Reserve dude here currently in T 1's whose sponsoring unit is "forecasted" to be closed. I have a feeling alot of dudes will be looking for jobs at other units in the near future. Wondering If it's a good idea to "pitch the switch" to my sponsoring unit while in upt. Really don't want to be that guy, but I also don't want to be left without a chair when the music stops either. Thoughts?

I was recently asked to write a Letter of Recommendation for the first time....I ended up here and now I am resurrecting this thread. I can't put enough emphasis on this. I feel that Knowing your job inside and out and executing your duties and responsibilities in a competent manner is an excellent way to mentor a younger generation. At my first unit this style of mentorship took precedence over the occasional chit chat, beer etc. However there is always a fine line between education and indoctrination....... As a young typical enlisted dude (TED?) I made it a point to seek out mentorship. When I took up the subject with my supervisor, he then proceeded to tell me that I should emulate the actions of those who excelled in the squadron and that I was in a "self managed" career field and that it would be unwise to go looking for a "Dad". Needless to say I labeled my supervisor somewhat of a dick after our little "mentoring session" and I sought advice from others in the squadron in regards to PME, testing for SSgt etc., only to receive the same reply..."your career should be self managed" Well this was all great, as I became somewhat of a self reliant chap, but I felt the leadership could have done a better job at mentoring the younger folks..and my experience seems to be consistent with others in this thread in that mentorship was almost nonexistent in regards to an actual sit down one on one chat with a mentor in which a legitimate exchange of goals and aspirations actually took place......something that needs to happen IMO.

Thanks for posting that. I had no idea that the Silicon Valley was so involved in Electronic Warfare during the Cold War. I have the following thoughts.... 1. Lectures like this are few and far between in Universities these days. Unfortunately Military History is somewhat unfashionable in today's Academia. In 2007 the American Historical Association published a report which found that out of 15,847 History Professors in the United States, only 1.9 percent were identified as Military Historians. It seems the trend is to focus on the History of Race, Class, and Gender, which is fine, but shouldn't college graduates know something about how wars begin and how they end? How can Americans even criticize military strategy when there is roughly a 1.9 percent chance we even took a Military history course in college? 2.Also, the next time I think that life sucks I'll just be glad I'm not pulling 10 hour Bomb Runs on 02 deep into Germany, with absolutely no fighter support, hoping that the marksmanship of my tail gunner exceeds that of the Luftwaffe Fighter Corps..... Yuck.

Alone: The Classic Polar Adventure by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd This is the autobiography of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Byrd is often associated with early aviation in Antarctica but he also performed a number of research expeditions. Byrd essentially writes about his 5 months in isolation during his second expedition to Antarctica in 1934. Byrd volunteered to operate a remote meteorological research station alone near the south pole. His story is incredible and I believe this to be the greatest solo adventure narrative ever written.

curtiswg: I interviewed twice this past October. Both interviews were at Air Force Reserve C-130 units. As far as making a good impression and interviewing tips, here is my advice: These interviews work both ways. Yes, they are interviewing you, but you need to interview them as well. Granted when you interview, you are essentially a guest, and you should act accordingly, but if the Unit feels that you have an obvious invested interest in the people you could potentially be working with for 20 plus years, then I think you will make a good impression. Be Honest, Be Genuine, Be Professional. As far as interview tips. I had my wife print out the "Standard Interview Questions" thread on this website. She asked me every question and I answered every single one them the best I could. It didn't take that long and I felt it was well worth the time. As far as your scores go, I had similar numbers and I got hired. Again, Be Honest, Genuine, and Professional. I'm sure you will do fine. -J.
