  1. I'm also very curious to know what happened. As a former flight safety guy, this one really surprises me. The aircraft is fairly intact, resting on flat terrain and I'm not aware of an airfield anywhere nearby, at least not one that the BACN would operate out of. RIP to the crew...I've known a number of guys who've deployed to do that mission. It was often seen as an easy, "nice" deployment where one can rack up flying hours. Tragic that this happened. And to the users on here trying to get into a slap-fight with fellow forum users for merely wondering out loud what could have happened...so long as no one is revealing OPSEC info or being disrespectful (as stated before), so what? It's a military aviation forum. Go find other things to feel important about.
  2. From a source who was in the PRANG talking to those in the unit...sounds like they lost a motor on takeoff. Tried to bring it back and lost it.

  5. They reduced the 41st to a 2.0 crew ratio, and the 327th is manned at a .5 crew ratio. That way the manning numbers work and they don't have a million folks trying to get one sortie a month to stay current.
  6. The 50th will be at zero manpower by April, and will be inactivated at the end of the FY. The 913th has most of their flight crew currently in JMATS or graduated. They are already flying with the 19th AW. Over the remainder of this FY, they will form a classic association with the 19th AW. The active duty squadrons have reduced manning to accommodate the Reservists. They will retain their own chain of command, but will fly 19AW iron. Eventually (likely this summer), they will manage their own flying schedule. At some point, they may get their own iron, but there's really nothing concrete on that at this time. And if anyone is interested in full-time employment, they have 5 ART vacancies right now. Many ARTs have left to go to the airline world. There are also TR positions available.

  8. Are we seriously comparing copilot mentalities?
  9. The ARC already operates the C-17 and has for some time. It certainly wouldn't be a new mission to either AFRC or the ANG. MS and TN already operate the C-17. WV and NY will get the jets in the near future if they already haven't started flying them. AFRC has a C-17 wing at March and WPAFB, along with the associate units at TCM, CHS and WRI. The idea COS or CLT could get the C-17 mission isn't unfathomable.
  10. Considering how "holier than thou" the NFL has become, it's a little more than annoying that they decided "we'll salute the troops...but that's gonna cost you some money". The NFL as a whole is one of the most profitable businesses out there these days. Hard to believe they needed over $5 million to "salute" the troops.
  11. I'm wearing my morale patches with no apologies from now on if they are OK having dudes run around in heels in their uniforms.
  12. If that's the case then why have any associate reserve units? AFRC is trying to close units with their own facilities. Pope is probably one of the most expensive to keep open along with those that operate Air Reserve Bases. Pope is a little different because the AF winds up paying for most of the airfield costs...and they don't want to keep paying for the Army's airfield. They like AFRC units located on active AFB or other joint facilities. Keeping LR means keeping an AFRC unit on an active base. Closing LR would save them the manpower billets but little else. It's chump change compared to the other stand-alone units. It would be moving in the wrong direction as far as saving money for the long haul. If the 913th associates, the OSS goes away along with a few ART positions. Edit: The OSS would go away, but the 913th would keep an OSF that would integrate into the 19th OSS. Full-time ART billets would be reduced to around 5 pilot positions, and the maintenance footprint would be reduced.
  13. That's the current COAs. Regardless of what happens to BIX and POB, the 913th will be a J unit...likely without iron as an associate.
  14. It was never a comfortable feeling having CBP agents treat you as if you're a potential perp just for driving down a highway. I'm not defending PYB because as rumor has it, he has a reputation for being just a little assholish. But again, it never felt right handing them my CAC card with my two toddler boys in the back coming from a Big Bend camping trip being quizzed why I was driving from that area and why I had camping gear in back. I really, really wanted to be smart and say "you DO realize there's a National Park not far from here, yes?"
  15. Time to take the gloves off. I think we're averaging, what....10-12 sorties per day? Come on, an AETC training wing sends up more sorties than that. It's time to slam these assholes with a sledgehammer. Relentless, constant barrage day in and day out. If it's armed and doesn't belong to an ally, then it dies. Period. These guys would be out of business in a matter of weeks (or at least driven back across the border with Syria) if we actually put forth a real effort. The best thing our leadership could say tomorrow is "Jordan, we're joining you. Gloves are off". Then maybe some of the other Arab allies would step up. Most of those countries are great followers. They just need someone to stand up and lead.
  16. Having been in both branches, neither the Army nor the Air Force win awards for doing things the smart way these days...in my book at least. Both are being rapidly overtaken with institutional retardism.
  17. Maryland getting Js isn't a done deal. It's just the latest "roadmap" out there...not that it matters because it seems like they redraw the roadmap every freakin' year. Just a few more years and I'll be retired...
  18. I flew for the Army once upon a time and I echo the sentiment that the A-10 belongs in the USAF. The Army warrant officer fraternity was fun to be in, and flying helicopters low and slow was a blast...but the Army is organizationally handicapped to utilizing an aircraft like the A-10. Back in the Clinton days, we'd have our budget cut every FY because the Engineer and Infantry brigades that ran our state (I was ARNG) didn't understand why an aviation unit would need so much money...only when we had tons of guys going non-current did they transfer money back to us. It was always a budgetary mess, and we were always treated like ground vehicles. The command at the top really had no understanding of how aircraft were used.
  19. It's like flying a Cessna Skyhawk...except with two engines, folding gear and controllable pitch prop. No big deal at all. SE stuff is pretty benign if you get on the rudder right away and have your feathering procedure down pat. But flying characteristics...just like any other light GA airplane. I got 6 hours in a Beech Duchess before my ATP check...I was pretty comfortable with it by then.
  20. Envoy is probably on the way to becoming an AAG services company. That was a rumor I had heard from others around here...that eventually it'll be just a bunch of express ticket agents and rampers and the flying will be moved to PSA and Piedmont. They are getting new airplanes, but I think eventually both the working environment there (unable to attract anyone) and the overall staffing issues at the regionals in general will see the end of what was American Eagle.
  21. Montana did get two Super Es (essentially E-models with H-model -15 engines) and they have H1s. Arguably the oldest Herks in the fleet...but most of those got new wing boxes a few years ago and still have substantial life in them, so I don't see them going to the boneyard really soon. I think eventually you'll see the ARC slowly convert to the J. Some units will probably get C-17s as the need for strat airlift subsides (hopefully). Some of the more heavily tasked ARC units will get Js first. Maryland is actually the first unit to receive them and is slated to get their jets at the end of this decade. More will likely follow. Other Herk units will probably close...I know AFRC and HAF have wanted to shut down units like Pittsburgh for years.
  22. Still up in the air. USAF still wants the airplanes at LRF. Congress directed that the USAF must submit a report detailing why they are moving airframes and must wait at least 60 days past the date of that report before they can move aircraft. The 913th has developed a very tentative plan on getting people trained in case they (AF and Congress) pull the trigger. Nothing solid, though. Hopefully something more meaningful will be announced in February or March.
  23. The former DO is working on his ATP as we speak. The old CC went back to being Chief Nav and is almost ready to retire. The new guys were already in the unit and are good dudes...and really the only other two leadership-ready ARTs still around. Edited to make a distinction between the current DO and the former DO.
  24. After people like Rhat and CZ, there's nowhere else to go but up.
