The community is kept overmanned for a reason. The C-17 community is one of a few kept overmanned on purpose - as the shock absorber for Predators and UPT assignments... No shit - straight from the assignment manager's mouth.
But as a guy going to his 3rd flying assignment and rapidly approaching my gate month quota in the next 1.5 years, thats a valid concern as well.
Chuck
we are definitely overmanned according to AFPC. I got booted out of the C-17 as an IP to preds and I personally know more that were in the same boat.. C-17 as a community can easily absorb extra bodies

Do most people go with the Hawaiian theme for their shirts or do you just pick some random fabric and go from there? I was thinking either a Hawaiian print or an airplane print theme for mine but didn't know how a pattern like that would work out on the shirt itself.
do whatever random pattern you want.. seriously.. it's not a Hawaiian shirt

10 years ago this month (April 1-11) this happened. I work with the only AF guy on that plane (now a Capt) and he is a really cool guy. A couple of gee whiz stuff about that:
The Chinese Pilot's name is Wang Wei which when pronounced sounds like wong way
The pilot got a DFC for landing safely (and handing over tons of secretes to the Chinese) while the crew got AMs.
was the pilot supposed to ditch? I think I would have done the same thing instead of killing my crew

I got the RPA slot back in Dec and just got dates today. Looks like we're sill going to ASBC.
14 May - DOC
08 June - EAD
17June - 22 July - ASBC
21 Sep - 22 Sep -Training, no more info
4 Jan - 2 April - Training. IFS?
On another note, if you rock out at IFS and any other training, you think there's any way to move up to a full pilot slot?
Highly doubtful at this time.. we need you to sit in the GCS so the masses of dudes that already graduated pilot training can leave the rpa..
but you never know with the air force.. shit can change overnight especially in the rpa world

Air Force Accepts Delivery of Final MQ-1 Predator
It is unfortunate that Congress saw a need for more than 187, but hopefully the procurement process for the next system includes some meaningful testing and evaluation... maybe even a competitive process.
Meaningful testing? hah you're funny

awesome story

I'm just hoping it's not as bad as we all are assuming..
######ing animals.. strung up and left for dead is too easy of a punishment
-
The US govt charters the aircraft, you reimburse the govt. Last time I was cognizant of something like this it wasn't too bad...something like $300 a seat, but it depends on what the govt pays and how far they take you. Don't expect 38" pitch seats!
I'm thinking they wouldn't care if it was a herk taking them home at this point.

Definitely they have Caravans, their new builds have come thru TIK from Wichita for a gas and go on their way to Florida for mods, can't comment on the 172's.
at kirkuk they had 172s and ""combat" caravans last year

even better make the balloons look like mohammad!

Badass.
concur

Although I could see a problem when it needs to land and refuel.
well i guess it has no IR signature and they probably won't stick it near a mountain top
-
how are they going to stop the hadjis from shooting at the freakishly large blimp?

If you rent out a room from a friend the difference b/w rent and BAH is probably a lot more than the equity you'll be getting in a house
just keep in mind that owning a home comes with it's own expenses that you might not have realized yet. Make sure you do your homework.
if you just want to own your own place then I understand
-
Just rent out a room from one of your bros that bought and put your shit in storage.. Bank that BAH until you will be home enough to enjoy your house or have a family to live in it.

Copy, not a pilot.
owned

It would be WAY cheaper than a "real" companion trainer and just the thought would do a crazy amount for morale.
And why would big blue care about morale?

Actually, he's pretty spot on as far as the schism. Why are traditional pilots so anti-RPA? Ego? Childhood dreams? I don't know. It's a large part of the future, so sooner or later they'll have to accept that fact.
I take it you aren't a pilot

This thread is brilliant.
Allegedly, the one on the left was the UAV pilot, the one on the right the sensor operator.
HAHA

It was actually a mobile command unit operating on the US side...
here's the covert mobile GCS version

I'm working on a capstone project for my masters. Currently my research topic is to study the differences between working 8 and 12 hour shifts and how they effect fatigue, mishaps, quality of life, etc for predator ops. I'm not asking for folks to fill out a survey yet. I just need to know what schedules units are working 8s,12 and how many days on/off are in their work week. Private message me if you have time to help me out and I'll give you my NIPR email address. Thanks!
