  1. From what I've heard, guard squadrons are incredibly competitive. Based on everything I've heard, the most common guys that get picked up are former active duty pilots preferably in that airframe with a ton of flying hours and cool/fun personalities to be around. Read into that how you want. Definitely not requirements as I've heard of guys without that resume get in. I would say the personality is probably a requirement though lol

I was the guy that accepted the CSO slot in hopes of eventually reapplying to UPT. I kept my mouth shut about it, worked hard and ended up starting an awesome career in the strike eagle. 10/10 I would recommend to anyone that wants to fly fighters (yes we fly the jet too). Viper pilots see us as second class citizens but those guys are bingo-ing out halfway through the VUL while we're doing the heavy lifting so I don't really listen to them anyway. All that to say, if you get offered a CSO slot not all hope is lost. I'm still applying to UPT, this is my second year applying. I was an alternate last year. I have a lot of reasons to be hopeful this time around, should find out any day. Fingers crossed

The three comments are just about a form on the package. I am hoping that despite that message it still drops on the historical 10 Jan that the board results normally release on.

10 Jan was when commanders found out. That message above is referring to when results are released to the public which is 7 days later. "Late Jan" could very well be considered 17 Jan. Either way it seems like a long time if they already have the names

Unfortunately my Group didn't push my package this year; I wish I had found out way sooner that the main focus of the board was leadership and adaptability.

I focused HEAVILY on scores (99 PCSM, PPL, high 80s pilot AFOQT) at the expense of just about everything else.

Fortunately my leadership has become aware and is offering me robust opportunities to present those qualities, but that was an extremely bitter learning lesson.

Future pilot applicants: don't be like me and focus on scores at the expense of leadership. It's what cost me a slot in AFROTC and cost me the board now. Coming from a poor background as well, it doesn't cost extra money to develop yourself as a leader as it does to get those flight hours.

Don't count yourself out yet. You submitted your application still, right?

I have got some recommendations of intel as well; however, idk if I see myself enjoying a job like that.

I got a meeting with the AFE crew and the squadron coming up, so we will see how that goes. I appreciate the help gents! 🙂

If you are only interested in interacting with pilots, I recommend AFE and maybe Intel. If you interested in applying to pilot training, I recommend ATC.

Last year's was the 11th for CC notification, the 10th the year prior I believe. So yeah, countdown has begun! Que anxious impatient applicants (self included)! If I was a betting man, I'd say there are more slots this year compared to last with retention bonuses still at an all time high for +10yr pilots.

As some of you know I was med DQ'd a while back; however, I just got the call today and finally got my ticket punched. I really appreciate the help through this journey, y'all are the best.🥲

I was also given a list of jobs I qualify for in regards to ASVAB and physical quals. As of right now there are no details on what is open, but here are the options:

    image.jpeg.b70bf98e8b803304e699aee13bf48ee6.jpeg

Unfortunately I was one point off the mechanical section on the ASVAB to qualify for crew chief (just my luck🥰). As a result, I am left with three options that give me exposure to the jet and pilots. I can work as an Aircraft Armament System Apprentice (I don't believe this would give me much interaction to the pilots, but it is F-22 related and a 15k bonus; cha ching), fingers crossed AFE has an opening and I can take that job, or if not I can also retest to qualify for crew chief.

ive researched the jobs and understand that I should choose what I would most enjoy (I am leaning towards AFE). But, ultimately I am wondering from your guys' perspective what your thoughts are?

which job would give me the best shot with f-22 pilot as the goal in mind? if I build a good rep in the unit, does the distinction of the job really matter? Are their some enlisted jobs that pilots favor over others?

I recommend Air Traffic Control. You get to work in the control tower, talk to pilots on the radio, and watch them takeoff and land.

I would also guess ATC would be better for eventually applying to UPT because you get good at talking on the radio and already understand a lot of local flying operations. Anecdotally I know several enlisted ATC guys that were picked up for pilot but don't know any AFE guys.

What was your scores as well if you don’t mind sharing?

    Last years scores?

Highlights were 88 PCSM, 99 pilot AFOQT, 25 flying hours, 100 on the PT test (lol), #2 Wing ranking, and wing commander letter of rec.

Lowlights were I was a newly promoted captain with not much on my resume yet. Some minor awards and accomplishments but nothing substantial to showcase my leadership or potential. My leadership knew I was a great applicant but I ultimately wasn't able to prove that to AFPC. Also had a 2.9 college GPA. I'm not sure if that's a huge problem but it's worth noting. I majored in civil engineering and consistently worked 2 part time jobs plus a year-round internship throughout college to make ends meet so it was tough balancing school work, studying and paying the bills (I was very poor and did not come from money). AFPC just sees a GPA though, not the back story.

I mentioned this in a previous comment either in this thread or last years thread: AFPC really cares about leadership. The "quantifiable numbers" like PCSM, AFOQT, etc make up only 30% of how they score an applicant. They care much more about what you've done as an officer and what you're capable of doing. This last year I focused on improving my application in  those areas. In some ways, I didn't have to do anything other than continue doing a good job at my job, and based off natural career progression for my AFSC in a year's time I would have a lot to showcase. In other ways I actively looked for opportunities to include on my application (volunteer work, projo, queep, etc). Fingers crossed I did it right this time. I figure if I don't get selected, I still set myself up for success otherwise

Got picked up as an alternate last year and this just triggered my PTSD lol. Hopefully for all of us there's more selects than that this year

Same here! Was an alternate, ultimately not selected though. Now for a not-so-fun story:

I know a current pilot that was an alternate his first time applying. His second time applying he wasn't even an alternate 😬 then on his THIRD time applying he wasn't selected AGAIN even though he was like ACC WSO of the Year and #1 push from his Wing. His leadership called and ultimately changed their minds on that third try.

    Alright dudes and dudettes,

From a credible source... there were ~200 applicants and ~110 selects.  Please reference below for approximate numbers:

    Pilot Selects - 70

    CSO Selects - 20

    RPA Selects - 10

    ABM Selects - 10

The numbers don't sound great but there is a chance we get selected!  Stay prayed up and lets hope this credible source meant ~110 pilot selects instead.

The number of selects sounds the same, but does anyone know how many applicants there were last year? I feel like there was a lot more last year (300ish?), so the percentage of selects would be higher

    Happy Veterans Day everyone,

I am not new to the forum, I’ve just been lurking and posting here and there.  I figured I’d post my stats below.  I am a UPT (#1) or ABM (#2) hopeful.  As weird as it sounds, I was essentially an enlisted ABM and it was dope!

Current MQ-9 IP with ~1200 hours

    AFOQT Pilot:  99

    PCSM:  96

    PPL with 99 civ hours

    UFT Wing Strat:  #2/3

M.S. in Unmanned Systems (Embry-Riddle online):  3.9 GPA

    YG:  2018

Some things I included in my package:

    OPR Strats listed on 215

    o   2021 (JrCGO): #8/341 (Wing CC)

    o   2022 (JrCGO):  #1/42 (Sq CC), #2/134 (Group CC), #5/350 (Wing CC)

Awards listed on 215, Personal Statement, and LORec

    o   Officer Awards:

    - 3x Quarterly awards (2x squadron, 1x group)

    - 1x Annual Award (squadron)

    - 3x Superior Performer awards (2x squadron and 1x joint/coalition exercise)

    o   Enlisted Awards:

    - Commendation Medal as a SrA

    - 3x Quarterly awards (group equivalent)

    - Commandants Award in ALS

    Additional items:

    Safety School Grad (2022)

    Electromagnetic Course Grad (2022)

I am extremely thankful to be an applicant this year and hope there are more selects than last year.  I’ve noticed scores are not everything.  My buddy applied last year with a 99 PCSM/98 Pilot and was not selected.  Good luck to everyone.  We got this!!

Your stats should be perfect for UPT, but I'd be worried they'll give you ABM since you put it on there and they need good ABMs

    Yeah 40% leadership, 30% adaptability/potential, 30% aptitude(METRICS)

Yeah I guess my question is what constitutes a perfect score vs how do they subtract points?

I noticed the starting point is 7.5, so what are the thresholds for adding/subtracting. I.e. I assume Wing ranking of #1 is worth a certain amount of points, I assume a certain AFOQT/PCSM scores equates to a certain amount of points, etc etc. Or am I assuming incorrectly? Also, how do they score subjective things such as letter of rec and personal letter?

New to the forum, good luck to all you dudes and dudettes!

    my stats:

    current RPA IP

    869 combat MQ9 hours, 400 other hours

90 civ hours (no ppl) lots of ultralight

    78 PCSM

    88 Pilot AFOQT

O6 chief of safety at Randolph gave letter of Rec

Personal letter focused on being selected to plan sorties for our RPA wing in the ECS to combat near peer adversary.

    strat: 3 at the wing.

how the data trends, looks like they alternate high and mid level pickup numbers. Last year they selected 69. Fingers crossed this year they take close to 100 this year.

Good luck everyone. We’ve got this!

    Nervously,

I remember seeing 69 selected and couldn't help but wonder if that number was intentional... Lol

I hope you're right about alternating!

  13. Just submitted mine. Here's my stats:

    - 88 PCSM

    - 99 AFOQT

    - 25 Flight hours (No PPL)

    - Gp/CC (O-6) signed my letter of rec

    - 1 out of 5 Wing ranking on AF215

For perspective, I applied last year, was selected as an alternate but ultimately not picked up. I was given feedback by the AFPC board that 40% of what they look at is leadership qualities and 30% is potential. So this last year I focused on improving in those areas and made sure I included them in my letter of rec, personal letter, and bullets in the AF215. I believe it helped me earn the top Wing ranking.

The main thing I did not do is get more civilian flying hours/get a PPL. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars if I don't need to.

Fingers crossed I make it this time, and good luck to everybody else.

Edit: for the curious, AFPC said the remaining 30% of what they look at is the quantifiable numbers (gpa, fitness test, test scores, etc)

I have since found out that I am ineligible to go AD Air Force. Having "previously received a commission in any of the uniform services" is disqualifying and unwaiverable (AFMAN 36-2032).

That, combined with the IST program being shut down indefinitely, means that prior service O's from other branches can't come over to AD Air Force. Looks like I'll keep going down the NG route for a UPT slot.

    Good luck everyone.

Only because I'm stuck at a computer at work with nothing to do and curious, I tried looking it up and couldn't find the disqualifying statement you referenced. Where does it say it?

Edit: nevermind, I found it. AFMAN 36-2023, Table 10.6, Rule 8 references Attachment 24.

That doesn't make any sense at all! Sorry to hear that. I would think they would appreciate having an officer bringing knowledge of how sister services operate.

I read "Active Duty Officer Board" to mean a board for people wishing to become active duty AF officers, not a board for people who were already active duty AF officers. I'll see myself out...

I'm a prior service O from another branch. Like you mentioned, IST is suspended; the AD Flying board is for current AF officers, and the Line Officers board is for civilians or enlisted personnel seeking to become AF officers. As far as I can tell there is no path for prior service officers from other branches to enter the Air Force. Unless I'm missing something (please tell me if I am!) it looks like my only option is to continue pursuing a slot in the guard.

Only guessing here, but I think you have to contact an OTS recruiter and apply as a civilian for your AF commission. That's what I did, but I wasn't prior service. Either way, they should be able to point you in the right direction. *Make sure you contact an officer recruiter not an enlisted recruiter.

Edit: being a prior service officer will greatly help your application for obvious reasons as long as you separated for good reasons. I'm 90% certain this is the way.

Another dumb question for the group: where can I find PSDM 23-54? I don't have access to MyFSS and haven't turned up the PSDM through searched. The recruiters I've worked with are less than helpful; both the AD recruiters and interservice transfer office keep referring me to one-other saying they can't process a former O from another branch (now civilian).

I know I'm behind the curve here - like I said in a previous post, I've been on the Guard/Reserves "circuit" of interviews for a while but new to the AD process. I think I have just about everything I need to submit to the AD board other than the FC1, and I don't even know where to begin with that. I think getting my hands on PSDM 23-54 is a good place to start. Any other tips for someone just starting this process, who knows next to nothing about it?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but just to properly set your expectations. Getting your FC1 can/probably will take a while. If I had to guess a range, it will take 2-6 months. If you haven't started it, you are unlikely to submit your application on time. The good news is once you get it, it's valid for 4 years so you don't need to worry about for next years application.

You can always reach out to the AFPC selection board with questions, I have found them to be very responsive and helpful. Their email is AFPC.DPMO.UFTBOARD@us.af.mil
