Why? Taking leave in conjunction with official travel shouldn't be a problem, just need to make sure the accounting/expensing is done right. Don't receive per diem for leave days, pay for your rental car on leave days, and pay any additional cost on airfare incurred by the delayed return. Easy.

During my younger days while stationed in Alaska, Leave in conjunction with a TDY, was invaluable when headed to the lower 48 for the Sim. Having the Leave approved, and then visiting CTO office to tailor my ticket was pretty painless. Just make sure your amended travel wasn’t more expensive than original cost.

  2. Well, 5 year window/end of BPZ is AF Amn/NCO Official - https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2019/12/09/air-force-to-drop-below-the-zone-promotions-for-officers/
Any good RUMINT on 07-08 boards during the transition?

If you’ve seen the stats, one of the discriminators for people making General was being Below the Zone to O-5 and O-6. I’m curious how this works “upstream”.

Hopefully this whole shift is a change for the better...

the old system helped keep promotion rates per AFSC all within the same level.

this new system will allow for tailoring of increasing or decreasing promotion rates depending on need/retirements.

to me, this is the answer to pilot retention in the promotion system.  If we are truly low on pilots, then why would their promotion rate be the same?  It makes little sense.   This is a step in the right direction.

I absolutely agree with you that the Air Force SHOULD promote more pilots, but I’m not holding my breath that they actually will implement an effective plan in a way it would actually help out the problem.

    From the article:

Kelly said that the “overall promotion board process for officers will remain the same. “We don’t want to change that at all, and we’re not changing it, But instead of competing against airmen from some 40 other Air Force specialty codes, Kelly said, “officers will be competing against a much smaller cohort of officers that are in jobs closer to their own.”

To me, that doesn’t sound like they’re looking to just promote all the pilots...

  4. The real proof of the pudding will be if the promotion rates for each category are tailored to the needs and missions of the af.

I don’t really care who’s on the operator board if the promotion rate is 90+%.

I’m afraid that this won’t be the case; unless they distribute more DP’s to the Ops group, then this “new system”will be what we have now. It almost seems like it could be worse, as the only guys meeting the board are all operators, but no one else records to establish the promotion record “cut line”. The devil will be in the details...
  5. The Sunnis and Shiites have been fighting each other for 1500 years; toss the Kurds into the mix and it’s a huge religious shit sandwich. As Americans if we continue to interject ourselves into those fights, we’ll be there forever. We kicked a hornets nest with the poor way we handled the Iraq Invasion and aftermath. Personally I think we need to leave the entire region, but we’ve invested so much money I don’t know if the military leadership will accept anything besides indefinite occupation.

  6. This is the same “outrage” that erupted over the Aircrew MAGA morale patches. It’s civilian reporters who don’t understand how the military operates. I do feel for the GS-13 who’s planning those TACC missions, they’re about to get a lot of unnecessary scrutiny.

I don't drink.  For whatever the state says is illegal.  I can't believe this this position is so controversial.

You put lives at risk when you drive drunk, buzzed, or high.  Period.

I’m not disagreeing that a DUI isn't a poor choice that endangers others; what I’m saying is that Commanders should evaluate each individual situation and determine the appropriate level of punishment. But to start the conversation with, regardless of circumstances your out of my unit is shitty leadership. And an O6 should obviously be held to a higher standard than an E3 or O2.

Let’s be real folks, we will never eliminate alcohol related events, it’s a legal intoxicate and people will always misuse it.

One mistake is a horrible way to lead. Allowing people to continue to progress in our AF at a time when getting a DUI is so clearly understood as to be wrong and dangerous... That’s not a mistake. That’s a crime. It doesn’t matter how stupid anyone things the BAC is, or how it’s unfairly low. Unsure how that is still questioned.

You literally contradict yourself...One mistake is terrible, unless you get a DUI, then off with your head “in my unit”.

I understand everyone has their own personal experiences which drive their world view; and it seems like DUI is yours. During my time in the AF, I’ve known people that did stupid shit as a LT, but we’re able to have fantastic careers because their leadership didn’t end it before it really began. Personally I’ve never thought the “hammer” style leaders create a healthy work environment, just one based on fear.

  9. So for everyone saying there are ways to beat this, and how easy it is I’m curious. Are you saying a member should then be reinstated because they got off on a technicality? Maybe I’m misreading the trending comments, but I don’t want any idiot who will drive drunk in the AF. I don’t care if they beat it on a technicality. I would have zero mercy on a dude that hit my kid while DUI. A DUI that doesn’t result in an accident is just somebody being more lucky than they deserve. There is the whole “Integrity First” thing that we should all subscribe to. Again, If I’ve misread the situation, press.

So are you advocating for the “one mistake Air Force”. People make extremely poor decisions, but can learn from them. To equate someone who drives drink, to hitting a child while under the influence are two massively different circumstances. I’m not an advocate for burning people at the stake, but that’s just me.

Just to ensure we are all talking about the same thing, the question seemed to be if it was possible to both be non-selected for promotion in you IPZ year and at the same time being forced out before your first 1APZ board??

That was my question. I just reengaged with my friend, it seems that in their hasty review of the non-selection paperwork they made some poor assumptions about what it meant. I also did some digging into the AFI, and it looks like continuation becomes a player after your 1APZ.

Used to be: talk to autumn foley, AFPC/DP

    Edit: that’s active duty

There is a form you submit as “justification” why you should meet an SSB. Autumn Foley helped me as an Active Duty member. The goal is to find anything that you can, to get yourself another look.

  12. If you’ve had limited work interaction with the Civilian Force of the DOD, then it can be a bit of a culture shock. Ask most of them and they know a “blue suiter” will be gone in two years, that’s good or bad. If you work at the Pentagon I’m sure the turnover is greater than that. Try this leaders, treat people like you would like to be treated. Screaming at people, in my opinion, is an ineffective technique.

The sheer ignorance, stupidity and self righteousness of the general public at large has me at a complete loss for words.

I read the comments and I think what it shows is the civilian population complete lack of understanding of the US armed forces culture. This is not an indictment on them, just they have no clue on what we do or who we are. Every military aviator saw the MAGA patch and thought “that’s funny”. They see it as something entirely different, as they have no idea what a morale patch is.
