  1. A retired 0-5? This is who you worship? The internet is a wonderful thing. Hacker, you probably shouldn't have posted that. There are several books about shithot retired 0-5s, I had to read some of them. As you can imagine, those folks aren't being worshiped on an internet forum. This cat isn't one of those in the books. Go sample a few of his thousands of posts, where he claims to know everything about everything. Let me reiterate that...thousands of posts. On an internet forum. A retired 0-5. You've been had. Blah Blah Blah.

I would not call this one out if he did not chime in with a response to everything I type. I never offered a response to anything he typed unless he directly responded to me, because frankly, he did not type much of anything relevant. If what you typed about him is true - that he is a retired 0-5, he shouldn't be typing very much in a forum frequented by active aircrew. Blah Blah Blah.

I guess you'll need to craft a response, as will he, as will his followers. This is entertaining. And revealing. I can understand the sentiments of the posters who call me an idiot. If Rainman is your guy, hell, I'd call me an idiot too, there is no thermometer with enough degrees of separation between that dude and myself. Someone posted on here that commanders converse with retirees for advice. They seek advice from the thousands of retired Lt Cols? Come on guys. Some retired 0-5s say that commanders seek their advice, I've even seen some of them try to aggressively inject themselves into a young commander's unit. And clearly, some of them live on an internet forum, perpetuating their wisdom to the unsuspecting, no matter how dated or irrelevant.

    What a shame.

Dearest Sir. I thank you for your thoughtful and insightful internet forum posting. After reviewing your sage words, I now see that all other advise I've seen on this message board is wrong and I am incorrect to follow such folly. I hearby pledge to listen to you because your advise and experience are far more superior. If you have the time, I'd am seeking advise on many issues.

For example, for those 1st Lts that were recently passed over, what can they do to fix the travesty?

The election will upon us and I still haven't decided if I should vote as I heard from a liberal once that military people should remain apolitical and thus not participate in selecting their civilian leadership. Should I vote anyway, and if so, who should I vote for?

I thank you for your time, as I'm sure it is quite valuable as a very senior person of vast responsibility. We are truely blessed that you are able to take the time to participate.

    Regards,

    Mr Golami

  2. Harm did it in an episode of JAG. He "stole" a C-130 with Mac to escape from some bad place, probably Thailand. Anyway, he started it up all by him self (E or H1 based on the start buttons) while Mac asked standard silly copilot questions like, "You know how to fly one of these?" and "If we make any noise, we'll get caught!" Anyway, he was able to scilently start the engines and tookoff while being shot at. And of course, he pulled it off.

JAG fans seemed happy with that. I didn't see any huge controversy. Its not like if you write something in your book that us not true that the people will call you a huge phony and end your writing career. Just look at Creighton, he makes shit up all the time.

BTW, I'm not a JAG fan. I was flippin channels one day and saw a distance shot of a C-130 and thought, hey, whats this? I saw our impotent man, Harm, with the nice lady he cant ever seem to close the deal with, Mac and said, "oh, this is good." A few minutes later I was watching Law and Order and thinking, yeah, Hollywood is full of shit.

  3. Shouldn't be a problem, just work it out with the Flt CC. FWIW, there was a guy in my class that spent every weekend in San Antonio. He did poorly. He washed out. Another guy had a house and wife a few hours away. He did well, but he didn't go home every weekend. I think you get the hint.

  4. In order to toast this great American with Beers, I tip my hat to anther great American, the esteemed Senator from Wisconsin, John J. Blaine. Another great American achievement, or the undoing of a huge unamerican policy.

Cheers, Mr Neil Armstrong, and thanks for the unmeasurable inspiration you've given over your lifetime.

  5. One day a pal recommended a book, "One Second After" which caused me to look into civil defense. I found this website (http://www.tacda.org) which publishes/ed a magazine. Years ago I was able to read a few editions online and there were some interesting articles that apply to the short-term scenario (hurricane/flood/blizzard). One point I remember was that if you stock food, it should be stuff you can eat as part of your everyday eating. Once food starts getting to the end of its shelf life, start eating it and replacing it. That way you are not spending a chunck of dough and tossing it out. If you don't care about the moeny, donate it. They also talked about easy to store, basic food staples like dry rice, beans, oats, and other grains. A 50lb sack of a few of those can last quite some time. That is my plan, but not yet implemented. Its cheap and I'll donate the stuff when it gets old. As for water, the easiest is the common case of plastic bottles, but if you want a solid quantity, get a food grade 55gal drum. They even make a pump for the top.

BTW, the book tries to raise the alarm on EMP, but I was more facinated at the after effects. No new medicine, food production, rise of gangs, etc. If you liked Alas Babylon, you'd love this one.

  6. For one, he hasn't played the insanity card yet; that's just media speculation at this point.

To which I said I'm tired of the newsies speculating over this point all day long. But hey, speculation is what they love to do. I hear that they even interview guest speculators to speculate on what the anchor just speculated on.

Secondly, McVeigh wanted to use a "necessary defense" at his trial, alleging that he was in "imminent danger" from the government. his lawyers refused. He still went the route that the US Governments actions at Waco (Branch Davidians) were illegal therefore the bombing of the Murrah building in Oklahoma city was "a justifiable response." We all know how that worked out for him.

So, how can you claim that there is no way that insanity can play into this Holmes' actions in Aurora? One could easily argue that a sane person would never do such a thing, so I see it as being totally plausible for that very reason.

You need to explain your comment that anyone that disagrees with that needs to "recage their idea of sanity" as I don't get your point. You're saying that a person who walks into a crowded movie theater and open fire on hundreds of innocent people is sane because forethought and planning where involved? That's a pretty warped sense of sanity in my opinion!

My comparison to McVeigh was that he killed a whole lot of people, however justified. He was not insane. Alton Coleman was a serial murder, not insane. This asshole killed a bunch of people, so to make the leap that he's insane because a sane person would never ever do such a thing, is BS. If that were true, anyone that murders is insane.

Lastly, my final point is unchanged. Put the dog down.

  7. I don't care if he thinks he's insane, or if a doctor thinks so, or if a court thinks so. I heard enough BS from the newsies yesterday regarding insanity that I wanted to punch them in the mouth, Beuford T Justice style. The diabolical evil mind will use everything it can think of just to see how far they can manipulate people/systems. If anyone argues that a sane person would never gun down people like this, they need to recage their idea of sanity.

So, I don't care if anyone thinks he's insane. When found guilty, he should stop wasting the good earths air. Put the dog down. It worked for McVeigh.

2nd, this is the exact counter argument to any gun contol nut.

    A little food for thought...

  8. I'm hearing too many excuses, but hey, we don't know the facts. But don't make this situation light. This crew f u c k e d up and are damned lucky. The alternative could have been this headline, "C-17 crew kills Gen Mattis." There, does that make it sound serious enough? Crews, more so pilots, and even more so PICs, must have the ability to reprioritize. If they can't, then they need to find a different career.

And to any CP out there, if you don't have the balls to say "go around," learn or go do something else.

Edit: I didn't say XXXX, I said Eff You Cee Kay.

  9. I'm sure the Q3s will be memorable, but I envision that an epic 30 second ass chewing by Gen Mattis will leave scars for life.

I'd start with mission planning for this one. AP says, "Runway lights at Peter O Knight (KTPF) 5 NM NE may be easily confused with lights on Rwy 22 at MacDill (KMCF)." Warning on the approach plate (if it was even open to that page). Next, of course, is SA (runway size, shape of the airfield, relation to surrounding terrain/water, etc.). CRM, if there was any, as you all say will be the most interesting part of this one.

These guys got lucky that they were in a plane that stops well, that they touched down early, flaps were full (I assume), on speed (I assume), and didn't weigh too much (I assume). They could have easily departed the runway. This is a cheap lesson for us and I hope AMC sends out the tapes for our benefit.

  10. While I don't fly the MD80, there are some things I know, so here goes a few questions.

Solid EPR check (that is, N2, FF, EGT line up/make sense with take-off EPR)? Did you set the propper EPR, i.e. take-off and not go-around setting. High PA location? Dragging brakes? Take off on a "treadmill runway?" Search the archives, that was an entertaining topic of opinions!

  11. Rule 1: ACs must have a spine with a pair attached.

Rule 2: DOs and CCs must have a spine with a pair attached.

If the AC calls crew rest or safety of flight and fails to stand firm, the issue may be viewed as bullshit. If the DO doesn't have your back on legit matters, they are worthless. That said, the spectrum of crap crews pull is wide and distinguished. Everything from staying up all night playing Halo (LMs) to tossing out the boat anchor to stay at a sweet locale for another night has been played. When someone has a legit issue, ACs need to employ their spine. If you need a brace, call someone to roll in and assist.

  12. My turn.

I was back home not too long ago and somehow ended up chatting with a few gents that just happened to be elected officials. At one point, we chatted about the military. Want to guess what impresses them? I ain't no creed, chant, or cheer. They see right through that shit! Its the personal stories and seeing our guys in action. Take some of them out on a range and show them a team taking on the "enemy" and they just beam with pride. Tell them a story like the "Pedros" rescue, and they'll eat that morning noon and night for a month. Listen to them in their speeches. They never say, I went to base x and all the airmen chanted a creed and sang a song. No, they pull the personal connection string, "Let me tell you about SrA Joe Somebody, he's a real hero." Dogs and miniature horses shows are a waste of everyone's time. There are so many other great ways to tell a story of our efforts and not one of them involves a chant or song. Besides, looking a little disheveled adds to our true salty nature. There's a reason why Americans love the Dirty Dozen and any other scrappy team.

So, to our deployed command chief, I offer this viewpoint. Make mission first. When a codel shows up, show them people doing the mission. Let them step on a hot, dirty Herk as maintainers are getting her ready for a mission. Show them EOD taking care of business. Let them sit down for chow in the main room (not the special little room) with everyday joes. You get the point. When they leave, they will have seen the mission and gotten a few personal stories to tell their constituents. Lastly, since when is it the job of the US Military to please and stroke politicians? I thought it was to fight wars or do some of that Constitutional defending stuff. Reciting a chant will not protect the defense budget.

Now that everyone is doing mission first, there's no need to recite any songs or chants. However, I will offer this about the chant. If it was such a great and inspiring piece of literature, people would want to know it more that the latest Katy Perry song.

Lastly, I will end with some leadership. It stuff like this that makes my job essential. And that is to reset the priorities of those I work for, but more importantly, those that work with me.

  13. LRAFB got a new BX, and with it a gun counter. And thats a nice perk. They have a good selection and can order quite a bit more. When the local, county, and state sales tax is running close to 10%, getting that new M4 tax free is wonderful. Although, I wish they did FFL transfers.

But back to your topic. No one is making you shop at the BX, right? Commissary either? Think you can get the best grocery bill at Walmart, go for it. Want to buy your new TV at best buy, no one is stopping you. Don't like Anthony's pizza (yuk!), head off base for lunch, or make your own with your great value walmart ham and cheese. How about the class 6? Is thay your source for beer and booze? AAFEES gas station, is that where you fill up?

Also, gov't construction is pretty expensive compares to private companies. Gov't pays a high wage (Davis-Bacon) for workers on those jobs.

  14. Anyone have any good recommendations for a smaller rifle for beginners? I want to get my fiancee something for her to begin to get comfortable around guns but because of her height and small frame, 4'11'' and maybe 98lbs it is a little tricky having her use my rifles. I was thinking possibly something the youths use or maybe a small .22? Anything with a smaller barrel and less kick. I was looking at maybe the Remington Model Five compact but have heard that a CZ 452 might be better in the long run.

  15. OK doesn't charge sales tax on a car. Just the three percent excise tax.

OK has no income tax for residents living out of state who are military and the aforementioned $25 registration for all cars (including brand new) is quite nice.

But then you have Okie plates on your ride. On a plus side, I don't think they do front plates, so you can maintain your sleek front end look.

  16. I will not volunteer for a pay cut. I will not volunteer for scaling back any benefits. Because our political leaders don't have the guts to cut everywhere else. They're too busy emailing photos of their dicks to each other. And when they're not doing that, they're looking out for themselves.
