  1. Because the guy slugging it out on line, doesn't get stratted because while he's teaching tactics in the bar, talking with the young guys, the careerist ###### is hobnobbing with leadership knowing that hard work only matters in the USAF when seen.

    That's the issue.

FWIW, the best C130 instructor I ever had WAS the guy teaching tactics in the bar to LTs, he was also the wing exec yet one of the most proficient pilots I've met. He's a school select now and a U2 driver.

Not sure why being tactically proficient and getting promoted/checking boxes is mutually exclusive.

  2. He seemed like a good dude at Yokota, from a young guys perspective. He was regularly in the squadron, engaged with everyone. flew with him once or twice, didn't hate it.

2, I found him to be an awesome dude. Very charismatic and always interacted with everyone, including us young LTs at the time. I think he will be a solid wing king especially after Rhat.

  3. What's the latest gouge? How's the flying?

Amazing, but busy. We have more hours than we know what to do with. Expect to fly several times a week locally. Tons of off stations: mostly Guam and Kadena but the occasional Thailand, Hawaii, New Zealand and Maldives trips drop. In the spring we go to a ton of exercises. You're still expected to do your ground jobs so it gets busy. Current leadership is fantastic though.

  4. Proud to say I am the herk's newest aircraft commander. Here is to being able to actually fly assaults and hopefully land in the zone, saying gear up instead of doing it, not having to buy the first round, not having to take the fat chick, and keeping loadmasters out of Thai prisons.

  5. Off to fundies and BFE here soon! SERE to follow at some point... By the remarks in this forum here it should be a BLAST! Any advice other than the run of the mill stuff?

Don't try to John Wayne it unless you like getting beat in the face. Actually don't do it period since you'll get everyone else in trouble.

    Take plenty of wet wipes.

  6. Today at the AFSOC Change of Command, 3 people passed out...during a 45 minute ceremony...inside a hanger.

THAT is a big part of what's wrong with the AF.

So? At the zoo we had track stars fall out occasionally. Standing at attention for 45 minutes listening to a scripted speech is stupid.

  7. I know there's two different mishaps in this thread, but bump for the original.

    :beer::beer: :beer: :beer:

It was exactly a year ago. The CC recalled everyone, when we walked into the squadron the entire chain of command and chaplain was there. Several people were crying. Darkest day I've witnessed in the Air Force.

There were a lot if young LTs and airmen that had never had anything like this happen in their squadron before. If anything good came out of that incident, it taught us to never ever be complacent and to take this job as seriously as possible.

A toast, rest in peace brothers.

  8. How's the manning now?

Much better! Awesome leadership, lot of tactical flying and tons of awesome TDYs (ie New Zealand, Hawaii, Malaysia.) That being said it's a dead end in terms of the legacy 130 community, unless you're one of the few that have the pipe dream of being initial J cadre.

  9. Agreed, but the devil is in the details. Some squadrons got zero people when this happened last year. Hopefully, those problems get fixed when fully implemented.

Posted from the NEW Baseops.net App!

We have a new CSS comm type airman working in our squadron, it's taken her more than a month to get people folder access. She is pretty much useless.

  10. Maybe this belongs in the UPT sub forums..

I envy this kid, UPT was awesome. All I had to do was learn how to fly, study, drink, chase the wonderful women of Enid and take videos to try to impress said women..

Now I get OPRs, paper work, more paperwork, masters, SOS, "career development" and hey sometimes get to fly as a hobby.

Enjoy UPT, and save that GoPro for your class video, our OG/cc was cool and approved it for our class video

  11. Truly remarkable forum. Must be meant for whiny Air Force aircrew who can not maintain simple standards. Come join the USMC, we'll teach you how to fly right.

You mean like your Phase 2 students who get lost on their solo ride? (In Pensacola where there is nothing but Gulf Coast due south). Or like those marine hornets who busted through our altitude block four times over an undisclosed location in Asia?

  12. Because you get to write OPR's and decorations and plan Christmas Party's. I don't know about you but when I was going through UPT, all I wanted to be was an exec and flying was an after thought...

One of our weapons school guys and best instructors was also the wing exec, granted he was voluntold but I don't see how those two things are mutually exclusive.

  13. Heard from our CC during a commander's call the other day that due to the reshuffling of the H, those expecting/trying to go J shouldn't hold their breath on getting a J slot. They are going to be few and far between (unless you are a fairly new guy already in the 61st or possible the 2nd) Expect a lot of white jets/UAVs/MC-12s/a few spec ops for assignments the next couple years.

Well...sh*t. Thanks for the memo. So much for wanting to grow in the 130 community.

  14. I know I am going to take some spears for this but here is another point of view. I agree that the box checking masters thing is stupid and I hate the diploma mills. Yes, the whole system is/was f-ed. However, you choose where to get the degree from and when to start it. If you choose to get a worthless box checking degree with your TA and then turn around and say that it is wasting tax payer dollars then aren't you part of the problem? Aren't you taking part in the whole problem that you are complaining about? Believe me, I understand the whole being busy thing and the ridiculousness of trying to become and then stay tactically proficient while having to knock out a masters but that is part of the game that you have to play. Taking away TA does not equal getting rid of the education requirements for promotion like many enlisted people are realizing right now. You can choose to get a real degree and start it early so you only have to take one class at a time. This is doable. I am not advocating it, and I think the AF should get rid of the masters requirement and send you to get one if they want you to have one so that you can focus on tactical things, but that is not reality right now. Hopefully that changes. So, when it comes down to cutting TA I don't look at it like many of you are. There are all of the arguments that have been made but what this boils down to for me is that the government has chosen to cut a military benefit. A benefit that many people were counting on and now it is gone. A benefit that might have played a part in getting you to sign on that dotted line. So, instead of looking at it like we might not have to do masters degrees anymore I wonder what they will be willing to cut next? I have read several times recently how liberals are calling military TA welfare in a nontraditional form and how the military needs to share in the burden of getting the economy back on track. If that does not piss you off then I have nothing for you.

    2,

besides, we can't really focus on our primary job since leadership will probably insert some other useless waste of time in place of all the flying hours just lost.
