  1. Correct. Your best bet, if it is a long TDY enroute, is to take the $39/night and go find a furnished apartment that allows pets. I did that for a 4 month TDY enroute and saved about $1K versus staying in the pet-friendly TLF where you pay an extra $10 per night out of pocket.

I'm heading to Altus and one of the apts. there has $600 pet fee for the duration of my stay (17 PIQ), is there a way to get that incorporated into my rent in such a way that my $39/night will cover it or do I just show finance the bill and they pay it. Not sure how finance reimburses this stuff, so any insight is appreciated.

  2. You are retired, I am not. You do not have to execute the mission, I do. I think I can safely assume that you are not currently in command of a combat unit at any echelon. You might have been in command, but not now. And a warm welcome to yesterday to you, internet poster.

We can only hope you aren't in command of anything either. Good god man how naive/low SA do you have to have to call Rainman a retired guy that knows nothing? I may be just a dumb LT but even I'm smart enough to know just cause he isn't in anymore doesn't mean he forgot everything and from what I gather he has many friends who are still AD.

  3. Have you looked at crossbreedholsters.com?

They have some very nice XD IWB holsters. I've got two of them for my pistols.

+1 for crossbreed holsters, had mine for almost a year now and the quality and comfort is beyond superb.

  4. exchange war stories with shoe clerks with bronze stars....

    FIFY

I saw a fist fight break out during ASBC between one flights' uber moto LT trying to organize flight PT at 0500 (!) 4 days a week and an Academy dude who was waging a jihad on his liver. Good times at Air University.

I'm more thankful everyday I never had to attend that AD extension of ROTC.

  5. How can the AF be certain I would finish my PPL in time before my IFS date? Someone has to know what this reg includes, i.e. APTs that have their PPL BEFORE 1 Oct are exempt, those who get it after are not and must attend IFS?

You should think this through better, when you get your RIP for IFS if you don't have your PPL you go to Doss.

Also, shelling out 5 grand as a brand new LT coming out of a stupidly expensive university isn't going to be the easiest thing for me to do in the next six months, not impossible...just not ideal either. Don't get me wrong, becoming a pilot is my #1 priority and I would love nothing more than to spend every weekend on causal status flying my happy little butt off at a civilian school, but letting the AF pay for it (and if I can hack it) has been my plan of action all along especially because this news of holding a PPL didn't come into the picture for me until a day or so ago.

See the post above yours to answer this question, 4 weeks at a washout course or free pass on one hurdle of the UPT process.

Letting all these APTs run out and get PPLs might save the AF some $ most definitely, but it should not be the norm and I think there are still benefits to be introduced to military flying even if it is in the DA-20. I've had many friends that struggled through IFS and somehow made it happen and now are in fighter airframes and some made it through and still DOR out of UPT.

People who have more experience and get paid more to make those decisions.

I know I want to fly and I know I can do it, but don't feel like I need to run away from Doss and stay on casual until my UPT date by obtaining a PPL. I honestly hate hearing so many APTs talking about how much IFS sucks, (maybe mostly from the CSO peers I know) but seriously...just like Smokey said, there are WAY worse places to be in life. Spending a month in Colorado earning my pay and learning to actually fly the way the AF wants me to is nothing in the grand scheme of things to start the opportunity of a lifetime to earn wings.

Again if you can bypass IFS and go straight to UPT the process to get eliminated from UPT is more extensive than IFS. You haven't been to IFS so stop talking about how much it does or doesn't suck; I'll tell you it sucks, its stressful, and you most likely won't enjoy your time there (except maybe getting plastered on the weekend). As mentioned before its Initial Flight Screening not training, the small bit of Air Force flying which from what I remember what just a simplified version Air Force traffic pattern doesn't exactly give you a head start.

IFS has its merits for the Air Force not exactly for you as the student.

  6. I think what we are seeing is something his predecessor did not do (and is the mark of a good leader)-- he is OBSERVING before actually changing a damn thing. The worst leaders are the guys who immediately get into a new job and start changing things around.

2 on this and it is probably not (however easy the targets) a great idea in the political realm of that position to Day 1 undo the some of the most memorable policies of the previous commander.

  7. When SQ/CCs include the words "SOS" and "AAD" in pre-deployment briefs (directed at first time deployers, i.e., co-pilots), then you know the train has come off the rails.

And yes, I've seen it first hand in different squadrons with different commandersFat chicks.....It unfortunately has become the new norm USAF wide. From someone going through a few MWS's now and the different leadership it is all the same...Get working on AAD and ready for SOS, and don't forget to do your bake sales! All the time trying to learn your mws. The real focus has gotten too far out of hand.

Ran across a bunch of CRO, combat controllers and Special Tact. Candidates here at Fairchild. These are 2nd Lt. And They are still going through the pipeline to even earn their beret and guess what they were talking about? Where they were getting their masters degree from.

  8. Most surgeons won't perform LASIK until you're 25, as your eyes are still changing.

Really? that's funny because I have more friends than I can count on two hands (myself included) who got Lasic/PRK at 19-21 years old. Most Surgeons require your vision to be stable for 1-2 years at that age before they will operate.

    Edit: typing on iPad

  9. Got chiefed the other day (well it was SMSgt'd, but who cares), walking through a parking lot to my car. The SMSgt was parking his motorcycle, he shut it off and called out "excuse me sir". I walked over to him, knew it was about me having my sleeves pushed up since it was 105 degrees outside. He got off his motorcycle, snapped to the position of attention and saluted, he then very courteously asked me to pull down my sleeves. I pulled them down, he thanked me and told me to have a good day and we parted ways. That is the way NCOs should act not yelling across a chow hall.

  10. Why yes they can--for DoD Employees. DOD Civilian employee travel is governed by the JTR. Specifically for HHT, that is para C5600.

Can AD, Guard, and Reserved uniformed members be reimbursed, NO.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure what "DoD Employees" covered.

  11. Question for FG:

I know PTDY isn't paid but I ran across this which confused me. It seems to indicate that house hunting trips can be reimbursed and I read posts in other threads talking about being reimbursed per diem rates.

    0607 HOUSEHUNTING TRIPS

If authorized in their travel orders, DoD employees may make househunting trips, not to

    exceed 10 consecutive days. The employee and spouse can travel together or separately;

however, the cost cannot exceed one round trip for travel together. The number of days

househunting that the employee uses does not limit the number of days for the spouse, (i.e., the

employee can take 4 consecutive days and the spouse could still use up to a total of 10 days.)

Advances and payment for househunting trips are based on the prescribed per diem rate.
