April 4, 200619 yr i was going to say about the original pic.. the last time I saw a flanker that low... it crashed!
April 4, 200619 yr When I saw the title of this thread, I was hoping for a completely different discussion topic. <pulls cranium from gutter>
April 18, 200619 yr Oops. Knew I saw that dust cloud somewhere before. PS. Anyone have any cool C-17 pics. Trying to to get myself excited for July! [ 18. April 2006, 14:51: Message edited by: Sebastian ]
April 18, 200619 yr is the plane modified at all (i.e. have a catch to hook the cable like navy fighters)
April 18, 200619 yr It was a USN crew with some Lockheed tech reps and they only used reverse to stop right by the conning tower.
April 19, 200619 yr Originally posted by bucky60k: and they only used reverse to stop right by the conning tower. A litte off. They went into ground idle right before touchdown (still airborne) and then reversed on the deck. Originally posted by Sebastian: Ever do it? Ummmmm.....No. Originally posted by Sebastian: is the plane modified at all (i.e. have a catch to hook the cable like navy fighters) Straight from Aviation Source: Lockheed's only modifications to the original plane included installing a smaller nose-landing gear orifice, an improved anti-skid braking system, and removal of the underwing refueling pods. The funny thing is that maybe if "Credible Sport" had actually worked (well) this whole thing might have never been that big of a deal. HD [ 18. April 2006, 21:10: Message edited by: HerkDerka ]
April 19, 200619 yr " Landings were made shorter by reversing the propellers while the aircraft was still a few feet above the flight deck." https://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/history/q0097.shtml decent video as well: https://www.airandspacemagazine.com/ASM/Web...-HR/HercOn.html
April 19, 200619 yr Wasn't this discussed in the past? I know there was a thread on it, but I didn't find it. Let's see... HD posted it before, OldHercNav posted it before, and M2 posted it before. Can't we talk about something else? Geez. :D [This is a cheap way to get my sig line to show. ;) ]

April 19, 200619 yr Hey guys! I heard an SR-71 once landed on an oil rig!?! Or maybe it was a, an ahhh, yeah... Hmmmm.... Golly Gee..... Hydro
April 19, 200619 yr Originally posted by Sebastian: No hostility intended. I was just curious if herks landing on carriers were "common" at all. Guess I was really looking for some more details on how they do it is all. Noted.
April 23, 200619 yr AFN had an ad running awhile back that showed a C-2 Greyhound trapping on a carrier and the AF reporter said something to the effect "A C-130 Hercules lands aboard the USS Roosevelt in the Arabian Gulf." I had to chuckle. IIRC they did the C-130 landing on the Kitty Hawk back in the day and they did tests with the U-2 as well.
April 23, 200619 yr Not sure about the Kitty Hawk, but the picture above and the video we've all seen are from the USS Forrestal.
