Due to poor planning for flying in low illumination (darkness) and mountainous terrain, Pilot lost SA and landed in the wrong LZ....multiple times.

Any port in a storm, sailor!

  2. There’s a balance to what I’m about to say, but a while ago people went through life acknowledging that everyone has shit happen to them, has a hard day/week/month/year, etc. People sucked it up and persevered, because there was no other good option. The weak ones didn’t make it. And that was life. Nowadays, there’s so much push for therapy and talking about feelings, and it’s OK to be sad and confused and blah blah - how about sack up and get on with life.

I mean the first thing I said, which is there’s a balance. I’m not anti-mental health and taking care of it. But when I see large majorities of people not being able to handle their fragile emotions, I have to say most of them just need to suck it up and stop being weak little candy asses. But they won’t, because our society and culture  enables them to be weak. Leave the mental health work for those who truly need it, and not for every swinging dick who’s simply a because they were never taught an ounce of resiliency.

  3. Another minor thing, but it annoys the absolute out of me - my USAA cards lock whenever I travel and try to use them.

You'd think a company literally made for people who travel a lot for work wouldn't shit the bed every time. Not being able to get cash because my debit card locked has been a genuine liability more than once. Especially at red flag..

    Sometimes a credit card just won’t do…

  4. True.  We definitely had more hulls.  I'd be curious to see the relative cost of those hulls vs gdp and adjusted for inflation.  Granted crashing an F-4 in 1965 was in real dollars cheaper than crashing an F-22 today, but by how much?  A straight inflation calculator says a 2.4M F-4 in 1965 would be equivalent to 23M today, but there's a lot more in a proper calculation of value then that.  What's more, I would argue that our pilots are lower density and much more high value add today than they were in 1965.  For example when I moved to the C-130J, it was clear you couldn't have a timid CP who got beat up by the FE for a year before getting value out of him.  We had to train CPs to think like ACs and mission commanders from day one.  I've heard the same about wingmen in the F-22 and F-35.  High value add from day one, and that learning curve will only get steeper with net-centric warfare being what it is.
Either way, I stand by the argument that we've shrunk from risk inappropriately and that it is actively hurting our nation defense.  My gut tells me it's the result of spineless leadership, but that's entirely opinion.

Your opinion is more common than you might think in your community

  5. This.
I remember not that long ago, a room could be had on base for like $39 - no shit - then, almost overnight, it seemed like prices shot up 3X. It made absolutely no sense and made it so that you might as well just stay off base and get the points and better facilities.

I paid $7/night for the DV suite at Randolph on TDY in 1991 because the BOQs were booked. Went to SAT on vacation and stayed in the same suite, for the same price, SPACE-A a year later.

  6. Did I say anything to that effect? The post I replied to asked about continuing to fly the T-6 while doing T-1 sims.

You didn’t. Just commenting on the topic in general. The idea of “knocking off the rust” is a joke though. You have to actually have some experience to rust…

  7. Question 1: Yes, but I believe it’s closer to 3 months.
2: No, the rust from not actually flying isn’t going to be much of an issue as your follow-on aircraft is going to be vastly different than the T-6, unless you FAIP.

There is a HUGE difference between a T-6 only pilot and those who went before. The 100-ish hours of experience attained in T-1s/T-38s is huge, especially when addressed in the context of a syllabus designed for someone with over TWICE the experience.
