  1. Loading bombs?? Relative safety???!!!

There's a lot of problems I could have in an airplane that I'd be more than happy to deal with: just don't make me handle bombs.

I'm raising a toast to your dad. Anyone that handles high explosives day in and day out is certainly earning their pay! Cheers.

Like I said, REALATIVE safety. As far as I know, no one took a shot at him in his entire 23-year career, although we WERE at Rammstein when Bader Meinhoff (sp?) set off that bomb. I was only months old.

He did have a good story about hearing a rolling noise, and looking up to see one of the bombs rolling down the ramp towards him. And another about the idle airman who was spinning the fuse on the back while escorting the bombs out to the plane.

  2. The F-150 was good, although it would be even more interesting to see an aircraft try to take OFF with a truck trying to stop it.

    Now that would sell.

Indeed. I wouldn't think there'd be that much resistance to stopping once the engines are at idle.

  3. We should start raising money for his defense fund.

I second HD, if I ever meet him in person, he won't have to buy his own drinks all night. My dad served proudly in Vietnam, not on the frontlines or in the air, but loading up bombs on B-52s from the relative safety of Guam. I can honestly say that I may have reacted to her appearance the same way this guy did, to the detriment of my career, and I would have regarded it as worth it.

  4. Hotel put it well -- it is informal and kind of a family affair. One thing to note too, is that unfortunately the room is not packed with students from the junior classes showing support like it is at a AF UPT graduation. I remember packing it into the standing-room-only auditorium just for a track select or drop - let alone for an actual graduation at an AF base...

At AF bases there seems to be a bit more tradition and as a graduate, your whole week is a special one with a lot of ceremonial activities. BUT, that is about the only drawback to the Navy program that I wholeheartedly enjoyed!

From what I remember for Pensacola, the Navy doesn't exactly schedule time off for students to attend wingings. I was flying, simming, or in class for most of them.

  5. There is no policy that says you have to wait. Timely processing of pay entitlements is a PERS/PAY Council hot topic. You should be able to get the FSA started after completing the FSA form and make the certification you are married and have dependents and they are not with you. Also provide a copy of the orders. If they still say no, ask them to produce a regulation quote that says you can't. They won't find it.

One note though, you will also have to certify there were no changes to your marital/dependent situation once you do arrive your perm. duty station.

I was told it was a limitation of the system. Since I'm in a PCS status, there are things they can't adjust with my pay.

I'd take you advice, but frankly, the $250 a month won't make that much difference to our financial situation vs getting it lump sum when I report to Dyess, and I'm not sure I'm willing to go through the life-draining experience of arguing the point with finance until they agree with you.

  6. Yes, he was all ready a JAG officer who decided to go to SUPT.

The biggest thing to realize here is that JAG officers are not LINE officers -- they are an entirely different portion of the officer corps. So, this guy I knew had to petition to leave the JAG corps and become a line officer in order to go to pilot training. It's not a simple process, and not one that just happens overnight.

I doubt the story that the Vette Forum guy is peddling...but the people who think this type of career change is only in the mind of Harmon J Rabb are wrong -- I know a lawyer-turned-F-16 pilot.

But I'm guessing he didn't do a tour in the Viper and go back to being a lawyer.

  7. Had a great experience today...I signed in, and I was 1st in line, according to their computer sign-in system. Still had to wait 20 minutes to see someone. Then I was told since I'm TDY-enroute, the family separation allowance I'm supposed to be getting while TDY will be paid when I report to Dyess...So the money I'm being paid for being separated from my family will be given to me, but not until I'm REUNITED with my family? What's wrong with this logic? And yes, I had applied for it before leaving my last base.

  8. I, too, read the book, but I don't have any extra inside information. From the book alone, it seems like there was a real lack of cohesion and no unity of command, and that created all manner of problems. It wasn't just the Air Force that had trouble getting integrated...they cut the local guy, Zia Lodin, out entirely, and they landed three helicopters on the exact same hornet's nest of bad guys. The C2 was almost non-existent from the start of the mission.

  9. I thought the movie was pretty good. Could have used a little more coherence, I thought...there seemed to be a lot of jumping from scene to scene, with little holding them together.

  10. In that same billeting AFI, it talks about aircrew rooms and crew integrity - another issue that I seem to have to fight with billeting every time:

2.2.7. Transient Aircrew Lodging. Lodging provides a private room/private bath to transient aircrew

members 0-1 and above (accommodations may include a shared kitchen and/or living area). For

enlisted transient aircrew members, lodging provides a private room and a private or shared bath. Aircrew

members are defined as anyone on the flight crew order. Ensure gender is considered when

assigned lodging to aircrews. Crew integrity will be maintained--all members of the same crew will be

housed together, either all on base or all off base. If a crew is divided into multiple buildings on base,

no more than two stops will be required to pick up all crew members. NOTE: Exceptions may be

    made during contingencies.

2.2.7.1. When construction or maintenance in the vicinity of aircrew quarters could interrupt crew

rest, general managers will not assign aircrew members to buildings in the area.

2.2.7.2. Lodging may assign other TDY personnel to transient aircrew accommodations if not

required for aircrews and other on-base lodging is not available. When assigning other TDY personnel

to aircrew accommodations, advise them of the varied aircrew members sleeping hours,

and ask them to refrain from making any noise or disturbance that could interrupt crew rest.

2.2.7.3. Lodging will maintain aircrew integrity by housing the entire aircrew either on base or off

base. If housed on base, lodging will house them as close together as possible. If lodged off base,

lodging will house the aircrew in one commercial establishment.

2.2.7.4. The installation commander or the aircraft commander may waive aircrew lodging

requirements on a temporary basis for reasons of military necessity.

2.2.7.5. Transient aircrews may use AF Form 2282, Statement of Adverse Affect--Use of Government

Facilities, at Air Force, Army, Navy, or Marine Corps installations when available temporary

lodging does not meet Air Force standards for aircrews. When adequate government

lodging is available, but does not meet special mission support requirements or crew integrity

requirements, or the host installation commander has determined that the requirements cannot be

    24 AFI34-246 17 MAY 2001

supported, the members may obtain commercial accommodations at their own expense. In these

cases, the general manager will not issue NA numbers. The TDY member is responsible for filing

the AF Form 2282 at their permanent duty base.

My stepfather pulled that card more than once with an AWACS bird. "We're on alert, you have to lodge the whole crew together...we'll be staying at the Marriott downtown, since you don't have enough rooms for the whole crew here at the base."

  11. If you right click on it and do view image it goes to sr71.net and shows another picture of the XB-70. It looks like the webmaster of the hosting site set it up to show a different image if you are not viewing the picture from his site (to deter including it in forums, etc and using his bandwidth) like airliners.net tends to do.

Exactly what happened. I even previewed the post and it showed the plane correctly. I'm on it.

  12. Looks like a good movie, what with the rest of the crop out there we could use one. I did notice a little flub on one of the movie posters. The image of the pilot reaching up towards a couple of helicopters... the top one looks an awful lot like a Blackhawk,

You haven't heard about the time machine Kennedy had built as part of the space program?
