  1. I'll echo the LogbookPro comments and add:

-I use the v2.0 app on my iPad and love it. Very easy to use and synchronizes online with your home PC logbook automatically each time you open the app. I believe the iPhone/iPad apps are identical.

-The PC version also has a function that allows you to automatically calculate a conversion for your military time when filling out airline applications.

-I've also heard good things about a program called LogTenPro, though I haven't used it. That program also has an app for the iPhone.

  2. What is the cost of that app? And I thought the GPS used some kind of cell signal, but I guess not? So it works at altitude? That is pretty sweet.

The app is free, but you have to buy a subscription for all the goodies. There is a free trial period included for a month, I think, so you can try it out without shelling out the big bucks. Subscription costs $25 for 3 months or $75 for a year. The GPS in the iPad is lousy, but it doesn't need a cell signal to work. If you have the wi-fi only model, there is no GPS chip in it, from what I understand. I have the 3G model, but went ahead and bought a separate battery powered bluetooth GPS receiver that provides a much better signal to the app. Fortunately, the receiver works with all GPS enabled apps on any Apple device (or even a laptop with bluetooth), so I can use it for more than just flying.

  3. I have the ForeFlight app on my iPad and iPhone along with one of the Bluetooth GPS receivers the app supports. Both are a little pricey, but the upside is huge. I just throw the GPS receiver up on the glareshield and get a moving map display overlaid on high, low, and sectional charts as well as all the approach plates, SIDs, and STARs for the whole country. I haven't done it, but if you pay a little extra, you get your position overlaid on the IAPs. Overlay on other charts comes with the regular subscription. The app doesn't give you any charts for flying international, but it sure is sweet for flying in the States.

  4. We had our own wireless setup in our ops building but it was slow as molasses. Anything like Skype was out of the question. We're in a new building now, and no wireless has been set up yet. The ISP for the dorms is IOGlobal. Major ripoff, but I'm willing to pay for it in order to see my family.<br>

Also, apparently they upgraded the morale wireless around here in various places. Supposedly they added more bandwidth, but I can't tell the difference.

AFCENT/CC directive to provide a "robust morale network"

Robust my ass. At least it's something, though.

  5. I'm using the wired internet in the new buildings right now. Still the same sketchy setup, as Robo said, but it works fine. I Skype on it all the time, though if you want to do video you'll need to shell out the $100/mo for the top plan. I have my iPad registered for the wireless hotspots, but it's less reliable and a lot slower than the wired setup. My advice: bring a laptop to use in your room.

  6. What you actually need is proof of ownership of the account you're using, like an LES showing your direct deposit information, or a check, or a print out of your bank statement.

I didn't even need proof of ownership at BAF. I just turned in the form with my bank info filled in and they gave me a card.

  7. I'm a big fan of the ECC. No wad of cash, no pogs, no checks, no trip to finance if you have an unanticipated large expense. I had to buy new boots a week after I landed at BAF because my old ones decided to blow out at the seams. I just walked over to the BX, picked out the boots I wanted and noted the price, walked the 30 feet to the ECC terminal and loaded exactly that amount on my card, paid for them, and was on my way. Easy.

  8. Sex Toy Rigged With Bomb Is World's Worst Christmas Present

In a nutshell, Lester's alleged plan was to trick his ex into opening a box labeled "Christmas presents" that he'd left behind when he was evicted from their apartment. Inside the box was a sex toy that had "been modified with gun powder and buck shot, which were connected to a trigger inside the battery port." Lester apparently believed that he could pull some kind of "trigger" and by doing so "blow them up." Huh.

    Is that Kenny Powers?

  9. Yet more evidence of why it was probably a mistake to take "Fighter" off of that patch.

I can't argue that point. I will say, though, the intent to bring tactical expertise to the masses was good, but the execution left a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, some of the non-CAF herbivores haven't made the transition very well because they regarded the school as a career enhancing activity.

The problem is, leaders in our community these days pound this idea into our skulls from day one. To them, career is secondary to the mission. This seems to be the biggest problem we have to overcome.

There was also some foolish resistance to inputs from Nellis to the herbivores (some were cool, like Moondog, but those at the top were fucking nuts).

Thankfully, Moondog has continued to buck the trend of surgically removing one's common sense upon reaching O-6. It's a shame guys like him are such a rarity in our community.

BL: being selected for weapons school has nothing to do with advancing a career and graduating from weapons school has nothing to do with a person's ability to command.

Amen. I wish those ideas were universally accepted.

    Edit: Clarity

  10. A person does not become a weapons officer for career progression.

I hope that's still true for the pointy-nosed dudes, but I can tell you it most certainly is not in other communities. One policy from a few years ago even went so far as to say officers would not be selected for future CC or DO positions without a patch.

  11. Does the policy of not letting ANG/AFRC people deploy with the AD apply to just KC-135 folks? We are getting conflicting rumors here in the 130 community.

As I understand it, the MPA days are gone for all airframes. You'll get your AEF bucket to fill, or you can whore yourself out to other ARC units to help fill their buckets, but you won't be filling any AD spots any time soon.

  12. Point an iPhone at the Sky, See Augmented Reality Info as Planes Fly By

    500x_planefinderar.jpg

Plane Finder AR adds a layer of augmented reality to its previous (and free) Plane Finder app, now charging $3 for the privilege of seeing the flight number, speed, destination and other such details of overhead planes. The same developer is making a name for itself in transportation apps, with its Airline Finder acting as a guide to all the various airline planes in the world; Ship Finder showing real-time movements of our aquatic vessels; and the real-time Plane Finder and Plane Finder Free apps, which only has $5 and detailed aircraft information on each plane between them.

This latest one, Plane Finder AR, displays augmented reality information on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4's screens, when pointed at a plane in the sky. Little thumbnails appear, highlighting the flight number, speed, altitude, last port of call and destination, and how far away it is from you.

It works by picking up the ADS-B data from the planes, which is why not every plane the iPhone is pointed at has information to be displayed

    From the iTunes Store:

    Plane Finder AR

    Description

Wondered where that plane up above is going - Wonder no more!

Plane Finder AR - Point the camera at a plane and you'll see the flight number, aircraft registration, speed, altitude and how far away it is!

Amaze your friends with your newfound knowledge!

Contrails will no longer be a mystery!

Plane Finder AR blends the data from our Plane Finder virtual radar apps with the Augmented Reality capabilities of the iPhone to show you what is flying overhead.

The app is fun to use and is very dynamic. It will work in all areas for which we have coverage.

Please check our web map at http://www.planefinder.net or ask a question via my.pinkfroot.com to make sure we cover your area.

We are adding feeds all of the time so it's always worth checking back in regularly.

Plane Finder AR works by picking up ADS-B plane feeds used by all commercial planes to transmit their name, position, destination and lots more.

Check out our Plane Finder and Plane Finder HD apps for an amazing radar like view of the air traffic across the world.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Plane Finder AR and Plane Finder?

Plane Finder AR is our augmented reality app that shares the data available in Plane Finder- our original iPhone App. Plane Finder (and Plane Finder HD) provide a near real time virtual radar view of flight from across the world and include a great deal more detail that Plane Finder AR. All Plane Finder apps share common ADS-B data.

Why can't I see all planes?

Aircraft must be carrying ADS-B equipment and we must have a feed in the area. (In the US airlines have been slow to adopt the technology but usage is continuing to rise).

What if my area isn't covered?

We are always on the lookout for more data feeds. Check back regularly to see if we have added your area.

If I have an SBS, RadarBox, Plane Gadget or Aurora ADS-B receiver can I share my data for use with Plane Finder AR?

Yes. Please contact support@pinkfroot.com and we can assist.

Can I use Plane Finder AR for navigational purposes?

Definitely not. Plane Finder must not be used for navigational purposes under any circumstances
