I was stationed at Komaki AB (Aichi prefecture outside of Nagoya) last year when the earthquake / tsunami hit; even though we were hours away from the epicenter, we definitely felt the earthquake and were joking about it at first until we turned on the TV...then nobody was laughing. Most of my JASDF colleagues from 401TAW were recalled immediately to fly search and rescue missions; others from 303/306TFS at Komatsu were also periodically recalled to help with the cleanup at Matsushima AB and in Tohoku. Truly sobering times.
