  1. That's kind of like the "dutch oven" (aka "covered wagon"), which is a fun trick you can play on your wife in the morning.
  2. They should make the Air Force battlecry: "PLASMASCREEEEEEN!!" And the troops can speak it in an elevated tone while they safely charge towards the snack bar.
  3. I heard an instructor talk about a good one the other night - the tubes that run down the tops of each side of the windows on the flight deck of the Herk that the visors are attached to are hollow (and about 1/4" in diameter) and they are two separate tubes. They start on each side a few feet behind each pilot and wrap around to the front along the top edge of the window frames and leave about an 8" gap between them where they stop, and in SKE equipped planes, the SKE radar is kind of obstructing where they let out. But they're hollow, and the ends are open. This guy was telling us about a time where the engineer got up out of his seat for a minute and lit a cigar while the pilots were busy flying. He then goes up to the open end of the tube behind the copilot and blows the thickest smoke he can slowly down the tube. Flying along happily and then suddenly "Oh shit, everybody on oxygen we have smoke up here!" All the pilots can see is smoke slowing appearing from behind the glareshield somewhere. And the engineer just chuckled and enjoyed his cigar (the OLD days, apparently). Ha ha, electrical fires are fun!! [ 29. October 2005, 01:22: Message edited by: Rocker ]
  4. I thought we just had an "Air Force or Marine Corps" thread here recently. I'm not sure how to find it though. But to answer your first question, that should not matter. I had two friends go Army (.com) from AFROTC. One difference here though is that you'd have to go to Marine OCS. [ 26. October 2005, 13:36: Message edited by: Rocker ]
  5. It seemed that I puked in both bus stops by the track at Laughlin one time walking from a party that I never actually made it to on my way back to the dorms. I had to stop to take a little "rest" there - I remember it being so windy, and I was in the midst of a 3:00 AM (very) drunk-dial to my then-girlfriend-now-wife in which I professed my love repeatedly and expertly recited boldface, and those bus stops were just damn good shelters. She was just happy I was being "safe." Not one of my finest moments, perhaps. Not my worst though, either.
  6. That's weird I came up with six...what question was your answer for Toro?
  7. Here's a link to a little blurb about the U-2 written by an instructor I simmed with a couple times during T-6s. U-2 flying
  8. Linda's advice should be the stock answer to this timeless question in perhaps a baseops forum FAQ featuring the more common items. Then when questions like this unwittingly arise, new arrivals can simply browse an "FCIF" type FAQ section (displayed prominently at the top of General Discussion) and receive their answers quickly. Yes, there's already somewhat of a FAQ for how to get a pilot slot, but maybe there could be one for common general questions like this one that repeatedly get (or deserve) the "use the search funtion" kind of response.
  9. They should have had a photo with just three of the T-birds, to represent a cross section of the Clinton rape of the military during his historic presidency.
  10. Here at the school house there's a little room where you can watch all kinds of videos, one of which is a five minute deal on the Four Horsemen. It's definitely very cool and impressive stuff, but I'm just thinking about public interest. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't be going to get another hamburger when they go on!
  11. I wonder what the public would think about a C-130 formation demo team. I don't know that they'd appreciate it all that much. Big planes, no matter how close together, at 200-250 KIAS just isn't as cool to the average person as small planes making lots of noise at 300-500 KIAS. You'd have to explain to them why it's so neat.
  12. Yet another piggyback... I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in almost six years. I've been pulled over seven times in that time. Every time, I've done basically what that web link above mentions. Being polite, admitting your mistake, and keeping the officer's safety obviously first go a very long way, along with having all the interior lights on when he walks up if it's dark outside. I don't retrieve anything until he asks to see it, and when I do, I tell him what I'm doing (got that from a CHiPs episode). Doesn't help the original poster now, but the point is, the cop has a choice on what to do with you when he pulls you over, and most of the time, it depends how the driver responds. I can see how asking to see a radar readout, or questioning him about his equipment would rub him the wrong way. STFSx2. And also, the last time I got pulled over was pretty funny. On the way to base early morning a couple of weeks ago. It was a very rare occasion that I woke up late and was really hustling that early in the morning. So sure enough, there I was, pulled over for 51 in a 35 about a mile from the gate (though it was actually a 40 right where he got me - doesn't matter). All the standard protocol. He goes back to his car to check up on me when all of a sudden I hear his door swing open, followed immediately by the pounding of boots on the pavement, and the sounds of keys, weapons, and a heavy body being moved quickly towards me, which I confirmed in the sideview mirror. He throws my stuff back at me and in a deep Arkansas drawl blurts, "just slow it down, OK? I gotta go!" Before I could put a "yes sir, I sure will" together correctly, I can hear his wheels spinning in reverse and he backs onto the main road and takes off with lights on, max blast. I can hear lots of distant sirens, go through the gate, and turn back on the AM radio to hear, "...and it looks like we have an over-turned vehicle on 67 in Jacksonville, traffic is at a complete stop..." Rocker - 1, Jacksonville - 0. Always a reminder to me to stop speeding, though. [ 11. October 2005, 19:40: Message edited by: Rocker ]
  13. I don't know what you're all talking about. It sounds like a challenging and rewarding job, this "aggressive SAR." If things don't pan out for me in the AD rescue world, I think I'll probably give him a call. Then I will poke holes in my lungs with a pencil until it all goes away. I was laying low in phase 2 of UPT when this thread came out and don't remember it, but it's typical of an idiot (SPN-type) just trying to get a reaction out of as many people as possible, and it looks like he sure got one. And here the reaction continues. Hopefully, somewhere and somehow, he's been thrashed severely for his insolence.
  14. I'll take "The Penis Mightier" for $500.
  15. McCain Park is really nice. I know, because I live there.

    Galveston

Looks like Houston might get some rain and a little wind. I bet there's some general media-fueled hysteria working as part of the fall out of Katrina, but Houston is not situated precariously 12 feet below sea level with crappy levees holding back a big, dirty lake overhead. Neither is Beaumont or Port Arthur. Plus they're ready for it, and the non-democrat local and state gov'ts aren't going to hinder rescue efforts. Vastly different. I just hope the sensationalism is kept to a minimum (ain't gonna happen, but whatever), damage isn't too bad, and the oil people can get right back to work driving down the cost of gasoline. And also, we should do away with OPEC.
  17. Even if he was referring to the H's, he'd still be wrong...they are still dropping. Maybe a cutback is planned, but Corpus has not experienced that yet. He might know something about the planning and we just haven't seen it yet.
  18. They should just contract out UAV jobs.
  19. "Before criticizing someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away, and you have their shoes." Good point about the grunts doing what they're told, that's true - but it's the ones who go a step further on their own to ascert their "power" who tend to paint the picture for the rest of Security Forces. I really never complained about having to pee six times for them within a few months; they were just doing their job. But a 19 year-old kid with a badge, guns, and a radio having the ability to hold authority over a major (for instance) would be a tough thing for even the most intelligent teenagers to manage maturely. And add in the production of their environment, status among other jobs and their schedules, and it's not hard to see how they might become a little disgruntled and tangled up in their own condition. Still, no excuses. That said, getting pulled over for driving too slowly to show your wife around is right out.
  20. Since I never drive over the speed limit, or certainly anywhere near 21 in a parking lot, and make sure that my tires some to a COMPLETE stop at every stop sign in the world and intentionally have no cracks in my windshield, I never catch any hell from the pi... er SF dudes. We shouldn't call them SF dudes by the way - makes them sound cool. However, during my short time at Navy Corpus, I was summoned NO LESS than 6 times for a piss test. The last three were in my last two weeks there. I thought they were messing with me. Somebody would call me in the morning telling me I was "randomly selected" to go pee for them and to be at the "brig" by 1300. They must have thought I was on crack or something. Or my pee was really tasty to them. Never can tell with the Navy. I have a question. They always used to tell us at Laughlin to NOT drive home drunk from the O'club. Walk, arrange a ride, whatever. But what if you are drunk, walk home safely, and THEN decide to just go out for a drive? Is that illegal? They never said anything about that.
  21. Now THAT is f-ing funny. FC. Can't see it on any kind of t-shirt, but that is GD great command of the language.
  22. I don't know, man, 21 in a parking lot? You're just the kind of riff raff my mom warned me about!
  23. I've had my RayBan Predator 8's since '99. They're no good to fly with, but the lenses are awesome. I like cheap sunglasses also, especially foaklies if I can find them, but the lens quality is almost never there.
