Deid Accomodations

Recommended Posts

The AF Times has an interesting story w/ pics for the new place, 'Millenium Village'. Looks decent, although I'm not really sure I understand the rationale of the rooms sharing a kitchenette...I'd rather have my own room/bathroom, thank you.

What'll be REALLY nice is now we won't have to stay in the goddam tents whenever we come through as transients...transient aircrew don't get the trailer billets, just a tent w/ a dude working a jackhammer outside. Wonder how much of CC they'll tear down though...

New housing planned at al Udeid

If your idea of a deployment to the Persian Gulf region conjures visions of living in plywood barracks or trailerlike dorms, you may be surprised if your orders send you to al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Airmen at al Udeid are preparing to move into a permanent housing and recreation complex dubbed Millennium Village that has been in the works since 2003.

Millennium Village, built to house about 1,500 people, is slated to be in the “initial operational capability” phase by January, and by the end of 2008, the complex should be in “fully operational capability,” according to Air Force news release.

Once complete, Millennium Village will feature a mall, base exchange, recreation room with two golf simulators, food court, chapel, post office, dining facility, learning resource center, clinic, fire house, fitness center, dorms, a kennel and two search pits, the release said.

In the dorms, airmen will have bedroom suites that share a common kitchen area, much like new dormitories at bases in the U.S. Many of the stores will face an enclosed four-story atrium with a blue tile fountain in the center.

“Our goal is to assist in the transformation from an expeditionary base to an enduring base using a well-thought-out approach assuring Millennium Village is structurally sound and meets Air Force quality-of-life standards,” Lt. Col. Donald Reese, deputy chief of the 379th Expeditionary Mission Support Group, said in the Air Force release.

Al Udeid is the largest air base in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The base’s runway facilities were built by the Qatari government in mid-1990s. As the Air Force prepared for the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, al Udeid became a primary hub for air operations.

Today, the base is home to the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing and the Combined Air Operations Center. Because the base is far from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, some Air Force officials have suggested that as base facilities there improve, assignments to the base be treated as yearlong unaccompanied tours, much like tours to Korea are handled.

I hate to break it to you Rotinaj, but some of those pics have been floating around for at least a year and a half. I saw that pic with the covered pool tables while I was working in the CAOC last January. The day the first building is occupied by regular folks is the day I'll believe any projected "initial operational capability."

is "The Wheel" still there. I can't remember if camp andy is even used anymore. Haven't been there since 2004.

The Wheel/Bra is still there. Camp Andy closed in 2004 when I was there.

I doubt Tent/trailer city ain't goin away b/c of this (just like PSAB). IIRC, perm party folks will be first in line to live the high life. 1500 units should go fast.

Per the Wing King yesterday: Permanent party first (about 300 people), then aircrew (about 800 people), then the rest will fight to the death for the remaining beds. Hopefully that's what actually happens.

Is this going to be put into action soon, or is this still projected? I'm aircrew showing up for a 150 next week.

He said it'll open in January, but I've also heard that it won't be full until months after that. i.e. all 1500 might not move-in in January, but a few should.

I'll believe it when I see it.

The wheel and the bra are two different things...the bra is in CC, the wheel was in Camp Andy and closed along with the tent shitty in '04.

Heading to the Deid for the first time for a few months. Not sure what they have for electrical outlets. I heard somthing about 3 prong round outlets and 3 prong rectangle outlets. Not sure what i'm looking for and where to find them. Can you buy these adaptars there on base?

Also, what's the internet access like out there? Can you get yahoo mail, Gmail, hotmail, etc. Or is it the typical gay restricted internet we have here at home.

Each room should have a converter in it so that you can plug in your good old US electronic stuff, plus it steps down the voltage as well. The internet access that they have isn't as restrictive as we have back here in the states but you can't use chat programs or visit sites like myspace and other personal pages. If you want to you can have the com guys wipe your personal laptop so you can plug it up to the network there unless you happen to get a room with a computer in it. I know that my squadron when I was there we each had a computer in the room that we could check our work email as well as check most web based email sites.

Hope that this helps.

I'm there/ here now. Adapters aren't, but with those in the room, you're fine without bringing your own. Internet access is good. BRING A JACKET. Damn, I forgot it got cold here. Don't bring food for your room. Rodents everywhere. Pool's closed. If you could snag me a pack of Parliament Lights on your way, that would be awesome.

Do not smuggle in booze. It is not worth it.

Is the internet access from your room on your own PC, or is it the public computer thing? Can you get to normally blocked sites like Hotmail and Yahoo? What about using Skype to call home over the internet?

You can get hotmail, etc. If you want internet access in your room, you have to let them wipe your computer clean - erasing everything on it - bad idea usually.

Separate note; as of today, the base commander said the new dorms will be open the middle of Jan.

Speaking of the new dorms, I heard from someone who just got back that they will offer a commercial internet access in the rooms. This would give everyone access to webmail, skype etc and adios to the Comm weenies. Sounds to good to be true, maybe someone else can confirm?

there's a difference between it being hard-wired into each room on base and paying one service-provider for the access and buying your own satellite and doing it that way (my unit has a satellite in OIF). Although it's cheaper with the base-wide ISP, I've experienced it's faster if you have your own and limit the number of computers so there's more bandwidth for all. But then you have to worry about selling the satellite to someone when you leave (we just left ours in the CSAR compound in the hands of our sister squadron since we'll be back in 3 months).

They have now pre-positioned government computers in each dorm room (at least in all of the rooms where they put aircrew - I assume it is the same for other folks). You have to get your CAC activated and give them a copy of your latest Information Assurance certificate, but after that 15 minute process, you are online. No need to get your personal laptop waxed to get online. Plus they are saying there is a 1-3 week delay in getting your personal laptop cleaned out.

The good news about the PC's in the rooms is that they have unblocked Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. Still no chance to get any normal streaming sites like You Tube or anything, plus sites like Skype and so on are blocked. More good news is that there is an "entertainment" link on the intranet here. It has links to a few streaming TV stations like CNN and a few Air Force Network channels. Also, they have hundreds of movies that you can stream to the PC. A lot of them are pretty good - war movies like Patton, comedies like American Pie, etc. Oh, and the PC's have DVD players in them, so you can watch your DVD's on the 19 inch LCD screen that they provide instead of having to watch them on your laptops (there are speakers with the PC too).

On another note, I have heard from some higher ups that they are setting up a series of wireless access points around Coalition Compound that will allow you to get online with your laptops. Supposedly this is very near to completion. Some people have said that they can already get online periodically while they are testing the system. This means, as someone else mentioned, that you will be able to get online through an outside internet provider without having to go through the Comm Nazis. It also means streaming porn (at least until they put a stop to it) as far as I understand.
