The anecdotal evidence is that you might just get to walk away if you’re a part-timer and fail out of UPT/don’t end up with your hired position. @OptFire is right about actually signing papers and incurring a smaller commitment for OTS, but I haven’t really heard of them enforcing it if you bomb out of UPT. More stories of folks that WANT to stay Mil and just change into Maintenance or Intel or something if they fail out over them forcing you to change careers/fulfill the service commitment.

@Hopefulflyer389 is also spot on that you don’t owe 10 years until you get wings slapped on your chest at the end of UPT.

So to that end, with 2.5 since you get wings at the end of T6 now (correct me if I'm wrong) does that commitment still start at winging, or at the end of UPT? Unless end of T6 is considered end of UPT now at the 2.5 bases.

Can I ask why the long break in time between your AFOQT/TBAS and your board? Multiple applications? Or did you just wait for a particular unit? I'm 25, taking my AFOQT and TBAS after I graduate this October.

I boarded three times, applied four times. The date I have listed here was the board I got hired on. I started taking the tests while I was still in college, and didnt board for the first time until 2017 if I remember correctly.

  3. Go guard! I'm not saying straight up forget about fighters, but give the heavy units a chance. You'd likely get quite a few interviews. I'd at least give a heavy squadron a visit and see what it's all about. Start shooting out applications if you haven't already. Are there AD rated board dates out already? They cancelled a few this year, so just be aware of that.

Thanks for taking a look! Might just have to switch to another employer who is willing to offer differential for OTS/UPT/seasoning instead of hoping and praying. Honestly a little surprised no defense contractors are willing to do it except Lockheed.

Thats a long time to pay someone who isn't providing the company anything. I get what you're saying, but also understand it from the companies side.

Went to FL on vacation a few weeks ago and we traveled to on a Wednesday. Overhearing conversation around us, there were quite a few people sitting near us on business trips. Definitely not an official sign that business travel is coming back, but there are definitely people traveling for work. I'd imagine some business travel may never come back, but I really don't think the technology we have is reliable enough to replace the majority of business travel and will definitely not replace the importance of human interaction/collaboration during business meets.

I work for an automotive supplier, and some recent events have indicated director level management is going to be looking at increasing international travel to get more eyes on things in our plants around the world. Sometimes just having a fresh set of eyes on things makes a world of difference.

I'm pretty sure South Park did an episode about this 20 years ago.

The lack of a south park season, with so much happening over the last year, is sad.

For all you test pilots. True home build hanging it out there more than I'd be willing to.

Peter builds some pretty cool stuff. Smart dude, but too relaxed about the test phase sometimes. Hopefully there is more behind the scenes. Still cool though.

The Hope Hotel sucks; it's run down and broken.

I didn't think it was all that bad. It wasn't the Ritz, but not bad. The restaurant attached to it wasn't bad either. I think I got coupons to use for it from the front desk.

If you golf, bring your clubs. There are courses on and near base. Something to do in the afternoons.

It’s not inevitable that it will never charge as fast as a fill up, they just haven’t figured it out yet. It’s not ready to replace ICE.

I can agree with that. Which is why I believe it makes a damn good substitute for the time being, and even still a replacement for some people. It just depends on your location, and driving situation. Certainly not a replacement by any means quite yet.

The tech isn’t ready. I’m not spending 96 minutes at a time on a road trip charging a car. Get back to me whet it’s 5 minutes.

That's what I mean. The problem here is convenience. I'll agree it's not convenient to have to spend time charging on a long road trip, due to current tech. But I wouldn't say the tech isn't ready. Electric will likely never "refill" as fast as gasoline. That's a known factor going into EVs. Don't like it, then dont buy an EV. If you plan for it, or take a non EV on long trips, it's no longer an issue. If you purchase an EV and it's your only vehicle, that's something you need to think about if you plan on driving long distances.

That just highlights that the tech isn’t ready for prime time.

The tech isn't ready or the people aren't ready? I dont necessarily want to add 2.5 hrs to an already 14 hr drive either, but it's a known factor when getting into electric cars. If 90% of your driving is less than 40 miles a day, you dont have this issue hardly ever, and can charge overnight at home. I think the real issue is expectations vs reality. Most people realize that the energy density of gasoline in higher, and it's nearly impossible to recharge an EV at the same speeds it takes to refill a gas tank in a normal car. As it stands, EVs are not perfect XC vehicles. Short trips are where they excel. It's like buying a 172 and expecting it to fly across the country without stopping like a jet.

  13. Make sure you check to see if you're allowed to bring boats from other states wherever you go. Sometimes places have laws against this as to not cross contaminate invasive species or something. And try to figure out a storage location.

I’m enjoying ATC-Zero ops. Some of the less busy towers are going to CTAF-Ops around 2200 or so.

My local Class D was like this for most of the covid times during 2020. It was weird turning the lights on myself and making pattern calls there, but it was pretty cool. They're pretty much back to normal ops now though as far as the tower goes.

Tracking.  I have aftermarket performance heads (came that way), that are in great shape and really help add HP.  However, the stud kit for those heads requires constant re-torquing which I wanted to avoid so I went with a set that requires initial an torque then one retorque after break in.  It also had a racing cam which was great for power but a bit more difficult as a daily driver (my wife hated it....really had to feather the clutch in first gear).  I am happy with the outcome, easier to drive but still enough power to remind me of my lost youth (jumped on it yesterday and had the rear end hoping).

Ahh gotcha. I had never heard of having to retorque on head studs. Aluminum heads? I had steel (class rule) so maybe that makes a difference. After break in makes sense to me though. Nothing like firing up a new engine for that initial break in. New to me! I had some aftermarket stuff too, but I dont remember them requiring any re-torquing. But they also didn't have a dedicated stud kit. I wonder if that's just a stud kit thing in general?

Sad thing is that new manual, normally aspirated sports cars are becoming exceedingly rare - especially something with no electronic supervision like that old school vette.  It's a shame.

Its unfortunate but the emissions laws and automation are going to make great drivers cars a thing of the past

Agreed, but people want fuel economy, and naturally aspirated and electronically controlled shifting are how we get there. That and it's just easier to adjust how a car runs throughout the year, i.e. in the cold months or something similar. There just isn't a demand for manual cars anymore, so it doesn't make sense from a manufacturing standpoint. They used to be cheaper to make, but with lower demand, it's simply more expensive to tool up a line for such a low volume.

But that's why we build cars! It's not dirt cheap, but building a SBC can be incredibly economical (relatively). Sure you could dump a lot of money into a SBC, but if you want something that sounds aggressive and puts out decent power, it's not all that expensive really. For a fun sunday driver, anything north of 400HP is overkill honestly. Not that I wouldn't want more HP myself haha.

Had a setback when assembling the first time, while torquing the heads one of the head bolt threads pulled out of the block. I could have fix it myself if it wasn't such a critical item. Had to wait another ten days to get a slot at the machine shop so he could jig it correctly and put a helicoil in it.

Not that it would have solved the problem, or maybe it would have, but just for added coolness since you're not putting out wicked high HP (still a good amount though), there are some fairly economical head stud kits out there. I found one that was significantly cheaper than an ARP head stud kit, and was very impressed with the quality of it.
