  1. I too would like to know, at least generally speaking, what the family concerns were/are.

    The issue I would have - and past experience backs this up - is that if you can't stay focused for 6-9 weeks of OTS, how can you be expected to stay focused for 54 weeks of UPT plus FTU and survival school?

    Hopefully whatever issues came up have been dealt with and put to bed for good. IMHO you will need to convince any ANG board of that.

    Do some of that pilot shit...don't take "no" for an answer and make it happen.

  4. The issue in the crowd isn't about CCW, it's about someone deciding that the best chance for survival is forward, not towards the exits.

    I agree in principle, but you have to admit that for your average non-Chuck Norris person, an AR-15 >= Bare Hands in most cases, especially against a prepared opponent.

  5. I pray they release the CVR tapes after the investigation.

    We've seen some serious collapses in CRM in the 17 over the last year that have led to some very close calls. I think this could be classified as a close call. AMC really needs to look at the number of highly experienced guys they are shoving out the door to go fly other MWS's. The community as a whole is hemorrhaging experience and backfilling with guys fresh out of Altus. Additionally, we see a lot of guys who are slammed into upgrades (especially IP school) primarily for career progression when he or she may not otherwise be sent. This mix is obviously not working out too well for us. I know nothing bout the experience level of this crew (all 19 of them), but perhaps this, and a few of the other recent mishaps, could have been mitigated though a slightly more seasoned pool from which we are building crews. It's only going to get worse.

    As for upgrade...you're saying that maybe, just maybe, the "weekend warrior" ANG/AFRC guys are on to something, with regard to our glacial pace for upgrade? Say it isn't so!

    I agree with all your comments...too many people upgraded who shouldn't be, for the wrong reasons, and plenty of good dudes who are shoved into the deep end before they're ready IMHO.

    SQUADRONS at CHS get one local a week, 5 sorties a month now? No wonder! That's insane! And don't tell me the sim is the same! Thats total bullshit! But as long as we keep fixing symptoms, we will continue to hemorage, wreck jets, crews, hang dudes out to dry, kill people (the wrong people) and screw ourselves over.

    Poetic justice: the crew bus driver at KMCF waited for over two hours for the jet to arrive at the spot and missed shift change.

  7. The real question is. Do you want to have that level of tempo as a Guard/Reserve guy? Is 165 days (I assume you meant days and not hours) higher, about right, or low of what you want.

    I'm averaging about 110 days past two years with a full time civ job and I think it sucks. I'd like to cut that back to about 60 days per year. Hard to do when the Guard/Reserve brass insist on parity with AD so no way to cut down certs/quals to reduce the pain not to mention the non-flying BS we deal with. But I digress.

    I had a civilian job for ~4 years after MQT and finally quit (took a 9 month salary buy-out, actually) in order to live the guard bum dream. So, I concur...being a pilot and TDY >100 days per year plus a civilian job has got to suck! I averaged around 50-60 when I was still at my civvie job, which wasn't bad...it was more the 70-80 hour weeks that wore me out. Now, I have less work, less hassle, and am much much happier now even though I am gone more. Of course, the thing about guard bumming is that it can't last forever...so currently waiting on an airline (or ten) to call. BL: I choose to be TDY as much as I am...and love it!

    How many of those days are local flights? Or does that depend on how close you are to a range like Phx or Slc?

    Well, in the tankers at my unit we usually fly up to the Volk range or maybe Hardwood (sts).

    What is going to happen is the AF will admit nothing and then play possum (do nothing) until the new CoS arrives and then hand Gen Welsh several heaping, steamy piles of shit to wade through.

    Stop loss? I don't think it will go that far. Pilot shortage that has to be explained to congress? Absolutely.

    I agree that it won't go all the way to stop loss, unless a new conflict suddenly erupts. Unfortunately, I also don't think this will even be a blip on congress' radar, especially with this being an election year.

    A 15 year cycle of stupid decisions repeating themselves seems about right based on watching it happen twice now.

  9. Kind of off subject guys, but I am AD and want nothing more than to get out of this craziness called AD and join all my buddies in the guard/reserve. If I get passed over twice for O-4 while on AD, 1-will hiring boards look down on me because of that, and 2-will I still be able to be promoted to O-4 if I do get hired?

    I am starting my BS online master's this week by the way to check that box.

    It will depend on the unit...as was mentioned, some are hurting for people. Others are well versed in active duty shennanigans and won't care that you were passed over.

    Either way, I believe you will need a waiver to get into a guard unit if you are twice passed over. We recently hired two guys in that boat and they needed it. Time will tell if they were good hires.

    You are saying the airliners are so poorly designed, that they would compressor stall becuase of the disturbed airflow into the engine due to the crabbing for the crosswind?

    Compressor stalls were fairly common in the -135E, which had TF33s lifted from 707s. One would assume the actual 707s that used to roam the earth would have similar issues.

    Typically they would happen at high power settings with a relatively high crosswind component of maybe 15-20 knots. When it'd happen, you would swear the damned engine just blew up...loud as shit and the whole jet would rock violently. Had it happen on go-around twice but think those were due to either ham-fisting the throttles or mx issues.

  12. They mention 2017 as being the worst year of the shortage. Interestingly, if you look at the mandatory retirement data from American Airlines and Delta (and I am sure the other airlines' curve looks similar), their peak pilot retirements will be then as well. Wonder who is going to win the battle for talent?

    I personally think pilot retention is going to be way worse that the USAF is currently predicting. They deserve it, unfortunately.

  13. Definitely an abundance of queep and chickenshit in deployed environments. Awards packages for this and that, having to take a base picture in the middle of a war zone, guys getting pulled off the bus at the end of 12+ hour days to stand in a formation to fluff some dipshit's ego, laser focus on uniform wear. No shit, we had people roaming the base at night looking for people without reflective belts. We had the manpower for this, but not to do something about the rockets hitting the base weekly. That said, being on the road is awesome can be awesome. I remember being TDY to Alaska, not shaving for weeks, getting hammered at 0730 and then taking pictures with a moose.

    1) Best job anyone could realistically hope to have (exceptions such as porn star, rock star, trust fund baby, lottery winner, etc apply) IMHO. I could write volumes about all the awesome stuff I have been able, and continue, to do (and I'm "only" a tanker guy, mind you) that it would boggle your mind.

    2) Notice I said "best JOB" above. It's still a job. Like any job, there are less desirable aspects to military flying but in my opinion they are vastly outweighed by the good aspects. Try to dodge as much BS as possible, minimize queep, focus on the mission, and never forget...you are living the "good old days" right now.

Protesters angry over Quran burnings by American troops lobbed grenades Sunday at a U.S. base in northern Afghanistan and clashed with police and troops in a day of violence that left seven international troops wounded and two Afghans dead.

    "The response needs to be apologized for by (President Hamid) Karzai and the Afghan people for attacking and killing our men and women in uniform and overreacting to this inadvertent mistake," Santorum said on NBC's "Meet the Press". "That is the real crime here, not what our soldiers did."

    The president's apology suggests that there is blame and that the U.S. did something wrong "in the sense of doing a deliberate act," Santorum said.

    Santorum says that rather than saying he was sorry, Obama should have only acknowledged that burning copies of Islam's holiest book in a trash pit was wrong and taken responsibility for the incident, "but to apologize, I think, lends credibility that somehow or another that it was more than that."

    Santorum is the latest Republican to criticize Obama for apologizing for burning the religious materials. Despite apologies from the president and other U.S. officials for what they said was a mistake, their regrets have not quelled the anger of Afghans, who viewed the Quran burnings as an illustration of what they perceive as foreign disrespect for their culture and religion.
