  1. I'm going to jump on the rare and beautiful XB-70 Valkyrie. A Bit of a sad story, it was a research craft designed to fly high and fast (over Mach 3 at 70,000 feet). Only two were built, and one was lost when the F-104 chase plane rolled over the vertical stabs and snapped them off. You can read the whole story here.

The last one is at WPAFB, in the USAF Museum. It is quite a sight to behold in person.

  2. Thanks for the advice M2 and pawnman. I'll def be writing up a lease and whatnot... and no, I wouldn't hold anyone against the lease for a legit military reason, or any reason I guess as long as I had enough notification in advance. My buddy doesn't want to have to sign the lease, keeps claiming that he's good for it. I know he is, but still... you never know. Just interested in suggestions from people who have BTDT.... didn't know about the capital gains tax stuff, I'll be sure to look into it.

Tell your buddy tough luck. You're only trying to protect yourself. If he's that against it, and he's really a good friend, get his input on writing up the lease.

  3. You could talk to legal. I would just type up a lease agreement in Word, print it out, and have everyone sign it, just in case. It probably won't be a problem, but you never know. As for a dude going helos, you wouldn't hold him to the agreement if he's moving out, right? Just find yourself a new roommate. Happens all the time.

  4. Citizen makes some really nice watches for decent prices. I'm not sure about online sales, though.

Helzberg carries them, and you can find a Helzberg at any mall. I love my Skyhawk with the Eco-Drive.

  5. Low scores for mission planning. Excellent trying to avoid the public eye through the use of "pay-at-the-pump" and diapers, but when you get to your intended victim's house, don't pepper-spray her through a cracked window...wait quietly in the bedroom closet, take her by suprise and overpower her.

Jeez, don't they teach these astronauts anything?

We all thought this story was quite hilarious when it was first reported. I'm at Pensacola NAS, and Nowack was a VT-10 "Wildcat" back in the day. The instructors went so far as to type a grade sheet for this "event".

  6. Definitely wear the flight suit, take extra socks, and pack the minimum amount you can. You'll already be hauling all the stuff they issue you, don't make it more difficult by adding weight. The thick blousing straps with velcro are super useful, and take some extra 550 cord, you can use it for everything.

  7. Here's a dumb question: These medals are based on number of missions, not number of hours? So if you have, say, a BUFF or BONE crew that burns circles in the sky 10 hours at a go, you'd have 200 hours to get a medal. If you have something else that only goes up for, say, and hour at a time, he'd have 20 hours for the same medal.

Is there any adjustment for the length of mission is what I'm asking, I guess. Not that it really matters, just curious.

  8. As a LT, I'm thinking about telling a CMSgt to do pushups for taking the last Mt. Dew out of the snack bar just to get this thread back on it's original topic.

Looking to be a terminal 1Lt, are we?

  9. Christian Bale is a great actor, and so is Steve Zahn (often overlooked because he takes so many zany side-kick roles).

The movie is based on DIETER DENGLER.

What would be really cool is a movie about Bravo-20, the British SAS team that walked into Iraq from Syria...it would be pretty depressing though, only had one survivor after they were compromised by a kid herding goats.

  10. I think Brabus was getting at the different expectations that other services have for their 2Lt's. For example, my marine buddies waiting for pilot training were in charge of platoons and had the opportunity to lead troops. You rarely see those opportunities in the AF. While there are some good learning opportunities as a casual in the AF, snako is more prevalent and leadership opportunities are close to zero.

Can we get back to making fun of Academy guys?

    By all means.

I don't have a lot of experience, but in flight school, the folks that were the least helpful to the rest of the class were the Academy guys. They were consistently the whiners, the hoarders of knowledge, the guys who wouldn't pitch in and help out. And it was only the USAFA dudes, guys from the Naval Academy were some of the best guys to have in the class.

  11. The faggotry you displayed in that last post will make you a perfect fit for the Bone.

    *pun included*

There it is again...the sensitive, new-age stuff.

So tell me, had you been a 2Lt and had a TSgt ask if you were a cadet, what phrasing would you have used?

  12. I'm sure your smart ass reply didn't help either. People make mistakes. I don't think I need to jump all over a new non-rated Officer with the "I work for a living" speech every time because they accidentally salute me cause I'm in a flight suit.

"No, actually I'm an officer in the Air Force" is smart ass?

Is there a term for SNAP enlisted aircrew?

  13. Lt. Protection Association, from what I understand its just all the LT's in a squadron banding together to not get screwed over (to much at least) someone once used an analogy on this board that likened it to joining a gang once your in prison so you don't become someones girlfriend. Someone that knows more will likely chime in.

We had the JOPA, the "junior officer protection association". Except that on a Navy base, junior officer includes O-3.

  14. I think saluting other LTs is rather absurd, but almost all of the SNCOs I discuss this topic with get all eaten up about it. "If you don't have to salute a higher rank, WTF should I salute officers?" It's very interesting to see the different viewpoints. To us it's no big deal, but some of these guys get really pissed.

Yeah I always heard "bars don't salute bars," but I'll still salute 'em anyway.

That's how it works in the Navy. In Pensacola we don't havy any FAIP-types for navs, so all the instructors are O-3 and up. Obviously, if you're a student, you salute the O-3 instructors. But since I've gotten my wings, more than one Navy LT has told me not to salute..."We're both JO's, man."

  15. Like I said, I understand what the pilot was saying. In retrospect I wish I would have flown around and next time I will, but it is "legal," just not necessarily "right."

Excluding flying around, we exercised what I felt to be a lot of caution.

Anyways, if or when it becomes illegal, what good is calling up an FBO and yelling at Joe GA, when they should be talking to the higher ups.

Don't get me wrong, I have the upmost respect for anyone flying these jets :salut: , and I even hope to be flying one someday, but I weighed my options before going in and chose not to fly around, I guess I just didn't expect this to happen, and I figured a 172 wouldn't be as big of a threat to a B-1 as it is. Just have to chalk it up to experience...

FOD is FOD. Whether it's a bird or a 172, taking something through the intake makes the jet handle very poorly.

As for calling and bitching out your friend, I agree with you...he should have moved up the chain and bitched out the owner/manager for the FBO...or perhaps you personally.

  16. So I was on a xc the other day, and the direct route of my flight put me through an MOA. While enroute, I was notified by center that the MOA was active with two aircraft(turned out to be 2 B-1's). So I said copy that, we'll keep an eye out. For me to avoid this MOA it would have been about a 20-25 minute detour to the west or a 15 minute detour around a restricted area to the east, so I figure what the hell, these planes are the sh!t and I'm sure the pilots are profficient enough not to care about a littel POS 172 passing through(perfectly legal)

So I decide to keep flying through with eyes open. We see the two B-1's from quite a distance and had them in sight for a while. As we keep going, the B-1's ended up flying about 1000' below us and about 1 off our nose. So I thought Sweet, cuz it was! So anyways, we go on our merry way, chugging away in our 172. We finish our xc with no problems.

When I get to work at the FBO this morning, my buddy tells me that after I left the airport the other day, one of the B-1 pilots called the FBO and was pissed that I flew through the MOA. I guess he called the FSS and got my flight plan and tail number and traced it back to the FBO. He talked to my friend and in what I'm assuming typical fashion proceeded to explain the intracasies(sp.) of the B-1's systems and why flying through was a bad idea because we could have been toast. Ok, I said, I can understand that, but that doesn't really seem like a good reason to call and be, what my friend said, a "dick" about it.

What I'm gettin at is, if it is such a big deal, then why is it ok to fly through hot MOA's when the military pilots hate it? Before someone nips at my ass, I will say that I can understand what the pilot is saying and the speed, and complexity of the B-1 are pretty intense. But I am one little 172, and these guys are flying a B-1 with some of the most sophisticated avionics known to man. I'm assuming they saw me coming from quite a ways a way. I also understand that taking a detour is a safe option. But I just don't feel the pilot should have the right to call up the FSS and get my tail number and tell my buddy I was wrong when I was completely legal. Like I said, I understand what he is saying but I just figured they didn't mind the extra practice, and I was also assuming they had a pair of nuts...

    Thoughts, comments........

I haven't been operational yet, but...

I think the 172 is probably more stealthy that you realize. It's tiny, not a whole lot of metal, and it's speed is very low, so a notch filter could dimsiss it as "noise".

Not only that, but I imagine the B-1 guys felt a little differently about "extra practice" if it means cutting of the target leg of their low-level to avoid you.

I don't know why it's legal to fly through a hot MOA. I think it's pretty dumb, myself. I wouldn't do it, and I think you should probably exercise some caution instead of doing it again.

  17. Man, I wish I could volunteer and get my foot in at AFSOC. All my closest buds are in AFSOC and they are loving it. Sure, they are deployed a lot, but they say the gratification is worth it. Nope, I am stuck as an "ACC asset"; hence I'll probably go from RTU straight to a Pred.

Maybe I'll Palace Chase to the Army Guard and fly Apaches.

Lord forbid the AF take volunteers instead of non-voling other people.

Hopefully this will all be done by the time I get out of the RTU.
