    Definitely not doing the diet it suggests, but I am dieting for sure. Altus is basically post-upt fat camp for me. Tony Horton gets annoying pretty quickly but the workouts are great.

    I am on the third week of p90x... its pretty amazing. First week made me so sore I could barely walk. I've lost about 10lbs and 3-4 inches around my waist already.

    Thread Revival... I spent the last half hour reading this thread in its entirety and couldn't help but notice the downward trend of the experiences with USAA. I've had USAA for the last two years and have all my checking/savings/investments/IRA/insurances with them, and so far have been pretty pleased. I'm about to PCS back home after UPT and am looking to buy a house. USAA's rates are currently around 4.75% for a 30 yr fixed, which seems like a pretty good deal, but they do have pretty high closing costs. I'm wondering if I am correct in thinking that USAA might be more inclined to loan a person like me (perfect credit, but high student loan burden) because they understand the military pay structure better than, lets say, B of A. B of A does no closing cost, no point mortgages, but I think would be more skeptical of my financial picture than USAA, which might make it worth it for me to go with them despite the high closing costs. Anybody had any experiences like this? Also, anyone have recent experience with the Mover's Advantage Program? Any recent experiences with their homeowners insurance? Thanks! ~NH
  6. For anyone who knows or has experience with this - I was under the impression that TMO will not ship a POV in the CONUS. In the past few days I've heard from multiple sources that they will ship one with your HHG. Anyone know for sure? I'm contemplating renting an RV to make the PCS home from UPT and if I could get the car shipped it would be a lot less gas money, etc, compared to towing it. Thanks!
  7. My unit let me make up drill days that I would miss during my year at UPT during the break between AMS and UPT. If they are willing to do it for you, that's potentially a lot of drill periods worth of pay, and all I did was study and help out around the squadron. I'm sure if you actually provide some use to them, they'll work with you to help you out.

    Nope. I've been using this program for a while and it does exactly what it describes.... and it's free. "2" on the IPhone and Apple, I converted to a mac desktop a few years ago and held out for the 3G Iphone, and I love them both.

I ran into this particular circumstance a few months ago when I was invited to go in on an airplane with a few friends from college, and the answer is sim time does not count towards anything from an insurance point of view. Usually only total time and PIC time is what they look at. In the GA world, I have a bunch of sim time from college, and we never logged it in the total time column, nor have I logged any of my sim time from UPT as total time either. The general consensus was that it counts for little if anything. Whether or not sim time is valuable in other circumstances, such as trying to get an airline job, I have no idea. I think that might depend more on what kind of sim it was, ie, level d, etc. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that.

The Major who works under the Godfather was one of the cops on Carver's team in the season where they created Hampsterdam. I thought the first two episodes were pretty awesome. The Sergeant Major is hilarious. *Edited* Apparently the second dude I mentioned who plays the Major is actually a no-sh!t Major in the Marine Reserves as well as an actor.   12. If you're looking to live on base, you'd need to be in married housing. Dorms = no pets. Off base it obviously doesn't matter. As far as the long days go, just make sure the dog is house broken or have a place where he can stay outside. I have a 1 yr old yellow lab and no major problems with him so far. ~nh
  13. I went through this EXACT situation a month ago when I PCS'd down here to Columbus. My wife was originally going to remain at my HOR but I got so frustrated w/ the situation that we eventually decided to bring her down here so I'd have a decent place to live. Yes it is privatized, yes you will have to pay rent to live on base, and yes the military does "reimburse" this... through your BAH. This is what they told me, minus the waiver part. I brought it up with the Wing King during our newcomer's brief for the benefit of future FGG's in the similar situation. He said it was completely ridiculous, UOQ is for unaccompanied officers, not unmarried officers. What pissed me off even more was an AD buddy of mine in my class is married and his wife is at another base... and he is in the OUQ. I guess there is no love for the Guard. There is no "official" waiver, but there is a reg that says the base commander has the final say about housing on base.... period dot. Privatized or not. I would recommend working this angle through the people on your base. The only "waiver" that is available is if you have a dependent remaining at your HOR while you PCS. If you maintain a residence and your wife goes with you to Columbus, its Columbus BAH for you. If your wife remains at your HOR, and you come down here, you can get on a waiver for HOR BAH, which I worked through the education guy on my base who sent it up through the pentagon. You can only collect ONE BAH, therefore, any housing expenses you incur at Columbus, on base or off base, will come out of your pocket. So yes, from a certain point of view, the military does reimburse you.... kinda. From what I understand, she must be considered your Dependent for you to collect the BAH w/ Dependent rate... the only BAH that is eligible for the HOR waiver I described above. The best you can hope for under the privatized setup is collecting a HOR BAH and paying both your Mortgage and Columbus rent out of it. This would still be a waiver type situation to get into the UOQ under their current rules. Have your leadership at your base work the problem for you, you'll get nowhere just as I did as a 2LT.   15. I'm trying to plan how much of a reserve of cash I need to leave the wife with for rent, etc, before I head down to Knoxville. I know they have you bring an envelope to mail back your oders to your unit's finance office so you can get paid, but from what I've heard this doesn't always work out. Just wondering if - - anyone has managed to get paid while at AMS - if so how many times (ie, one lump or every 2 weeks) - was BAH I included (30+ day TDY?) - does this qualify for seperation allowance if you have a dependent. Thanks!
  16. Fourth on this... one of the best Vietnam era books i have read. I found parts of it had an almost "apocalypse-now" feel... curious if anyone else got that impression. I also thought the part of him describing how he learned to "dance" with triple A fire was amazing. I ended up getting so into it that I read it in just a few days, definitely worth checking out.
  17. From FC1 at my base to approval by AETC was about 4 months. I'm told this is unusually fast - I was making phone calls every week or so to keep on top of it. Make some phone calls, maybe someone just needs a reminder that you exist.

I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but those were the highlights. Biggest thing is to be yourself, answer honestly, and try not to be nervous. I am positive that the only reason I got the -135 slot is because I was absolutely convinced I had no shot at it going into the interview (was a last minute fill in for someone who had dropped out of the interviews.) I laughed and joked with a bunch of pilots for an hour and walked away with a dream job. Good luck!
  19. I've used logbook pro for a couple of years now. It's a brilliant program, very versatile and can break your flight time down a million different ways. It will even put together an 8710 form for you. Transferring from computer to computer is easy. When I had to do it, I backed up the logbook on the original computer, transferred the backup file to the new computer, restored the backup and was GTG.
  20. Just wondering how the actions of a sibling plays into getting a security clearance. Without going into too many details on an open forum, a sibling of mine was an AD officer who got involved with some shady stuff. If anyone has expertise to lend I'd be happy to discuss it over a PM.   21. I'm not an airline pilot, definitely don't have a few thousand hours. I do however have 250+ hrs, Commercial AMEL ASEL w/ instrument, a degree (almost) in Aviation with a high GPA, and good afoqt/pcsm scores. I was hired off the street by the NHANG. Bottom line is, if you come off the street, you need to put together a really good package and interview very well. I am proof that it's definetly not impossible. Not applying makes it definitely impossible. If you want it, work hard and go for it. Good luck!
