A ton of great info has been passed around in the last year or two. The short answer is...GREAT assignment. If I had been active duty in T-1s, an RC-135 would have been one of my top 3 choices. Good base, community, squadrons, and mission. The only real drawbacks are that Omaha is pretty far from anywhere ("the heartland" ha!) and it snows there...although not really that much. My wife and I both enjoyed our 5 years there. As the twist on the old saying goes, "It's a great place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there." More going on than you'd think. LuvMyFly, You will enjoy it out there. I grew up about 185 miles west of there. An outstanding restaurant up in the stockyards on the south side of Omaha is called "Johnny's". Some of the best beef you will ever taste. Henry Doorly Zoo complex is really nice to visit as well. Plenty of stuff to do in the surrounding area. I have not lived in the state for several years but my parents tell the winters seem to be getting milder with not nearly the amount of snow that I remember growing up. Guest Robes Posted October 7, 2005 Share Posted October 7, 2005 I live 50 miles from Offutt. If you or your family like sports, there is a lot to do in Omaha. There is the College World Series, an NCAA tourny in the near future, a small time hockey team, plus much more. There are many great things happening in Omaha with the addition of the Qwest center about a year ago. Restaurants, there are plenty of them there is a great little Italian place off of the Martha street exit. There is also another great thing about Offutt... it is a great place to get into a Guard unit, if that is what you and your husband (assumption, please forgive me) so choose. There is an OSS (ANG) at Offutt which trains a lot of the 55th's aircrew. Family things to do... There is the Zoo, which BigIron pointed out. There is also the Joyslin Art Museum, a wild life safri about 20 miles west of town, and numerous state parks. There are several places for a weekend trip, Sturer (sp) museum in Grand Island and plenty of other places to go for historical learning. South of Omaha about an hour to hour and a half is Arbor Lodge, to home of Arbor Day. Kansas City is only about three hours to the south. If you want more information just let me know. College World Series AA Baseball D1 College Hockey AHL Hockey (new this year) Nebraska Furniture Mart (HUGE electronics store) If you are NOT a Huskers fan, go to ANY restaurant on a Saturday night with your date when the Huskers are playing at home. You will get a seat wherever you want. No lines at the grocery store, no lines at the mall, it was great. You can stay there for a while and still progress in your job, or you can move on to an overseas location. You kind of get stovepiped in the ACC ISR community, but there are ways out, you just have to be proactive. In all, I had a really good time. Lots of opportunities both at Offutt and elsewhere in the intel community (Pentagon, NSA, NRO, AIA, etc). Always VERY good promotion rates for all flyers up to Lt Col. Robes and BigIron covered quite a few of the bigger attractions. My wife and I did plenty of camping and boating while there. Many good restaurants and bars. Plus, and I can't believe Scooter left this out, the BOATs in Iowa. Gotta love craps and blackjack. he he. Always good to come back from a long TDY and get a suite at the AmeriStar. ;D Brother Sebastian's (126th and Pacific...just down from Fred's Pizze) is the best restaurant in town, IMHO. What is the RC community like (in other words....will a family fit in, or is it more a single pilot's lifestyle?)Is there a lot to do for kids? Is their support when your husband is gone? Last question....if you live on base, is their a certain floor plan, or area, that is better than another? What should we request? We are hoping for a BIG house. (We have 3 kids). Scooter14 Posted October 9, 2005 Share Posted October 9, 2005 A lot of people homeschooled, but I'm not sure of any groups. Lots of folks had families, there was a single crowd as well. Pretty standard. Lots to do for kids - Henry Doorly Zoo, playgrounds on base, playground in the fitness center, etc. Yes, everyone is deployed so much that there is a ton of support when your spouse is gone. They are redoing the base housing, so I would check with the housing office (402)294-1110 and ask for housing. They can send you everything you need. DH is a flight commander in the 45th ( combate sent, rivet joint and open skys) its a great unit and so is the town around here, we have loads to to and you will always find somthing to fill you'r days. "2" I took a crew up to Omaha RON, and everyone was griping about how lame they expected it to be. I didn't know squat either, so I asked the Base Ops dudes where the hook-ups were downtown, and it turned out that everyone had a fantastic night. Old Market rocks! Omaha is huge now even the the 6 years we have been here is just got so big. Another restaurant to check out is Grisanti's, on Old Mill and West Dodge. The Cabela's is news to me, but CB just opened up a Bass Pro Shop on their side of the river. And I second everything else already said, Old Market, College World Series, the Omaha Royals (aka Golden Spikes, Scooter forgot an 'A'), the SAC Museum is west of town, river boat casinos, hockey, and the list keeps going.
