  1. Has anyone else done the cyber awareness challenge formerly known as information assurance? I think it changed in October-new FY and all. Who dreams this shit up? And fire extinguisher training for all my friends?

I know I should have gotten over CBTs long ago, but wtf is up with the latest iterations? How do we find money to keep changing them?

  2. That's a fact. I suppose I'm just being overly optimistic that now, when money is an (the) issue, we would be smarter in how we do stuff. Naive I know. But it makes it really tough for a herk guy to guess what the future holds/what to tell the young pups who are still in the 60/53/61 with no JMATS slot.

  3. Before we go too far with "the sky is falling" concerns: how many times has AMC discussed getting rid of the airdrop mission for c130's? Which hasn't happened (yet). AMC does lots of dumb shit (Alaska TFI) but why would we start up the 50th TFI at LRF this year so we can shut it down next year?

  4. I agree with the vast minority comment, but not on leaders, but on the stories in this group. I believe the vast minority of each story has some truth. I believe the problem with your AF is the entitlement your young pilots seem to have. "This is why I got out of AMC". A good leader would suck it up, try to make it to a position where you can make these changes. Instead you run and leave your "wingman" to endure. To the vast majority complaining on this forum, reflect on your own integrity and ask yourself what you can do to make it better instead of complaining on a public forum.

    Don't have time to pick apart your statement right now, so I'll go with this;

    Go away.

  5. That doesn't make any god damn sense.

Yes, the AF values SOS in-res DG, fine. PME done right has value for a professional force. But they should not and I'd argue do not value "practice bleeding" although it's basically being enforced in every Wing.

There is absolutely no connection between doing SOS in correspondence and having the opportunity to get DG out of the in-res program, none. A Wing could send a guy to SOS in-res without having to complete the correspondence program TOMORROW if they wanted.

If this was the "satisfactory" answer you got from your SQ/CC then whew, I'm sorry.

Whoa. This was me actually getting my sq/cc to say that practice bleeding was dumb. It wasn't his point that doing it (sts) online would help me be a DG. His point was that doing it online was a prerequisite (from the WG) to go in res. so I asked why I should go in res if the b ox was checked already and his answer was that the point of going in res was to try and be a DG.

Worded differently (and more to the point of the discussion I had with my sq/cc) if I've "checked the box by doing it online" why do I need to spend more time TDY away from my family to go in res?". His response to that question was that there's no pooint to SOS in res if you're not going to be a DG.

This discussion wasn't about whether the WG "could" send me without correspondence. It was about why do both. The connection between correspondence and in residence DG is only that the WG required online complete before consideration to go in res.

We would all prefer that the answer be one or the other. But in reality it's not.

  6. Also, my flight commander there said that in March SOS is going back to 5 or 6 weeks.

    Ha! Classic.

I'll show my ignorance-how do we have money to keep flying but we don't have money to pay dudes TDY to maxwell? I mean, I like this outcome as much as the next guy but its all funny money right?

  7. Completely agree! CSAF was supposed to make a visit to our organization and do a Q&A with all of the AF types this summer. The POS shoe O-6 that is the Sr AF guy sent out an e-mail 2 weeks in advance making it mandatory that all AF members send him at least one question to ask CSAF so he could "properly vette the questions for appropriateness" and then notify who would be selected to ask a question. As stated earlier it is the O-5 to O-7 level that is mostly hampering progress that the Boss is trying to make... almost like the crappy GS-7 secretary that refuses to do things the Commander wants them to do because they have been around long enough to know that all they have to do is wait the Commander out and he/she will be gone soon enough.

Those one on one sessions with any boss can be extremely productive when there isn't the shit screen middle management PC police there. I've had more than a few occasions where I told my supervisor something didn't work repeatedly and was told to shut up and color because they didn't want their boss to think they were complaining or because "that's the way we've always done it", but then got the O-6 or O-7 alone and when asked about the subject I said "Sir, this is stupid... why do we do it this way?"... and the Boss completely agreed and the policy was immediately changed. As much as we all bitch about the terrible managers out there we do actually have some good leaders who sometimes never get to hear the "this is stupid" from the field. They can't change it if they don't know about it.

I've been fortunate with my Sq/cc's. Some if them have been very receptive to my questions-it's easy to come across as sport bitching when it's with the bros, but phrased appropriately, I've been very satisfied (sts) with the answers I've gotten over a beer.

Ex: why the F do I have to do SOS online so I can compete to go in res? This was a lengthy discussion, but the answer that got me to shut up was that its to compete to be a DG and like it or not, the AF values SOS DG.

For the record, I was not a DG. And this example probably sounds lame on al gores internets, but the discussion that led to that was exactly what I needed to hear from my CC as a 1LT/young captain.

  8. Curtis LeMay meets the Common Sense fairy.

The AF still hasn't figured out that endless layers of middle management is inefficient and hugely unhelpful to implementing any kind of organizational change.

Serious question: what does the NAF do? I've been to SOS and I honestly can't answer that one...

  9. Disco nav touched on it (sts). I asked the sarc at my last sapr refresher how many sexual assaults come from the OG. The answer was 3 or 4 over his 10 year tenure ( out of 112 cases). The point is that at a base with 9 flying squadrons, the numbers show it's not that big of an issue. Should we help the victims? Absolutely. And to those who claim it's under reported I say prove it. I've been called a rapist since day 1 when I showed up at the academy and I'm tired of it.

All of the data that we're quoted is how Sex assault is such a prevalent problem in the DoD or AF wide. Is any OG immune? Absolutely not but I don't think we're focusing in the right place.

As for restricted reporting, I've never gotten a straight answer from a sarc-does a restricted report affect someone's flying status? What if they're on PRP?

  10. I watch how leadership operates. The person who didn't even work on their AAD at all is getting out. Why send him in residence just to fill a slot when someone from another squadron could have gone instead? This didn't make sense to me since the slots at my base are limited due to a large number of CGOs. I just don't like to screw people over and the individual in question is not a top tier person in the squadron.

I know it's hard to decide who goes versus who stays. That's why I like to seek out knowledge on the process so I don't get it wrong if I have to do it someday.

Dude, really? The LT or first year capt who doesn't have a masters is "getting out"? I hope you don't ever have to make real decisions some day.

  11. As always, luck and timing are everything. Wonder if I can hang on long enough to get close enough to my Adsc to be able to palace chase. Any new rumors on how much Adsc big blue might be willing to waive? We keep hearing "liberal palace chase policies" but no one has any idea what that means.
