  1. That's what i figured. My wife and our pets prevent living in billeting. So far they've been unresponsive to my advances for a non-A

Rog. Well, look around man. General rule of thumb is don't live anywhere south of Zuni just outside the base. SE of the base near Eubank and Juan Tabo can be a decent exception to that rule.

In ABQ, find a decent place, in a nice area, and be willing to spend a little extra to keep you, your wife, and your belongings safe. Also, if you don't have one, get a gun and learn how to use it...a good rule for wherever you live IMHO.

  2. Found a furnished place for less that $39 a day here. Opinions on location? Is it good, bad, or am i going to get carjacked before i even set the parking brake?

Dude, that's awfully close (if not in) to the 'war zone'. Do some research on crime statistics in ABQ and you'll see what I'm talking about and probably reconsider.

Do one of the two things: 1) Stay at billeting...they're pretty nice and a lot of the rooms are more like small 1 bedroom apartments (minus the kitchen). 2) Show up to ABQ, get a room at billeting, and talk to some of the studs currently there and ask those living off base where they stay.

  3. From the "DoD Financial Management Regulation" dated June 2010:

"A member may not carry forward a leave balance of more than 60 days into a new fiscal year except during the period October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2013, when 75 days may be carried forward or when entitled to Special Leave Accrual (SLA), as outlined below..."

    Link

So as I read this reg, you currently have until 30 Sep 2013 to bring your leave balance down to 60 days. As always, if I have misread something, please let me know--especially being that I have 15+ days of use/loose on top of my 75 days.

  4. I want to believe so badly that losing your wings AND getting discharged over this is justified, even as an effort to make people pucker up before they think to execute airshows/public displays below published guidance. I just can't say that it is warranted, though, especially the discharge. A huge fit over something negligible in the grand scheme considering worse shit happens daily. Who knows though, after all the ass-pain this guy has been through, I am sure he was happy to get a free pass out of his ADSC.

You must have not read the article:

...and he will separate from the Air Force of his own accord

AFT also ran the story saying that the guy was already planning to retire, so he is not getting 'discharged' under the classical sense. He is also not getting a 'free pass' out of his ADSC--don't know where you came up with that one.

As for nature of the incident, he needed to be disciplined and I'm sure the punishment could have been much more severe. I'm not a lawyer, and correct me if I'm wrong...but you always have the right to refuse a CC's Article 15 and go before a Court Martial.

  5. Actually, SWMBO quit worrying about other women years ago; now she's more concerned about the number of guns I have (she thinks they total around 20! You can bet your ass I don't correct her on that! :nob:)

    It's a good thing she doesn't go to baseops.net!

  6. So, does Natalie Portman get naked in No Strings Attached? Because if not, I have little to no desire to see a romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher-Moore.

Sadly no. But not too a bad movie.

  7. I just picked up a new Glock 27 with a set of trijicon night sights for my CCW piece. I think ten rounds of .40 should do the trick for most social encounters. Time to pass the S&W .38 to the Mrs.

Nice choice. I was looking at the Glock 27 last year--felt and shot fairly well, but the S&W M&P40c felt so much better in my hand and shot really well...plus I get that whopping 1 extra round.

What kind of holster are planning to use?

  8. seriously? Scotty Karate is in that slot now, but he's due to be re-blued this summer, so our functional at AFPC should be handing out the next assignment there fairly soon (summer VML). There are Navy, Marine (I think, we have a female USMC pilot in our SQ right now, so I assume it's reciprocal), UK, French, German exchanges for 60 drivers that I know of. Huey side of the house I have no idea.

Hueys have the Marine Corps and German Exchange.

  9. I've purchased from two different mil exchange shops and they want to see your PCS orders. So going there TDY may not work.

    Out

You're exactly right man...fortunately I'm stationed in New Mexico. I've already purchased a firearm from Holloman when I was TDY there in the past. Thanks for keeping me honest though.

  10. HeloDude

I forgot, someone told me that a some of the BXs that carry guns (Barksdale, Davis-Monthan, Dyess, Eglin, Eielson, Ellsworth, Elmendorf, Hill, Holloman, Little Rock, Minot, Nellis, Offutt, Tinker and Whiteman AFBs; and Ft Belvoir, Ft Campbell, Ft Drum, Ft Hood, Ft Knox, Ft Leavenworth, Ft Polk, Ft Riley, Ft Rucker, Ft Stewart and Ft Wainwright, in case you'd forgotten) have Saiga-12s for $549. I think Elgin and D-M were mentioned, but can't say for sure.

The prices aren't the greatest, but no sales tax helps, as does some of those AAFES coupons if you can score 'em!

    Cheers! M2

Thanks for the update on the Saiga-12! I called the Holloman AAFES gun shop this week and they told me their supplier carries them, just none in stock but will be getting some in soon, which works because I'll be TDY there in Feb. He didn't give me a price but I'll get that next week and decide if I want to wait to get it from the BX. If it doesn't look good then I'll look into getting it from Bud's, Gunbroker, or some other place similar.

Awesome pics you posted from your buddy Alex--have you talked to him and gotten an idea of what his price is? I'm assuming these are with accessories?

  11. Back on the real topic here of actual guns...M2, did you ever buy a Saiga 12? I did a search and you mentioned a couple years back that you were wanting a Saiga 12--ever get one?

I'm seriously looking into getting one here in the next couple of weeks and so far really like what I see. You can't beat a Russian made semi-automatic 12 gauge...especially with a 30rd drum!

What are your thoughts on the gun? I've heard from a few people that it doesn't shoot birdshot too well. What's a good price for one of these in your opinion? I've been looking at Bud's and Gunbroker trying to get a reasonable idea of what to spend. Thanks!

  12. Loughner was almost immediately tackled by victims. While I wasn't at the scene, the news coverage here in Tucson has been non-stop. I'm glad no one tried to shoot him-I suspect more people would have been injured. There was no time to unholster, aim, and fire. A gun battle in a crowded shopping center parking lot would have been a worse scenario. Tackling seems like it was the best resolution.

Grant it, I don't know anymore of the situation, but do you CCW? I'm hearing reports from the Sheriff (as I type this) that he emptied out a full extended mag and was attempting to reload. I don't know about others (M2, Timbonez, etc can also comment), but I can draw fairly quickly and get a few rounds off...and I'm sure I can do that before a guy can empty a full 31 round magazine.

Now I'm not trying to say you're wrong (or right for that matter), and I definitely wasn't there, nor faced in that specific situation, but that's the whole reason people carry...to defend themselves and others around them. And I feel confident if I'm close to someone (7-10 yards) that I can draw, aim, and fire in less time than it takes a guy to get 31 rounds off.

But like you mentioned, thank God there were courageous people (I heard it was a female that got the gun) that had the guts to tackle this guy before he could reload and do it again.

  13. You have a forum to say anything you want in regards to this tragedy, and this is what you choose to say? Disgusting.

Yes, you are exactly right...because no one else is talking about gun control right now based off the incident. Oh wait...look what I found!

Statement from Rep. Carolyn Maloney Regarding yesterday’s tragic events

“While it is too early to come to any conclusions about the causes or consequences of yesterday’s tragic events, it is never too late to reflect on lessons we have learned from earlier such tragedies, and take them to heart.

“Guns kill. And those who glamorize gunplay or worship gun ownership do no service to humanity

    Congresswoman Maloney's Website

If this is going to be brought up as an issue, then you must bring up 2nd Amendment rights. My thoughts and prayers to the families of those slain yesterday and I'll continue to pray for the survivors. It's a shame there wasn't a responsible citizen in the crowd carrying...could have possibly been a less tragic outcome.

  14. Whiteman is selling 'em too. BTW, a Ruger LCP after this 10% off all Ruger "fire arms" is $257 out the door. I'll pick mine up on Friday.

    -9-

That's a pretty good deal on an LCP, but be careful into thinking the BX prices are always going to be the best. There are places here in ABQ that will sell us Glocks, XD's, M&Ps, etc at the law enforcement price which is typically much better than the BX price.

  15. Anybody else planning on increasing their TSP in light of the fact that our taxes might/will all go up 1 Jan 2011 if Congress doesn't extend the current tax rates?

I have max'd out my ROTH IRA for the last 10 years (as well as other investments in a non-tax sheltered account) and have been putting in 3% for TSP (just to put in something) the last 6 years, but now I'm thinking it might be time to do more if the gov't is going to start taking away more of my money. Thoughts?

  16. MBA for sure. They don't want a bunch of geeky engineers screwing up their test pilot program.

I sure hope so! I'll let you guys know here pretty soon if they like my MBA or not. Personally, I think having a strong engineering background from your undergrad coupled with an MBA makes you a more well rounded candidate.

  17. Commander told me a few weeks ago that the results would be released end of the month (and here we are), but another reliable source told me today that they'll be released this December...any other hopefuls out there hearing anything similar?

I'm more anxious about the results of this board than I am my upcoming Major's board!
