Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by Goblin,

Question for the masses: I'm an AD KC-135 guy and just got picked up for March as my 2nd assignment. Just wanted to get a feel for what to expect and see if anyone is out there or has experience there. I realize that its an associate unit and that can somewhat hurt career progress. If anyone has general info on the base, community, QOL, and places to live, it would be much appreciated. I'm a married guy w/no kids...wife will be looking to go to Loma Linda for school while we are there. Thanks! Goblin

What's up gents, I'm a Marine Cobra pilot and Captain looking a few years down the road. I'm a WTI graduate (our weapons school for the unfamiliar) and FAC(A)-I and I'll leave the Marine Corps with about 2,000 TT, ~1200 PIC, and ~5-600 NVG and two very uneventful MEU deployments under my belt. I've been playing around with the idea of guying Guard vis Marine Reserve and wanted to see if anyone here has had experience with former Marine or former Helo colleagues in a FW platform. I've worked with Jolly before and while they are absolute pros and represented the AF very well, my interest still lies in attack and strike if that's a possibility. Tracking that I'll have t…

Similar questions to what a Marine Osprey pilot asked a little while back. I am currently a Marine UH-1Y Pilot. I have enjoyed my time in the Marine Corps and Iove flying the Huey. However, my fleet time has been tough on my family. My initial commitment will be complete in 2023 but can accept orders to extend. I have experience as FAC/JTAC and did a tour with an infantry battalion and my next duty station will be an ANGLICO. I am interested in applying to one of the Air National Guard units that flies the A-10 while at my next duty station. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG wil…

Will be selecting jet platform shortly in the Marines and just thinking long term. Do ANG/AF reserve fighter units care about previous fighter platform much? Wrestling with putting F-35B or Hornets at the top of my selection sheet. Honestly, I think I may want to stay in the Marine Corps for 20, but just curious if I did make the jump if I'd be shooting myself in the foot not trying to get 35's. I would assume that in 8 years there will be many more reserve F-35A squadrons and they would prefer a dude that flew 35-B's. I've also assumed a lot of shit incorrectly in my life so I'm curious of the opinion of anyone in the know.

I am currently a Marine MV-22 Osprey Pilot. I love flying the Osprey and I love being a Marine. However the fleet has been tough on my wife and kids and I'm not sure if my family will be able to take another 13 years of this before I retire. My initial commitment will be complete in a couple of years and I am considering applying to one of the Air National Guard Unit at my home state which operate F-16 and C-130s. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG will look at my Tilt-Rotor time in regards to UPT. From what I can tell CV-22 pilots only fly the T-6 and UH-1 in flight training. However in t…

  7. I've seen different units advertise different maximums for TFCS--some say no more than 5 years and some say no more than 8 years. Does anyone know if there is one correct answer and what publication I could find it in? On a similar note, if anyone has ever successfully had a TFCS waiver approved, I would be grateful if someone could DM me the template. TIA

  8. Hey Folks - I've read through the majority of threads/posts on this topic; but I couldn't find any specific answers. Question: I work at a squadron that works 4 10hr days/week (Mondays off). I'm transitioning from an AGR job to a GS-13 Technician Job. As a technician, I'm going to attempt to maximize my pay when sitting alert by doing that on the weekends, so should I consider Mondays for all intents and purposes a weekend day? Any other tips/advice other Techs can offer for maximizing my yearly gross income and minimizing my taxable? After running the numbers, it looks like I'm going to be just about matching my AGR take-home pay (13-year Capt, 8 yrs DSG e…

This is a hypothetical, but wondering if anyone can shed light on it. If someone is medically retired from the Reserves, how does the rule set vary from AD? For instance, if someone is medically separated with 18 years service (for example) from AD, once all the wickets are worked through, they may be eligible for immediate retired pay at some multiplier based on their years of service and calculated disability. On the Reserves side, how would that work? Would they be eligible for some immediate retired pay, or would that wait until age 60? What if they’ve reached 20 years of AD time? (I’d assume immediate in that case) Like I said, this is all a hypothetica…

As I plan my next move, I came up with a question I am having a hard time getting an answer for. The guard unit I am considering joining is doing all deployments via Mob Letters, thus getting the Mob protection and whatnot. I will be a complete free agent with zero commitment to the unit. I plan on sticking around for a while, but I know eventually I am going to want to give up the job forever. Once you get put on a Mob Letter are you effectively blocked from separating/retiring until after the deployment? I had heard rumors AFRC was trying to make it harder to separate if you were tasked with a deployment but haven’t heard anything about the Guard. Thanks!

I'm thinking about putting in my palace chase application, but my ISR doesn't have any info on the new Montana unit and when they might start hiring people up there. C-130s in Montana pretty much equates to my dream job (airframe + close to home), so if I have to stick around AD for a while longer for a spot to open up I would rather do that than skip out now and miss out. If anyone has any inside info on it or knows someone who would let me pick their brain, I'd appreciate it.

  17. Asking in regards to heavies. After going on drill status, what’s the longest amount of time you can regularly be away from the squadron? Is a month on/month off schedule (or 2 weeks on/off like ACME) possible? Not trying to game the system for BAH or anything, but if this sort of schedule was possible it would allow much greater freedom of living location. Thanks!

I was just wondering if anybody got into a situation of being offered a slot before interviewing with your prefered unit. By prefered, I mean a unit with your ideal airframe, location, or maybe a home unit for prior-enlisted.

  19. So I just got hired at a unit across the country. I currently am a homeowner and am okay with selling my house to make the move. I will need to move for UPT, PIQ, and finally to my unit. What assistance is provided to somebody in my situation? Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!

I'm a "new" nav, home from Pensacola for a little over a year in my <unnamed> ANG 130 unit. I know about the 2.5 year rule. We have a UPT/UNT board coming up in this summer. Lots of buzz about J's or 17's running around the squadron. I really enjoy being a nav, a crew dog, and flying (both in the 130 and currently working on PPL), and am curious about a few things... 1. 35 year old rule, ass in seat at UPT... I'm 31.5 years old, so I know I'll need a 30+ waiver. If your guard unit is sponsoring you, is this waiver really even an obstacle? Or is it granted if they want you to go to UPT? Does being a rated officer affect getting a waiver or extend the 35 ye…

  22. So I left active duty after serving 4 years of my 6 year contract with the intent to rejoin AD as a CSO. I recently found out the I have literally no depth perception according to all the AF tests. The Navy has a career very similar to the CSO that does not require depth perception. I am REALLY wanting to go Navy after I complete my degree in Summer 2017. At that time I will have slightly over 2 years left on my Palace Chase contract. I noticed in the Palace Chase AFI (36-3205) in section 1.12.10.2 that the "Gaining ARC Personnel Employment Element and/or Selecting Officials" may "not release PALACE CHASE members for transfer to non-Air Force components." This seems…

  23. Hello! I am currently an Active Duty Navy Helo pilot with 2 years left on my commitment to the Navy. I am trying to make the transition to ANG / AFRC Fighters and looking for some inspiration of anyone that has been picked up by a unit in a similar situation. I know the boards are very competitive and fighters can be harder on age but not too sure how units look at someone like me. I know my age is probably the biggest factor (I will be 31 when I apply). Two big questions I have: 1. What is the earliest I can apply to boards? Is a year out from my separation date sufficient? I am concerned with applying too early and still being tied to the Navy while a unit is…

  24. Sorry if this has been covered before, but my prior search of the forums did not reveal much of what I'm about to ask. I'm a Navy Jet student who is facing a possible attrition down the road. Still in training, but seems probable as I'm just not getting carrier landings down cold and have grades on the verge as a result. I'm 28, had decent primary grades, and am interested in still flying for the military in some capacity if things don't work out here. Has anyone heard of any protocol regarding a Naval Aviator attrite or a DOR applying to the guard? Does attrition or DOR pretty much nuke any chances a guard unit or the Air Force Reserves would pick me up? And of cours…

  25. Started by Seamus,

So my background is I am a Navy E2 Hawkeye pilot that got picked up as a full time reservist flight instructor in the strike pipeline flying t45 goshawks. I plan on finishing my career in the Navy but am wondering if it's possible to get hired by the ANG after. By then I'll be 42, have about 3500 + total time. I've always wanted to fly fighters, would it be possible to get hired at my age? If so, how would that affect my pension which would kick in at 42?
