Why not? It seems like such a simple thing to give yourself another tool to fly a visual approach.

This is truly what I see as the great cultural difference between fighter pilots and heavy pilots.

That and an irrational avoidance of the word “head”.

Because it's pointless when flying the overhead.

Fun fact: the Navy flies night overheads.

When they forced us into green boots and tan shirts everyone was howling.  Now that we have the option to swap back to brown shirts and comfortable boots everyone is dragging their feet.  I feel like some of my fellow aircrew have stockholm syndrome.

Bring back black boots and shirts!

Yep. No hyperbole - the B model is at fault for the majority of design flaws. That’s a nearly universal belief amongst pilots of all services. Even worse is the USMC has no real operational need for the F-35 (it did need new aircraft, but there were better choices), and the primary role of USMC air is CAS; it’s no secret the F-35 is not the best choice for that mission set (assuming low threat stuff the USMC would actually find itself in while only having organic air available).

We should have built one model for AF/Navy (call it the C...DGAF about the A’s 9g capes) and the USMC should have purchased super hornets. We’d all be so much better off.

It probably wouldn't have been as bad were it not for the obsession of Marines = VTOL.  Have they ever actually used that capability in a forward-deployed environment? (Not the ship, but a place that requires landing and taking off where there are no runways on land).

During the ejection sequence the “transparency removal system”/det cord embedded in the canopy fires to create a hole for the seat to go through. As the Elgin pilot found out, apparently this sends shards of plexiglass and whatever metal coatings are on the canopy both inside and outside the jet. If you’re wearing the issued flight suit and vest option (instead of the flight jacket), it sounds like this metal ends up going through the sleeves into the pilot’s skin

Is this the result of the backwards-ass canopy and more fallout from the POS B model compromises?

It’s not an issue. The only difference between the viper and it is I loosen one shoulder strap...overblown “problem.” That’s not to say the entire canopy design/seat/ejection sequence isn’t retarded. Thanks again B Model.

Do you wear the jacket?  I guess the Eglin bubba didn't and now has shards permanently in his skin.

That didn’t take long. They usually last a couple posts before going straight to self-elimination.

I’m gonna give you some advice, take it or leave it. This was tame compared to how it is in the real flying community. If you get offended just because people call you out that maybe you aren’t as “desperate” an applicant as you would like to think, then you should either grow some thicker skin or quit now, because you aren’t going to make it.

That’s not me being a dick either. That’s just 100% honest truth. People here are willing to help but check yourself.

This.  Also, the internet is not as anonymous as some people think.  There are a ton of bros doing hiring on this board.  What do you think will happen when they put two and two together with a 31 year old in real estate with mediocre scores and a letter of rec from a lieutenant?

    Rule #1: Don't be a douche.

Yeah so I would wager you all voted for Hillary Clinton in the election cause you all sound like a bunch of whipped liberal leftists. If I knew any better than I would say you guys probably aren't even fighter pilots and pose as them on the internet to seem cool because you missed out on the dream. You all are a bunch of self entitled pricks who are extremely negative and extremely discouraging. Why would I even want to be your wingman? You all seem like God's gift to the world. Enjoy your lives! If you're living the dream then you certainly wouldn't be spending the enormous amounts of time on this website spreading horrible negativity and spend more time studying how to fly fighter jets better. I wish you all the best and I hope to never see you in real life, that would be a huge disappointment.

    Pipe down, snowflake.

Looks like there are hurt feelings on here. It's an opinion, I don't want to live in the south.

I'd rather fly fighters in the south than show up to airshows in the north saying, "I always wanted to be a fighter pilot, but..."

    Those are not real blondes.

    Break break---

I think its clear southwest is the pack leader when it comes to MLOA friendly ops. Some of the stuff I've been recently made privy to is straight up burger king. Good on 'em.

Also, I personally love the insta switch from some airline guys the second  they make a nickle more per credit hour than their mil gig. To quote an old ART buddy of mine : "you know, for the best job in the world, these mother----- sure spend a lot of time hiding here.." . I think peter gave Jesus a better treatment than some of these guys do their squadron pay people the day after that 2nd year longevity pay anniversary lol. I still remember the lost decade, so I'm naturally inclinded not to ballwalk around a job that kept people paid during a trough, but to each their own.

Would be less likely to ballwalk if the ARC could get a handle on paying people correctly and in a timely manner without having the member waste multiple days trying to get it unfucked. I know, I know.  Too much to ask.

I have yet to see a guard PILOT get involuntarily, individually mobilized to a 179/365...only Reserve pilots.  I'm not saying it hasn't happened or those days aren't coming, just that I haven't seen it yet in the ANG.  I think leadership is smart enough to grasp the reality of the mass exodus that would happen after the first one.  Either way, this is just another reason why I'll always recommend the Guard over the Reserves to all my buddies leaving AD.

I don't know of any personally, but I've heard of them from folks at A3.  The Guard actually ended up with more than the Reserves.

Why do you think they're not so great?  Do you believe that we would continue to have many of the contractual items that make our QOL so nice?  Tomorrow I get to rest in an actual bunk, rather than the 1st class seat right in front of the mid galley (banging carts/dishes) that the company fought hard for us to use.   On my next trip I'll get to enjoy using KCM to go to work.  I'm certain we'd lose many of our contractual flight duty period limitations.  Hell management applied for an exemption so they could block us up to 9+45 hours (2 pilot), until the union found the filling on the web.  It caught the company with their pants down and they quickly retracted it.  I'm also guessing that section 1 would be completely dismantled ASAP.

I'm all for helping the company run an efficient operation, but we're running pretty damn good and giving back Billions to shareholders.  IMHO this gig wouldn't be anywhere near as nice if our unions go away.  I have friends who have worked for non-union operators in this industry and it isn't pretty.  I'm guessing the UPS guys are extremely happy they have IPA.  Having done union work as well, I'm damn glad we have a union.  Glad to hear you're doing what you can to help as well.

I think it's a matter of strength of union and work rules.

You work for an airline with a contract that is decent and management / middle management / scheduling that doesn't openly hate you.

APA is not a union.  They're a widebody CA protection group. The work rules are protected only by FAR 117, beyond that, it's mostly a scheduling free for all or "not implemented yet" (after 6 years) or "IT issues" for stuff that would help the pilots.

From this perspective, I absolutely agree with Ratner on this. Without unions artificially propping up the weak sisters whose only accomplishment is to be hired first, the strong would thrive and the weak would be gone.  Some of the nonsensical language this group agreed to often makes me wonder if we'd be better off without any union at all.  Because when you call the company on their BS, the union's response is typically "we asked and they said no" or "fly it and we'll grieve it later" or "sorry but there's no language for that."

If we had a union that could actually stand up to the company (as opposed to being in bed with them as a flow-thru program to management positions), it might seem worth it.
