Do you think your reaction might have to do with your blood type? I remember you mentioning something about that when you got COVID and it was pretty bad for you.

I've also heard that if you already had covid, the first shot is usually the hard hitter, and for those who didn't have covid, the second shot is the hard hitter. But I'm only an engineer so I dont really know.

On the vaccine side...I got it at 1130, my arm was a little sore by 1430, and a lot sore by 1930.  Went to bed old man early and woke up at 0130 absolutely freezing and my arm hurts like a MFer.  I took some Tylenol and the fever is gone...I'm tired and sore so will relax today.  Overall it was slightly worse than the Flu shot.  Good luck to all who decided to get it before they decide for you.

Pretty much my experience with it. Arm soreness kicked in a few hours later, next day had the chills and body aches. Subsided 90% by the next day. Second shot pretty much the same thing. Body aches were a little more present the second day after, and my fever broke hard at night. Woke up drenched in sweat twice. But not bad overall. Mild inconvenience at best.

Had a beer with my neighbor who has a Tesla yesterday.  He sold his 2015sh BMW 4 series coup for it.  His thoughts.....Tesla is stupid fast, but does not compare to the handling of the 4 series.  His wife thinks the interior is cheap vs the Bmer and doesn't ride as well.

Hes super techy so he thinks its cool.

I mean, I wouldn't necessarily expect it to surpass the handling and interior of a BMW, since they're typically excellent on both of those fronts.

Not-a-damn-thing. Meet people, hang out, that's about it... Most/some units put you into student flight, but you might be able to "opt-out".

I was in student flight (still am? They're dissolving ours I think) but the pilot hires just sign in at student flight for roll call then dip out to the squadron instead of staying there all day.

For those of you hired off the street, what have you typically do/done on drill weekends? Looking for some perspective before my first one this weekend.

Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

Pretty much nothing. Get to know everyone in the squadron, sit in on any briefs/meetings I can. Get some stuff out of the way like computer access, getting uniforms and flight suits ordered. But otherwise typically just about nothing.

Congrats, not taking away from your hard work by any means and I'm sure you earned it my man.

It just appears from the outside looking in that it was already a done deal, like this guy has hung around the bar and slapped hands with the pilots for 4 years we already know we want him and it would look bad if we went with an outsider. So just sucks going up neck and neck against other good dudes with the only difference being this guy is homegrown. I guess that's the nature of the game.

If that's the case I'll take it on the chin and move on, but I really don't think that's always the case. The whole local guy been here for a few years lets give him a nod and see how he interviews, should only matter up to the interview, beyond that it should only about who would we rather have around for 20 yrs or who do we trust can handle the mission and not fail UPT, etc...

Sounds like you think this individual doesn't fit the part on that last bit? Being the local probably does give a leg up getting the interview, but as you said, should be a level playing field once you get to the interview. I interviewed multiple times at the unit I ended up getting hired at, and plenty of local dudes got passed up each interview. Maybe that guy has been interviewing for the past few years and they finally gave him a shot. I'd refrain from making assumptions when you're on the interviewee side of the table. Just my $0.02.

  8. I also wouldn't hold off shuttling off apps if MEPS is the only thing you dont have done. It's not a requirement on most of the applications I've seen or done. But I haven't applied anywhere in 2 years.....so what do I know. MEPS will help them know you dont have any issues, but if you have everything else, get those bad boys flying and use all the time you can.

    Quick rant,

Any of you off the street or out of towners find it annoying to take time sending applications, spend money to rush and attend boards, only to hear through the grapevine afterwards they went with the local kid from afe or crew chief. Like if that was your pick the whole time why even have a board besides for formality, save me the time and money. Either have a board with only members from your unit or quit putting so much damn emphasis on people just because they’re already in the unit.

Or they went with the local kid because he interviewed better. There may be some bias towards the local guy, but it comes down to how the unit likes you on that interview weekend. Yeah it sucks, but them's the breaks sometimes. I was passed over for local guys a few time, but then got it after sticking with it.

You don't think they added some deice fluid to their boiling water water?  And where did they get the heat to boil the water, a volcano?

The article from the original testing of that deicing picture states that it is just boiling water sprayed at a high pressure. So, I'd say no deice fluid to answer your question. They aren't trying to make these things fly, just free up to operate normally. Where they get the heat is irrelevant to the picture/point of it. The picture was used incorrectly to try and make it seem as if windmills cannot operate in icy conditions. When they indeed can and do quite regularly.

It would make sense for your FC1 to have to be completed in order to submit for the NGB/ Reserve Board, because what if you DQ for something during your FC1?

Like Fox said, they'll give you the slot, but its basically pending an approved FC1. Don't get one approved, lose the slot. That's why they ask if you want short-fall dates, so you can take someone's spot when that happens.

  12. 16 hours ago, Terminator5 said:

Yeah that's exactly along the lines of what I was thinking. @ryleypavDo you have confirmed OTS/UPT dates now prior to your FC1?

Ha. No. I dont have anything. My selection package is up at NGB. Should be approved by now, but havent gotten that fancy letter from them.

    19 hours ago, Terminator5 said:

Not sure if NGB and the reserve board works the same. But once my package gets approved by NGB is that when they issue OTS dates? If that is the case then my recruiter is sending my package to NGB now and that is prior to me getting my FC1 so it is definitely possible. However, I can see it being the other way around as well with them not wanting to issue OTS/UPT dates to someone who may not even be eligible considering their FC1 has not been done/stamped approved yet.

NGB and the reserves probably do things different I'd imagine. Your package gets approved by NGB, you'll get a letter stating so, then you get to wait some more for OTS dates. You basically get put in the queue to receive them once your package is approved. Typically guard guys dont get UPT dates until part way through OTS.

Finally was fortunate enough to get picked up off the street for a fighter unit in the fall, starting my own timeline:

    Hired: Aug 2020

MEPS: Dec 2020 (initial processing was delayed due to miscommunication on COVID protocols, had to go back for a vision consult in Jan 2021 which required a waiver)

    Enlistment: Feb 2021

    FC1: ?

    OTS: ?

    UPT:?

Good luck to everyone out there, COVID certainly isn't making anything easier.

Ask you're recruiter to get the officer selection package going as soon as you can lol. See about about not needing the FC1 done yet. Hopefully it'll get you some OTS days faster. Congrats!

Has anyone found any other avenue on communicating where your package is in this process besides your recruiter?

You're recruiter is typically the go to for this, but you can check with pilots in your squadron to see if they know anyone who can get answers. The AF is small enough that someone usually knows someone.

Reserves on AD orders, so not sure if it’ll be exactly the same, but I got the 1st Pfizer shot last night. Local Public Health was offering up extras and it was a “can you be here in 30?” call. My wife got her shot (healthcare worker, as well) and heard them saying they had extra doses, so she gave my number.

I tried to get it at the base clinic the same day and they had extras, but got told by the AD folks I needed a higher-up-the-chain-than-worth-it auth to get it because I’m Reserves. I’m on long term AD orders, downrange two weeks ago with issues due to potential crew exposures/sickness and looking like I might be headed out again this coming week, so I didn’t think it was crazy to inquire. But, I guess it’s a bigger hurdle for me to get an available dose than for them to give the extras to the retirees.

Reserves only offer it during UTAs and those filled rapidly, so gist I’ve heard is to get it on the outside, if possible.

I haven’t run it through the wickets yet, so no info on whether there’s any pushback. There’s no cost involved, so Tricare should be a non issue and it didn’t sound like there was going to be one from flight med outside the 48 hour DNIF. Then again, I haven’t handed them the card yet because shit weather and I’m not flying in that window, so maybe the pee pee smack is coming...

Zero side effects from it, besides a little soreness in the arm. Less than Tetanus or Typhoid, so not really even worth mentioning. Second shot is fragged ~3 weeks out and supposedly public health just calls for scheduling it.

11/10, would recommend over a few of the ass kickings I’ve heard from perfectly healthy folks that were unfortunate enough to not have the Diet COVIDs.

Weird how different everyone does it. My guard base had a "open-season" day for the vaccine on sunday of last UTA. By appointment only on Saturday and Sunday you could just stroll up and get it if you wanted to.

Update on the ol' timeline for guard fighter squadron:

    Hired: AUG 2020

    MEPS: FEB 2020

    ENLISTMENT: ?

    FC1: ?

    OTS: ?

    UPT: ?

Hope I'm not in an old folks home by the time I get to UPT. Hurry up and wait I guess.

Just an fyi to hopefully help speed things along, you're recruiter is most certainly able to send up your package to NGB to get OTS dates, without your FC1 being done or approved. You'll have to send the FC1 up after its approved, but if they say they need the FC1 to get your officer selection package up and approved, that's not true. Trust me.

I amin Austin.  We have been hit hard by this winter storm.  Roads have been impassable for the last two days.  Last night it went down to 5F!  A new record low.

Lots of pipes breaking, especially in apartment buildings.

All utilities in Texas have been ordered to reduce power consumption.  Allsources of power, even nuclear, are suffering from outages due to frozen plumbing.  Windmills are pretty much shut down.  Natural gas is reduced also, but not as bad.

The City operated power grid said they would rotate power outages, but really it looks like you either have power or not.  My daughter, for example, has been without power for two days.

I live on the edge of the city, but get my power from a large electric coop.  My power rotates on a fairly predictable schedule, 2 hours off and about four hours on.

Because the roads are so bad the stores are running out of food since the trucks can’t make deliveries.

I have a Harbor Freight 2000 watt generator that helps us limp through the outages.  Being a former EWO, I also have a Ham radio station that can operate off grid on solar power when our society finally breaks  down.

That picture is from 2014 in Sweden, when the company Alpine Helicopters was testing de-icing windmill blades during an ice storm with boiling water.

I get the irony, but it's a false narrative using that picture for the current events.
