This really is a good program. However, think twice about using it if you want to study Korean. For some reason their Korean program is absolutely dreadful. I realize it is free, but you would be better off paying for a class or software elseware. Just my 2 cents...

Sadly, the education office said to me that the air force will no longer pay you extra if you speak one of even the advanced languages unless it is related to your career field...eg. translator. Could someone double check this in case I was fed a line? Thanks.

I tried to sign up for it a few weeks ago. It is legit, you get access to the online Rosetta Stone for the time it takes to complete the program or one year (lesser of), then take the AF language skills test at the end. Unfortunately, they either are not paying for too many spots or a lot of guys are using it because I'm still on a waiting list for it. You can also have access to the same program through the library on many overseas bases and I don't think you'd have to take the test then. In the mean time, I'm listening to a pretty good audio program from the base library by Pimsleur.

Two. I'm taking Korean at DLI now and the Rosetta Stone Korean I did helped not much at all... Declan's Korean stuff was a lot more helpful.

Does anyone know if there is free registration for field-graders?

Everything I saw for the stateside program is for CGO's. If you happen to be overseas, the library sign up didn't say anything about rank.

How long did it take for you to be notified of your enrollment after emailing them your application?

Couple days (I assume you're asking me since no one else talked about contacting them recently), it wasn't an enrollment in the program, it was just a form letter saying something along the lines of 'thanks for your application, you are now on a waiting list, we'll let you know when it's your turn.' Didn't give any estimate as to how long the wait was.

Yeah I emailed my application on Sunday. I haven't received anything yet.

2. From the main page, under the Training and Education header, click on "Language and Culture Development Program". This page offers all the available language resources in the USAF.

3. To find specifically Rosetta Stone, under Useful Links click on "International Affairs Specialist"; you'll find Rosetta Stone under IAS Language Programs.

I'd put in a direct link but the URL gets mangled. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I really want to get back to learning Chinese. Anybody used the Rosetta Stone for Mandarin? I see some other people have said their Korean stuff isn't any good.

Additionally, if you're going to an OCONUS base, check out the base library and/or education center. I just found out that Ramstein offers free Rosetta Stone courses through the library. I believe you have to accomplish the course on the library computers, but it's free (which is always a good deal).

In addition, there are other language programs out there besides Rosetta. EUCOM has several available to the base populace and some you can access from home.

Just a quick update for anyone interested, it is actually pretty simple:

Click on the link, fill out the application (it takes about 3 minutes), fax it in, and you are set. Rosetta Stone is available to all Air Force Officers.

I just got an assignment in the SOUTHCOM AOR in a couple months and I don't know much Spanish beyond cerveza and chi chis. I don't mind shelling out the cash, but would like to save as much as possible. Thanks.

Dude, the above processes only take a few days at most (the course is online). You'll get it just as fast that way as going out and buying it.

Getting a personal copy isn't a bad idea. The IAS program comes with two strings attached:

1. They'll want you to take the proficiency test after you've signed up for the program. If you're not interested in the SOUTHCOM AOR as a career option, then this is not something you'll want on your SURF.

2. The license they give you expires after a year.

It works just fine. I don't know if it's legit, but they seem like the original copies.

It's legit to sell your used software (given that you have removed it from your computer, and aren't holding on to burned/"backup" copies)
