 7. I've had a couple minor issues, but it seems pretty stable for an operating system that's only been released for a week.

It's pretty much the money. I've been running the release candidate version since early this summer and have only had issues with SQL Server 2005. Just upgraded my work PC last night and everything has been smooth. Also, just FYI, anything 64 bit is going to be a pain in the ass. It's just not widespread enough.

I've been running 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate with no problems. As far as I can remember, I didn't have any trouble installing the CAC reader.

I probably would have gone with the 32 bit version except I've read that a 32 bit OS will only recognize a maximum of 3GB of RAM.

Yes you can use a CAC with windows 7. Most of the AF cac readers that are USB need a firmware update to work with Vista/Win7. Also, there are a couple of tricks needed to install it. You will need to use the compatibility mode as well as install the C++ redistributable program included in the Home Use zip file. If you need help, PM me. If enough people need help, ill post full details online. (Im the computer guy for our unit).

BTW, windows 7 is money! Much faster than vista without the crashes. If you buy the upgrade, do a clean install instead under the custom settings when you boot from the disk. Most of the guys I know have problems with the vista to win7 direct upgrade.

I've been running the RC since it was released and I really like it.

My only bitch is that I have to reinstall Vista to install the commercial version of Win 7.

Also, if you are currently enrolled in school MS has a website, Dreamspark I think, where you can get full retail versions of some of there networking software...Server 2008 etc..

Ours did. I don't really use it to do work when I'm TDY, but it's nice to be able to log in once every couple days to delete emails so i don't have to spend an hour of my workday after a 10 day trip to sort through my e-mail trying to find what's important. It's also nice not to ever have to remember my AFportal password anymore.

And we just got Vista in our Squadron... two weeks ago.

My buddy is bringing Win7 back from Seattle this weekend and I wanna upgrade from this Vista crap. I've got a bunch of music, videos, and documents on my computer. Will I need to back it all up on my external HD? Or will it all just pass over to the Win7?

Always back up your stuff. You never know when you computer is going to tank and you loose it. I would back up your stuff and do a fresh install rather than just upgrading. This was you delete the viruses from your computer from downloading all the porn.

I'm going through AMU and I don't think we have student e-mail so I registered on the MS website without e-mail and uploaded a school registration form so hopefully that works. It says it may be 1-2 weeks for verification. I bought 2 new computers, one is a netbook which only has Windows 7 starter so would like to get that upgraded. Other than that Windowns 7 has been pretty sweet so far. I downloaded the Office 2007 Home Use Program for $10 but it will only let me install on 1 computer. Any way to get another copy through HUP?

Anyone got a link to download the software itself? My SQ just issued me a reader, but it was JUST the reader, no install CD or any sort of reference on where to get the software to make it go.

Try https://www.militarycac.com. The site leads you through all the steps in the order they need to be done. If you've got an SCR card reader, you'll have to do the firmware update to get it to work w/ Windows 7. There's also a link somewhere on there to get the correct ActiveClient 6 that works with Windows 7 64-bit w/out having to pay for it.
