Boom Operator Q&A
Crew chief AFSC no longer required to be an FE. We're currently training former TRANS and Finance guys to be FEs at the FTU. Not providing an opinion, just stating facts...

Whats the funniest thing you've heard over the radio?
It's the early 90's, and I'm a brand new Tweet FAIP fresh out of PIT on my first T3 cross country with another IP. We're on our second leg from Amarillo to Colorado Springs, it's about 10pm and Denver Center's frequency is dead quiet for almost 10 minutes. Then... (Female Voice): "United 69 checking in level at 350" (Denver Center): "United 69, Denver Center, Roger. Say, are you flying one of those new 777s?" (Female Voice, obviously proud): "Why yes, I am, and I must tell you it's a most wonderful ride..." and then she proceeds to go on for a minute or two about how great daddy's new cadillac is... (Unknown): "Dammit...a brand new aircraft and it already has a crack in the seat!" Followed by another 10 minutes of silence...

How many generations of flying in your family?
No military in my immediate family until me. I grew up on a cattle ranch about 10 miles north of the AF Academy. With all of the flybys (along with the Colo ANG out of Buckley flying A-7s and the Pete Field Reserve flying Herks) over our place all the time, it was easy to dream about flying while I was cleaning stalls or bucking hay bales.

C-130 Hercules questions
FL330 from Yokota to Elmendorf...could've made 350 easy, but there's something about the fuel freezing that convinced us otherwise.

C-130 IP School
You're an IP candidate, which means you should already have the GK and flying skills to be an IP. If you show up lacking either, expect extra attention. As Linda and tac airlifter said--if you're prepared and work hard, you'll do fine.

C-130 IP School
Show up prepared and ready to work. The ARANG has recently "upped the ante", and about 60% of the students going through are having problems at one point or another in the program. 3 IP candidates sent home this year for lack of basic knowledge/flying proficiency.

C-130 Hercules questions
Not at all...I give instrument evals to about 25% of each MPD class, and the students who didn't go through Corpus are better instrument pilots hands down. Could be attributed to the lack of familiarity with the 11-217 and 202V3, or maybe the long BIT between Corpus and the FTU for non-LRF assigned studs. But even the Corpus grads going to the 50th/61st have more problems with basic instrument flying...

C-130 Hercules questions
Better instrument pilot, too??? You're kidding, right? Corpus grads are historically weak in instrument procedures...why do you think AMC spent millions developing an instrument approach trainer for the FTU?
