New ABU's
Yeah, if you're a Marine. WTFO? I hate the 8-point. I wore it on day-one my first deployment. After that I threw it in the trash, went to the BX, and bought a boonie. If you're in the desert, you need a hat with shade, period. It still surprises me how many shoe clerks stick with the stupid ass 8-point. A word to the wise, the jar top doesn't make you look like a warrior when you're overweight/underbuilt and have it smashed down on your head like a beanie with the brim pointing up at a 45 degree angle. If Big Blue ever tried to take away the boonie, I'd use the shoeclerk mojo against them and start barking about it being a "safety issue". Not to mention the 8-point doesn't fit into any of the pockets on a flight suit. HD

Damn, you beat me to it. I was trying to find that icon for my post earlier, but no success. The google is strong with you. HD

CSAF Considers A-10 COIN Squadron
Standard AFSOC. Agree on all points. Like you said before, you've got to have your shit wired when supporting SOF. HD

And the best part...you revived it for a reason! As opposed to the "It's been a few months so here's a thread bump" in the '08 Elections thread. HercDude wins. HD

CSAF Considers A-10 COIN Squadron
Copy. So, in your opinion, is this something that needs to happen? HD

I have a hard time believing that. In other words, he drank the kool aid and has no idea what the program costs. HD

CSAF Considers A-10 COIN Squadron
Take a pilot out of an AC/MC-130 or a chopper and send them to IFF and Hog FTU? I doubt it. HD

CSAF Considers A-10 COIN Squadron
Seriously, what's the benefit of moving some Hogs over AFSOC? Hogs already support spec ops and kill insurgents. Where is the need for a change of ownership? HD

I'm a little like CH in that I'm biased, but when I was a kid I loved hearing my dad tell stories about the A-1s coming back with empty pylons and mud on the underside of the fuselage. HD

AC-130 Gunship info
Driver pretty much covered it. If you want to go to AFSOC herks, you have to track to T-44s. Herks drops in the T-1 pipeline are few and far between. Not to mention I have only once heard of an AFSOC bird dropping in T-1s and it wasn't a gunpig. T-44s will guarantee you herks. After that it's up to the needs of the AF. Some classes have a boat load of AFSOC birds and some have none. Generally you will see one gunpig per class. With the ramp up going on in the AFSOC world, it may improve your chances. If one doesn't get dropped, no big deal. You'll still be in a herk and will have opportunity to crosstrain. Track to T-44s, kick ass in Corpus, and hope the drop works out. HD

At least you said "vertical stabilizer". You could have said "What is that there thingamajig up on the tail wing"? Small victories. HD

Performance Report (OPR/EPR) info
I think the new form is a step in the right direction. Instead of being OPR-filler, fluff bullets will now show a weak OPR. HD

Thanks for the update. The last time I was at the rock the rumor had been floating around. I guess someone had their head out of their ass. Sims suck. HD

How so? I'm talking about their ability in the right seat, not how good they'll be when they upgrade. Not completely. I think the MPD program is good in that it loosens up the restrictions placed on CPs after the Evansville accident. But pro in the left and tac in the right is only a step in the right direction. Our initial qual guys need to go back to right seat training, IMHO. There is nothing gained by having a co fly pro in the left seat. It takes all of three flights for a traditional right-seater to get used to flying in the left seat. IMHO the best way to do business is to train our new co's in the right seat, but let them fly 3-engines, no-flaps, etc. I don't particuarly think we need an AC school at all, in-house upgrade for a traditional CP is no big trick. The problem is logistics. With the ops tempo there's no way to do it. HD

Good point, is the ARC not going in uprade the last legacy CPs in-house? The results so far have been positive. The syllabus changes are turning out a better product, but not the best product. HD

A classic. My other favorite is when the civies come to see the planes leave the next day. Crank up, taxi by them, and watch them cover their ears from the noise. Wait until you're just about to pass and then wave at them and watch them take their hands off their ears and wave back. Never fails. HD

-A pro checkride is accomplished in the simulator? (for CP and AC?) Affirm. Pro checks in the sims for initial qual and AC upgrade. They used to have a "landing check" in the plane. But the last I heard, the sims were upgraded and landings are graded in the sim now. -There is a new MPD syllabus? MPDs do their pro in the left seat and tac in the right. -What about copilots upgrading to AC? I wouldn't worry too much about it. The last of the true right-seaters will be upgrade-complete within six months. HD
