For my last 3 or so years on active duty, I adopted the practice of calling authority figures in my chain of command "management" rather than "leadership".

Fortunately, I had Squadron leadership that rocked and were flying top cover for me, otherwise I'm sure I'd have added another LOR or something to my already-impressive record of administrative slaps on the wrist.

SQ/CC: "Hacker, have you briefed Group leadership on the ADVON plan?"

Me: "Sir, I did brief management, and they did not have any questions."

SQ/CC: "Why do you keep using the term 'management'?"

Me: "I'll call them "leadership" when they re-earn that title.  In the mean time, I'll call them what they actually are in practice."

SQ/CC: "I guess I won't be putting you up for Wing Staff anytime soon....you're dismissed."

One of those LORs is stillLEGEND

From that ilk I've heard "you are a lightbulb. When you burn out I replace you with another one." Fantastic advice for resource management.

It takes little time to create a toxic culture. It takes YEARS to fix it.

ill add on another true story gem "I view you guys as tiny mammals any myself a big dinosaur...and i want you to know that the big dinosaur is proud of all you tiny mammals"

Dude, Unless you are Goldfein himself, NOTHING is going to change.  We've heard the call to cleanse the system of toxic leaders before and nothing came of it, the primary reason I ran for the airlines and a guard unit at my first opportunity almost three years ago.

If you want a toxic community look no further than AFSOC.  Two of the worst most caustic humans that have ever lived have risen to become General Officers in AFSOC.  One gave 30+ commander directed Q-3s while commanding the 15th SOS.  As a Group/CC and deployed JSOAC/CC he hammered a dude in my community for losing his weapon down range, only to lose his gun a short time later and have it covered up by his command chief.  He openly hates anything outside of his realm like the Weapons School and actively fought to end the program, going as far as shaming people who wore their graduate patch, then surrounded himself with patches downrange.  As the Group/CC  he flew a CV-22 into a tree, almost rolling the aircraft into the dirt.  That little escapade got him a commander directed Q-3 of his own from the Wing/CC which would have ended any other officer's career, his punishment was to be there Wing/CC at Cannon where I hear he salted the earth and left a trail of destruction.  Through all of this and multiple IG complaints from people I respect, NOTHING happened and he is now a two star select.  Until you fix assholes like him, NOTHING will change.

When I dropped my separation papers there was some doubt, the brothers and sisters I fought with were incredible people who shaped my life, now I look at the decision as the best of my life because I don't have to watch toxic leaders destroy the Air Force I love.

You're spot on....the guy who groomed him wasn't much better

30 commander directed q-3's?! Wow. That alone speaks volumes.

UPT is toxic. It's full of guys who were "screwed over" in their previous community. Now they are mentoring all the young folks on why the Air Force sucks. Sounds like a great recipe.

Some truth to that statement but guys are smart enough to see the bull shit for themselves...and these days it's not hard to see

    1. Fox said the munition was a dumb bomb in their initial reports. So your assertion is actually wrong.

    2. Jenkspaz is right that its GPS guided, hence he corrected my post that the munition is not dumb or unguided. You must of totally skipped his post.

    3. The point is you're still not dropping a GPS guided MOAB over N. Korea out the back of a Herk with all the AAA and SAMs going off in the early days of a war.

    4. I shouldn't have to explain this to you with the IADs they have setup in the north. I guess you actually need to have been on the ROK to know how they have their defenses setup or read the assessment for Korea.

hey  man take this however you want IDGAF, but in most of your posts you come across as a huge ass hole

A bonus is necessary. Some enlisted career fields receive a reenlistment bonus too. If the AF functioned as intended and stopped offering a bonus across the board, we would hemorrhage enlisted and officers. You don't think money or a bonus matters? I ask E's if they are interested in becoming aviators. All the E's I spoke with said they would only fly RPAs and that's only if they receive equal pay to an officer.

I can't speak for everyone, but take away the bonus for pilots and watch how many leave at the end of their commitment.

    You're missing the point

The military retention problem will end as soon as our entire defense establishment shows senior CGOs and junior FGOs that it cares about ONE THING ONLY:

    WINNING.

I'm talking everything from MWS selection, development, fielding, and utilization.  All the personnel woes.  Training for combat in a way that matters, and recognizing those who do well.  Executing our mission in ways which is meaningful, in conflicts chosen smartly / fought smartly / with an end state actually in mind (and attainable).

MAKE US WIN AGAIN AND WE WILL WORK FOR FREE.  I WANT TO PLAY FOR A WINNING TEAM, but more importantly, I WANT TO PLAY FOR A TEAM THAT CARES ABOUT WINNING.

    Seriously, it's that simple.

    fck yes

  8. update to deployment pay fiasco:

Finance paid out combat tax free for one month...but for the two months in 2016 they didn't pay any $$$...rather gave me a corrected W-2

sure that's fine if you think of taxable income amount and cold hard cash is 1 for 1 substitution.

I think its a $hitty deal how they "fixed" the issue, but im sure there's an AFI governing this...anyone in the know have more details?

There were three of us who called base finance and all three got different answers

Awesome gouge.  Thx guys.  Are FWB/Mary Esther decent enough for a family, or is the drive (either direction) worthwhile?

FWB/ME are fine for families...driving to navarre every day would take years off my life why choose to have a shitty commute home?

Not really, cameras are really frowned upon in cockpits.  A lot of leadership thinks if you have time to make videos, you have time for work.  I really liked the F-14 last cruise video, the 10 ship up initial is quite impressive.

The navy does this right most of those cruise videos are pretty cool

but then again what else is there to do stuck on a boat for 6 months

No, mainly because shoving more pilots into a single jet doesn't solve your problem. Eventually, the "good flyer" jets will have to go into phase inspections and the like (365/728). Plus, I'm pretty sure the stealth upkeep requires more time in the hangar per flight hour.

    lol

Both of those statements are bullshit. Someone's going to get shitfaced on a mission?

Think about a professional athelete who does something stupid in his/her off-time. They usually get a fine or suspension but their ability or judgment on the field or court or whatever isn't called into question. And the whole team doesn't have to wear diapers.

disagree both his statements are 100% logical
