  1. I've never seen the old school weapons school grad patches before now. I just have to say thanks to the USAF historian for preventing the exclusion of others because the space weapons school patch wasn't as cool as the others. BRAVO!!!

Dear god, we really do have a reading comprehension problem on here.

AGAIN, those were not grad patches. They were division patches for the folks that taught in that specialty at the school, an attempt to generate morale.

The graduate patch is THE SAME AS IT EVER WAS....THERE WAS NEVER A PROPOSAL TO CHANGE IT!

  2. I think Rapier is creating much ado about nothing. If you actually read the article, it specifically states that this is the new "Weapons School Group" patch. Since the USAFWS is functionally a "Group" under the 57Wing, this appears to me to simply be a new patch for the Group.

I highly doubt that the Weapons School Graduate patch will change.

There's way too much momentum and a veritable constellation of stars with that bit of legacy on their shoulder; it ain't changing any time soon.

    Shack

It is just an updated group patch to reflect all the current WICs, they do this every few years.

The grad patch remains the same.

While I realize the meaning behind the "patch" will remain the same but what is the Air Force's incessant need to reinvent itself? I could understand if the "patch" had a giant Eagle in the middle of it but the old one applied to all the new MWS without having to actually have the airframe on there.

I'm not sure of the history of the "current" i.e. now former patch but I know I've seen pictures (In Steve Davies' "Red Eagles" which date from the late 1970's with a version of that patch. The pictures are slightly blurry but it looks like the patch now with an aircraft superimposed.

    Again, confusion on your part. The Weapons School is the equivalent of a group with for the most part each WIC having it's own squadron. Prior to 2000 each WIC was a division which led to a division or MWS patch that instructors wore on the right shoulder and the standard graduate patch on the left shoulder. Examples below;

  3. I didn't bother searching the forum before making this thread because I'm pretty positive it hasn't been discussed on here before. Here is a hypothetical for the forum. Lets say you were bored and happened to be browsing an adult website or two in your spare time and came across(sts) a picture that was of a friend of yours. And in this picture your friend is wearing her cheerleading outfit from college and the picture is clearly lifted from an Athletic Association archive or something similar. Sadly said picture does not link to any actual videos or images of the person in question but that is no surprise because, in theory, knowing this girl you would know that such videos probably aren't spread across the internet. And maybe this girl graduated a 2 years ago and you haven't really spoken to herl in about a year or more. Should she be informed or is she better off living life blissfully ignorant that her picture is right next to a topless black chick on a random website on the internet?

    Ignorance is bliss...got a link?

  4. Lots of mentoring as a kid and some as a cadet, mostly by active duty guys that were friends of my old man.

My very first boss was a Lt Col Navigator who should have been a general officer...phenomenal leader and a great mentor...after him, ZERO mentoring until I was a captain and I met Rainman. The guy literally put him giant claw on my shoulder and set me straight. Say what you want about his gruff persona, but he genuinely gives a damn.

I've made it a point to mentor folks both in my current squadron and outside and I encourage everyone of you to mentor folks below you. There is no downside and you are paying it forward for the next generation.

There is a dude on this board that I met when he was 13 and I did my best to help him through the years. I was at his college graduation and his graduation from UPT. There are numerous folks on this board that I have tried to help. Several of you have been over to the house to have dinner with my family,hell...Rocker and Murph even got to see my kid puke in a Mexican restaurant.

  5. Last night while atop a 5 story building over looking downtown Wilmington, NC, I was outside holding the lady (because its December and its cold as fu(king Alaska...) We were checking out the view and looking at the stars... :rainbow: I know...

Now...DT Wilmington is about 10 miles from the airport, so there is lots of traffic that fly right over, but ILM is class D and the tower closes at 11. this was 1:52 a.m. we're looking up an from the NW to SE fast as hell was a triangular uh...thing...with an orange glow on each corner. as it passed over, it disappeared. No sound at all.

Yes. I had been drinking. So had she, but that was a sobering experience for sure.

NOTE: I have never believed in UFO stories before. I thought everyone was a total NUTJOB.

    I'm going to the DOC.

    -summers

I saw something mesmerizing myself just a few seconds ago.

It started out as two perfectly shaped round objects. They were covered by two hand-like mechanisms that were gently caressing the round objects in a synchronized clockwise and and counter clockwise movement.

Obviously a sign of higher intelligence.

  6. Ladies,

The past few months have seen some heated discussions from both sides of the aisle and tomorrow night we will likely know who the next president of the United States is.

Let this serve as a reminder that after tomorrow, regardless of your opinion of the person elected, there are regulations that govern the military and comments on the Commander in Chief.

As military members we give up some of our rights in order to serve as protectors of this great nation.

I urge all of you to become A-Political tomorrow night and remember the oath you swore to protect and defend the constitution.

  7. Can we not turn this into a picture thread? I think that posting mug shots taken whilst wearing said blues should be mandatory.

Not so fast Steve...As a civ you are somewhat immune so if you want our picture posted in blues I think we need one of you in full Queen's Guard regalia.

  8. Not to rain on everybody's parade, but I would not recommend buying in Navarre unless you financially cannot afford to buy in a few of the other areas. I have lived in numerous parts across the southern US and was sick of trailer parks and dollar stores when I moved here; that was my impression of Navarre. It reminded me more of lower Alabama than a vacation paradise that I was expecting. I would look into areas like Destin, Bluewater Bay (Niceville) and possibly parts of Okaloosa Isl. In addition, many dudes are buying right outside of Hurlburt (I believe it is classified as Mary Esther) in a small new home subdivision- it's not too bad. You are going to pay more to live out of Navarre, but you may enjoy things like golf courses, marinas, restaurants, nightlife, proximity to kick ass beaches (Destin) and better resale. Like the other post said, they can keep on building in Navarre. That is true, and that does not help resale value. Your land will be worth far less than your house. Not to mention, I have heard of a lack of HOA's. Many people hate them; I hate when my neighbor parks in his fu*&ing yard! HOA's can be a benefit and I personally like them.

In addition, while Navarre schools may be better than many in the southern US, the public schools in Bluewater and Destin parallel any private school I have seen and are in the top 3 schools for Fl year after year (for those reading with kids). JSF will be finding its way to Eglin in the coming years and this will boost values and demand even more (just watch out for ValP). Talk to some realtors in each area (rec. Bob Booker with C21 in Niceville- awesome dude with REAL experience) and get their opinions before you buy. Believe it or not, the commute from other areas is not as bad as you might think. You can get from the Mid-Bay bridge (between Destin and Bluewater Bay) to Hurlburt in 35 mintues and day of the week all the time. Ask folks in Navarre how long it takes to get home in rush hour or on Friday afternoon. Furthermore, ask how many fatal car/ MX wrecks they have seen on 98.

The other post regarding Militarybyowner.com is spot on. That site is awesome- I have used it on both sides of rentals and it is great!

    What???

How long have you been here? With a name like "Vprdrvr69", I am guessing not very long...

It sounds like your realtor has given you a line of crap. Navarre still has the best value and lowest cost per square foot in the tri-county area.

Through 13 years of PCS' I have spent a lot of time in Navarre and love it. In my opinion, the only advantage Destin has is the night life...But I don't need to go to a bar everynight to find happiness. i would much rather hang with the family and get liquored up.

As for beaches, have you even been to Navarre beach?.. How about Juanna's?

I would purposely avoid many of the areas you mentioned unless I wanted an older house form the 70's with enough closet space to hang three things.

As for schools...what fact do you base that on? Holley Navarre Middle School has the highest ranking in the state.

And finally with regard to traffic, I live on the far west side of Navarre and it takes me 30 minutes to get home at peak traffic time. I get to work in 25 minutes int he morning. Destin traffic is an absolute mess.

I don't know which orifice you pulled your analysis from, but it was plain wrong.

  9. Loss,

The USAF will most certainly NOT allow you to stop flying. Think of it from their perspective, they have invested millions in you, they have a ten year contract with you, they have already rerouted the careers of hundreds of other pilots to pay bills to DOD and AFSOC, and we simply don't have enough younger pilots right now. I heard a staggering figure the other day, the USAF bill to the UAV community over the next three years is something like 1100 pilots. We make fewer than 1000 per year, something has to give and until it does, every available body is going to be thrown into the fight. My guess is that if you go to your leadership they will at least listen to what you have to say, but you may be putting a ginormous UAS target right on the front of your nugget. That is not meant as a comment against the UAS community, there are some really good dudes over there eating a shit sandwich for the team, and it might not be a bad thing in your case.

All of that being said, life is too short to be miserable. Others mentioned the chaplain which is an excellent source, even if you don't have a strong faith. USAF chaplains are trained counselors and they can help you work through a problem.

Whatever you do I urged you to step away from the situation for a few days and think about it before you talk to leadership or start to cross a bridge you can't recross. This weekend is a long one for most of us and it may be a good opportunity to go away and do something unrelated to the military and flying, clear your skull and decompress a bit.

Finally, I understand you are trying to keep it somewhat generic so as to protect your identity here. Your specific situation may have other contributing factors that you can't or don't want to share on the internet. If that is the case, feel free to PM me and I will be glad to talk details.

Whatever happens, I wish you the best.

  10. Has anyone heard anything about a P-3 almost crashing at Whidbey this summer? I saw pictures of its wing, complete with 45 popped rivets and the wing spar torn like paper.

I don't know too many details, but they said that plane was done.

The US Naval Safety Center issued the following release for the incident -

Mishap Date: 07/22/2008 Severity: A FM Time: 13:00 Evt Ser: 69798

    Reference: VP-1 221300JUL08

Acft: P003C Count: Y Destroyed: N Major Command: COMNAVAIRPAC

    Custodian: VP-1 Fatalities: 0 Buno: 161331

    Location: WHIDBEY ISLAND

Summary: AIRCRAFT OVERSTRESSED DEPARTED CONTROLLED FLIGHT.

Tuesday, 22 Jul 2008, a P-3 Orion from VP-1 was flying an approach to NAS Whidbey Island with the #1 engine in a simulated failure mode. At 160 KIAS, the #2 engine started to surge, so they had to chop power to it. As all this was happening, they were still decelerating, so by the time they added power to #3 and #4, they were at 122 knots, and in the dry terms of investigators, “departed controlled flight.” The P-3 did FIVE rotations in a flat spin, dropping 5500 feet, finally recovering between 50 and 200 feet AGL (above ground level), pulling a whopping 7 positive G’s on the airframe after sustaining 2.4 negative G’s in the spin. The rolling pullout burst 45 rivets on one wing, physically RIPPED the main spar, and bent the entire airframe… the crew could see INSIDE the fuel tanks of the wing.

The P-3C that almost went into Puget Sound waters was from NAS Whidbey. It was a CPW-10 aircraft being operated by VP-1. Squadrons don’t own aircraft any more. The P-3 fleet has so deteriorated because of under-funding and over-use that there are less than 100 still flyable*. The P-3s belong to the wing and are “lent to the squadrons on an as-needed” basis.

The mission was a NATOPS pilot check, with a CPW-10 pilot (LT) aboard, a VP-1 LT and LTJG, plus VP-1 aircrewmen that included two flight engineers. The bird was landed back at NASW. Max damage was sustained by the aircraft, including almost tearing off a wing. Aircraft BuNo 161331.

At Whidbey, P-3C 161331 was doing a Functional Check Flight. They could see the inside of the fuel tanks when they landed. SDRS recorded the flaps being raised and the landing gear being cycled down and then back up. Aircraft released all the fuel in tank #3 when it appears that the seam between planks 3 and 4 split. Tank #4 also lost its fuel load when plank #1 separated from rest of the aircraft wing.

  11. Hey guys,

I've been reading here a while and I'm looking for a little help...

I'm currently waiting to start pilot training at Vance and before I got down here my aunt gave me some of my grandfathers old Army Air Corps things. Neither she nor my dad really know much about what he did but from what they do remember I know that he was flying transport over the Burma hump. My aunt thinks that he did some of his pilot training here but some of the pictures that she gave me also show him in Muskogee. I also have his ribbon rack and he has the Distinguished Flying Cross with a bronze oak leaf cluster.

Basically, I'm wondering if there is anyway to find out exactly what/where he flew and what it was he did to get the DFC. Is there any Vance or Air Force organization that would still have any history on him? My brother also got his SSN off of some paperwork we found hoping that that would lead us somewhere but we really don't know where to start looking.

I'm guessing that this is probably going to be pretty tough to run down but any advice on where I could possibly look would be appreciated!

Try the Dsitinguished Flying Cross Society website and see if he is listed.
