I don’t want to piss on specific airframes here but there are entire communities (US and allies) that don’t realize they are backup to backup in the A/A realm but they spend 69%+ of their resources training to it.

Piss away. Everyone pull out your #skyart and let's get to measuring.

While I agree, the benefits of training to A/A are magnitudes greater than any other type of mission set when it comes to developing all aspects of a pilot in fighter aviation. So while some communities may be on the B-team (or C-team if you look at USMC legacy Hornets) when Chinese hordes launch, training to that level and mission set has immeasurable benefits.

I've had a few drinks so, with all due respect, I'm calling bullshit.

It's a natural f#cking phenomenon that happens when young dudes fly something with AB.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it’s an easy item to cover in the brief - “Don’t use your ing left hand to fix your position.” And they’re pretty decent about it. Sure, they’re always 800-1,000 lbs below lead, but that’s more on account of sawing the throttle throughout all phases of flight.

The Navy has 10 or 15 tacform flights in the T-45 devoted solely to... Tacform. The geometry is the same in the Hornet.

  3. Throttle management should be a discussion for classes, chalk talks, and briefs. Every F-18 Cat 1 knows not to select Max to fix a sucked position, and they’ve never flown in an aircraft with AB prior. A trainer doesn’t need AB, awesome to have, sure. But certainly not required.

I’d rather them get trained up on a synthetic GPS based radar to learn the proper division between form, sensor, and comm before showing up in a true fighter.

My understanding is the AUS det is step one of an “innovative program” that, when fully operational, will seek to turn an off the street high school grad into an F35 wingmen in one year.

Sounds like something from the first of the series of Matrix movies. Would love to know more how they plan to do something like this with an 18 year old. Playstation and XBox involved?

Attention any lurking senior leaders: get your shit together, go to congress, and stand on their desks until they give you $600m annually for aircrew bonuses. That's $100k more for 6k dudes. All of the harebrained ideas above will cost you way more than that; $600m is only enough to get 600 unqualified wingmen/copilots vs getting thousands of experienced guys to stay.

    Dont make this hard.

Last I saw it was closer to $10 million to get a dude to show up to a fleet squadron as a wingman not even qualified to fly into combat. Granted, that’s in an F/A-18 but it can’t be too significantly different. I’d say you’re overestimating the number of fighter pilots you get for $600 million by a factor of 10. Which makes your argument even stronger.

I'm not doubting there would be or are growing pains (in cycling non-CAF pilots to T-38 IP positions) nor am I doubting there is a cultural difference that is imbued in students when their instructors have a CAF / pointy nose background, my point is to say that this is a tactic that can be used to deal with this immediate, particular problem (F-16 pilot shortage requiring new approaches to manning) not as a wholesale change in policy.

It'd probably be cheaper, easier, and more effective to give the CAF dudes more incentive to stay. The result of this, if implemented, will have a terrible effect on the fleet gun squadrons (or whatever you guys call them).

  7. Forgive me if I don't have this correct, but the premise is that high performing dudes in T-6s will go straight to F-15/16/22/35?

What about the dudes who perform well in initial flight training only because they have a ton of flight time? I know countless dudes who selected tailhook (T-45) based on that premise and attrited because they didn't have the capacity to do the basics required in fighter aviation.

I can see all sorts of issues with this approach if it comes to fruition. We're already seeing a decline in capacity of our average Cat 1 Hornet pilot showing up to the RAG compared with five years ago. I couldn't imagine what it may look like for you guys with this implemented.

Yeah, no kidding right.. lol. Different topic but while I have your attention; so per the new AFI regarding SERE school, the Level C Navy/Marine SERE school isn’t accepted . It specifically calls out our school as not transferable to meet Air Force standards. So my unit is working on a waiver for me so I don’t have to do it again. Are you fighting the same battle? What a load of crap right. I might have to do SERE again.

    Shhh...

I've been deployed to a combat zone and managed to slip through the Navy/Marine SERE cracks. Wasn't planning on ever bringing it up if I make it into the AF Reserves/Guard and was hoping lightning might strike twice.

C-130’s. You? Some of the guys in the squadron said not to do it until someone says something. Lol. Just wasn’t sure if anyone in our shoes has successfully promoted without it. I saw the writing on the wall with EWS too. Two years of PME when it’s not guaranteed to get you promoted.. Stupid... I saw too many good dudes waste their time with EWS only to get passed over. SOS 2.0 is a different program now. Not as easy as the previous course. Plus I’m up against a timeline now. In school learning the new aircraft and don’t have time for SOS. Won’t be done until April. This puts me past my 7 year mark. If anything, I might have to do resident SOS/PME. Not sure what NGB will do once they catch this. Lol

Hornets. SOS 2.0 is the version that I completed. It really isn't that difficult. Two months vs. two years, it was a no brainer.

Hello everyone. I recently crossed over from the USMC to the ANG as a pilot. This February I’ll hit seven years as a Captain/O3. I was told by my unit that I need to be with the unit for a year before being looked at for promotion to O4 under  ROPMA. Since I don’t have the Air Force SOS PME done or started, will this be the deciding factor for selection to O4? IMO, I’d rather not do it if I don’t need to. If it is required, if I’m atleast enrolled and or doing it but not complete, will this allow me to be selected? Thanks.

What’s your background? I’m looking at doing the same but managed to knock out SOS last winter via distance learning.

Its PME, so it’s not ideal, but it’s vastly superior to EWS which I chose not to complete. It only took two months.

Trend item: dudes are afraid to divert, go around, or eject.  First step is admitting we have a human factors problem...several years ago I randomly had a bro in the backseat during a sortie (he MND'd, decided back seat was better than queep); a standard shitty wx approach to mins with rain/wet runway and extreme canopy pooling - it was his, "we just passed the 5 board" that made me go around.  I was fixated on trying to land and time distortion made me feel like we couldn't possibly be more than 1.5K to 2K down the 10K runway.  No good divert and the next try he called my flare off the RALT.  Only time in my life I was glad to be in a D-model.

Point is, canopy pooling is a real bitch and we have a cultural problem to some extent regarding decisions to divert, go around, or eject.  Now that I"m more experienced I feel like it's less of an issue personally (but not totally gone), but I see it fairly strong in the younger guys - it's a thing.  Monday morning QB'ing is great and all, but it's better to acknowledge this issue and be proactive in teaching the less experienced to understand when to divert, go around, or eject and more importantly, make them truly feel such actions are the right thing and not looked down upon.

Does the community adhere to the speed reference of twice the board number for go around? I.E., if you are greater than 100 kts at the 5 board, go around? It's pretty standard in the USN/USMC Hornet community and has probably saved more than a few dudes. We've got several mishaps on the books where guys disregarded it for one reason or another.

    Sorry - Canopy pooling?

The chances are good. MPA days for all my friends! I think we'll see this program greatly expanded. There's probably a greater number of part-timers willing to go full time on USERRA Leave from the airlines than there are retirees willing to come back.

    Yesterday:

Active-duty positions added for Guard, Reserve pilots increasing pilot retention, production and absorption into the force.

Are AGR positions entitled to the bonus? If my family didn't have to move every three years, I could fly as much as some squadrons in the Guard/Reserves do (which is a lot compared to the USMC), not be deployed/TAD on a one-to-one ratio, and I could accept a $48k/year bonus, that would probably keep me from putting in my apps.

  14. How can you hold someone accountable in a position which they are forced into, which is as unforgiving as combat aviation? Sounds like an ORM nightmare. I can see the monthly Human Factor Councils (or whatever the AF calls them) already...

If all you're required to do is to brief, get dressed, man up, fly and debrief, then this would be amazing. I just can't see how you're going to force someone to do the other tasks we all despise if you're not dangling the flight carrot out there since they've already passed on it...
