  1. A guy on airwarriors washed out due to family reasons, not sure what that means, and he went back and became a nav.

Scoobs, if the guy washed out of UPT and then ended up going to Nav training, that's normal. Guys that wash out of UPT are normally eligible to compete for Nav training unless their academic scores sucked. Again, reference 36-2205v4.

  2. Was reacently told that the AF doesn't FAIP older guys - is this true? I had heard that Captains going through UPT don't get FAIP, but not the older guys comment. As an older 2nd LT going through UPT, I'd like to know what others have heard or experienced. Is there an age limit to FAIP? Who usually gets FAIP?

There is no age limit to FAIP. There are multiple prior-E dudes that are now FAIPs. The Captain comment is correct. See 36-2205v4.

  3. Yokota is pretty calm, you might fly 5 hours a month and you will have to fight for a 2 month deployment , which may happen once while you are here. You are probably gone a few days every few months. Just FYI incase you were pondering base choices for 130s.

So dudes are getting 60 hours per year at Yokota (except for those that get the deployment)?

  4. Exactly.

I'm not talking about accidentally landing at an uncontrolled field, and I'm not talking about landing on a dirt strip in dirka-dirka stan. I'm talking about filing to and landing at an uncontrolled CONUS field - the subject of this thread.

Scheduled mission to land at Dannelly field to return F-16 maintainers home from a deployment. Tower was closed (early morning arrival). We landed without issue...without tower, SOF or an O-6 sitting there making sure we did what we were trained to do. Although I will admit my Co-Pilot was concerned that the tower wasn't there to say "cleared to land".

  5. Best reason for a hook I've heard about this year was for a stud not writing his name correctly in his dash 1. Bam, 88 ride, $1600 of gas, and another jet/ip taken (and 88 pilots are flt/cc or higher).

Doesn't pass the sanity check. Syllabus would call for a ground eval only. I take it you heard this from a friend of a friend that was in the other room.

  6. I hope so but every time I tried to get a LM involved in the aviation aspect of the C-17 (how to read an IAP, interpret a PFD, etc) they literally did not care. If they want to start making changes they need to get the loads more involved at Altus or up the education requirements (along the lines of ENGs or FCCs) to enhance CRM in that community.

That's unfortunate. Most of the LMs I've flown with we're more than happy to assist when given a little instruction. Our squadron provided training to help with confirmations checks (configurations and airport environment... Especially when on NVGs). We also trained them to do chart reading during low level flying.

  7. I definitely fell into the "walking to and from buffalo wild wings" category. During UPT, I subsisted primarily on a diet of hard liquor and Reese Cups. I did the breathing exercise and strain my first couple of G exs then realized I didn't need to, so I just faked it by making the stupid breathing sounds the rest of the way through T-6s. Granted, we only went to about 7 gs, but I never had any ill effects. Maybe those last 2 gs are a motherfucker, I don't know. The guys who were in great shape were also the same ones puking their guts out. The best way to test G tolerance is probably to actually test G tolerance. If only we had a couple of centrifuges ...

And I would argue you missed the point of why we teach students to G strain in the T-6. It has more to do with teaching habit patterns for those that might end up in an aircraft that the G strain needs to be instinctive. Fighter FTUs shouldn't be wasting time teaching students to G strain correctly. They should have learned and practiced in SUPT.

  8. Best thread to ask this question, I guess.

I'm looking at the timeline regarding first, second and third looks for school. When is it the best time to move after my PRF is written to ensure I can compete at all three looks?

Do I need two years on station before my first look? Or do I need one year on-station before my first look... giving me two years on-station when I PCS'd.

One year on station so you could move the following summer with no waiver required. So ideally you move right before the board actually meets but after your PRF has been written. Of course you'll have to hope the base you move too will push a first look dude for school.

  9. Interesting statistics. Someone really has a hard-on for academic degrees....they really must think it makes a better leader than someone who got a commander's direct recommendation with a DP. I really hope there is more to it than just that. At least tell me their PRFs were poorly written.

I really don't get it...I just don't see the correlation between AADs and leadership...especially at that level.

Based on what I saw as an OG Exec several years ago, it wouldn't surprise me if a commander was trying to hide a shitty record with a DP and the board figured it out.

  10. HI, we are pcsing to Laughlin in August and were wondering if most people are living on or off base at the moment. We have one baby, and my husband will be an IP. Any input would be appreciated.

It's all about personal preference as an IP. Lots of IPs live on base and quite a few live off base. Depends what you are looking as far as housing size, yard, etc.

  11. Ahhh, I have seen that as well. Generally, no bottom 50% to T-38 with a few exceptions. "Leadership" can request it,but it's generally met with resistance, but sometimes it happens, especially with a dude with a great attitude. That dude usually ends up with the pred/MC12/AWACS, but they graduate. Only speaking as a former T-38 flight commander, and only 2-3 years ago.

Totally depends on the group and wing leadership. Current guidance is that it's acceptable. As far as what they get... Last XL drop had 1 fighter and everyone else got the aircraft you mentioned. Drop before that was only a little different.

  12. No joy on a search for this information..

Question about progression from T-6s to T-38s for a guy picked up by a guard fighter unit. What exactly is the standard that the student is held to in order to track T-38s?

I've known people who have been forced to track T-1s for performance reasons, and I even heard from some people that you have to be top X percentile in your UPT class to progress, is there any solid information out there regarding this? Any difference in standards at ENJJPT?

It's an old question but it wasn't answered correctly. Go read the 36-2205v4. There is no top 50% requirement to track T-38s. Leadership can use your low MASS score to decide your track, but they don't have too. They can also "force" dudes into a track if they feel it would be best.

  13. Putting tax-free earnings in a TSP (or 401k, or traditional IRA) is pointless. You're not deferring any taxes, you have to pay taxes on your earnings anyway, and you're preventing yourself from touching that money until you have old balls. Just put that money in a brokerage account; it's the same.

The way that reads, it looks like you can't contribute to a Roth if you literally have $0 of taxable income (which I didn't know). If you still want to fund it, you might want to look into interest income (SDP is $1k to start) or capital gains.

Contributions to your TSP that are made in months you were in a combat zone remain tax free. The earnings would be taxed, but not the original contribution when you withdraw it at a later date.

  14. I'm pretty sure this guy was guard, since the slide said he's going to Kelly AFB and not Luke.

Does anyone have the CBM drop?

    Nope. He's an AD Lt.

    Rest of XL drop.

Here we're the aircraft dropped (don't have the bases or whether they were t1 or t38 students).

    C5 x 4

    F16 (Active Duty)

    E8

    E3 x 2

    C17 x 3

    AC130

    C130

    B1

    MC12 x 2

    KC135 x 2

    T6 x 2

    KC 10 x 2 (I think there were 2)

  15. Because the dude that got pulled to fill that exec duty probably wants fly at some point (assuming he or she is a flyer). I've been a group exec and worked on a wing staff... You think the squadron gets a lot of BS taskers... You should see the shit that comes down from numbered AF and MAJCOM's. If you only have one dude working the exec job, that dude doesn't get to fly (at least not at the AMC base I was at). We had multiple execs so that someone could get out of the office.
