  1. Because of privacy for the families that haven't come forward yet to confirm the whereabouts of the other crew members, I'm not going to indulge any information I've been told just yet, but its not good. http://www.wbtv.com/story/18932172/nc-national-guard-plane-crashes-while-fighting-colorado-wildfires This report indicates the A/C and FE have passed. I will say there was 6 crew members onboard. Keep our unit in your alls prayers.
  2. 12-12's drop, which I am too lazy to type out.
  3. I know of a few Loadmasters and front enders that are teachers at high schools and community colleges in our unit. They tend to fly in the evenings most of the time and take mil leave when need/want to, and doesn't seem to be too much of an issue. Thats what subs are for, right? Somebody has to babysit when Mr. Jones is playing GI Joe.
  4. Have you looked at any other hospitals in Pensacola? Sacred Heart Hospital is a huge facility. My wife has been in the hospital for 5 weeks due to pregnancy issues and as far as the woman and children's hospital, its the only level 3 facility in the area (closest being Tallahassee). Might be worth a look at Sacred Heart, and would save you guys a serious commute. We have nurses that commute from Mobile and Destin to come HERE. There is also West Florida and Baptist Hospitals locally. Btw, I've been told that during the T-1 phase you may have some show times this early. With a commute and getting ready, you might as well not even go to sleep. I can't say 100% though, as I was T-6 complete but not quite to the T-1 flight line when pulled from training to deal with my wife being hospitalized. The back gate doesn't open up until 0600 during the week, so you would have to drive all the way around to the front gate. Take a look at a map, if you're coming from Mobile and the back gate isn't an option, you are driving the highway all the way to the north part of Pensacola and then its stop and go traffic from the exit. I live on base and to get to the north part of town near the mall/hospital (civilization), its only about 10 miles but can take 35-45 minutes with light traffic.
  5. I took my MacBook and it was fine. I honestly hardly used it besides writing a few papers. However, there was someone in my flight that had some major computer issues with the issued laptop and they weren't resolved until about a week before graduation, so its a good thing he had his. So bring your Mac, you may or may not use it. A printer is really important though. We lucked out with the printer on our floor but some floors didn't have a functioning one the whole time.
  6. When do you think they canceled this? I graduated AMS (ANG) with a guy under this in May of this year.
  7. Tried searching first, no luck. I finished up IFS back in June. I've talked to some local flight schools about taking some lessons and I'm wanting to start pursuing my PPL on the weekends. I was on the CSO track. Question: Are any of the hours we did at IFS log gable in the DA-20 towards a PPL? The Pilot and CSO candidates did essentially the same flights until about halfway through when CSO tracked studs started doing VNAV flights. If any of it is loggable, what is the correct way to go about it? Unfortunately I didn't write down how long, what days, and who I flew with. I've considered emailing my flight commander that I had at Doss and asking but I don't want to waste anyone's time if its not even doable. All of our flights were tracked in TIMS, so if I'm still in their system, I would think that would supply the information required. Thanks!
  8. Just to note, I'm at Nav school, not UPT. Not like it really matters when it comes to finance questions. However, don't want to be the next guy that claims he's a pilot and really isn't Moving off base might save me a few hundred bucks but after utilities, its kind of a wash, unfortunately. I've looked, no dice. RVing, like you said, is an excellent option, but the wife isn't going to let that happen. She is stir crazy enough looking for a job and laying around most the day in our house. Can you imagine doing the same thing in an RV? FML. RV is what I'm thinking about doing at the Rock though, when I'm TDY and doing it alone. You bring up an interesting question though... if I stayed in an RV on base during a TDY instead of the hotel, would you still receive per diem and the cost of the RV spot covered as if it were a hotel? Thanks again for the responses guys.
  9. Thanks for the quick responses guys. You're probably right, I'm definitely not the first to have this happen. My wife is here with me, so its too late to be "separated" according to my orders. Luckily I'm still staying afloat being a prior and not right out of AMS/OTS with <2 years of service. I can't imagine being someone that owns a house in NYC or another high BAH area and owning a place. If anyone else has any insight, would love to hear it but at this point, it appears to be what it is.
  10. Ok, I'm a Guard guy. Sorry if this belongs in the ANG section, but its really a finance question. What happens when we PCS for UPT/UNT for the one year of training, but have a home we are still paying a mortgage on? If it was a TDY, you'd still get your BAH for your house and a roof over your head (hotel, crash pad, etc), but I know PCS's are different. I live on base with my wife, so my BAH here is history, and the mortgage back home is coming out of my pocket. Kind of a drag. Are you expected to sell your house and a year later post training, buy another one? Or am I missing something? Thanks guys.
  11. Hey all, hopefully someone has a clue regarding my question... Currently, I'm a guardsman on AD for nav school. I was a guardbum loadmaster before leaving for training, but am unsure of how good bumming will be when I get done with training. I've started to look at my options in the federal civilian sector on USAJobs. My question is, am I even eligible to apply for a civilian fed job while on AD? If I am, will they even look at my application if I'm putting my first available date isnt for a year (UNT/follow on 130 school)? Or is it possible to apply and if I'm the most qualified applicant, to get a job and just not start until I'm off AD? Anyone have any experience in this sort of thing? Should I wait or start putting in apps? If the right job comes out, I'd like to apply. I've applied for some in the past and the time between application and interview was super long, and I don't want to start looking for a job a month before I'm done with training and I'm unemployed/begging for days after I'm off AD. As always, thanks!
  12. Ok, the simple fact is the new standards suck. But there are loopholes to everything right? So what can we still wear that isn't addressed or is vague and we know it will piss leadership off? I saw a previous post about wearing tan boots with the green flight suit. I'm sure I would get questioned about that. Anything else to boil their skin? Being an O-1, especially in AETC, is pretty awesome. I love the comments that come from asshole Captains with less TIS than me and love pushing studs around because they are finally in charge of something.
  13. I honestly have no clue. Everything we do here seems to go through Tyndall. Even alot of the support staff that work for the CSO school are attached to Tyndall, my local AF email address is @tyndall.af.mil, etc.
  14. Went to TMO/PPO yesterday and turned in all my stuff with little to no issues. The weight tickets/times werent an issue at all. They just needed a full and empty weight and didnt really care when it was done during the trip. Granted, it is now forwarded to the AF folks at Tyndall so i might get a phone call from them asking WTF I did and why. But at least the local office/Navy person here said I should have no problems and actually had alot more material than most people do (ALL of my receipts) and should highlight myself in a less negative manner if there is any issues. We shall see!
  15. Headed to PPO (the Navy's TMO) tomorrow. It does then have to go to Tyndall, then back to the NCANG, but at least I'll have an idea if this is all screwed up. Crossing my fingers it isn't and I'm paid appropriately because a full DITY with a 26 ft trailer, trailer, and 10K in your wife's stuff that is "too heavy for her to move" and "you need to ask your brother to fly down to help you" has been a royal PITA! I'll post up what I'm told tomorrow from TMO for future reference.
  16. Good question, and this is exactly what I was alluding to in my question, essentially. Utilizing your POV to carry HHGs is no problem. I think for a partial DITY you would do just that, weigh full and empty. I THINK with a partial DITY, you are allowed to carry up to 500 lbs, and beyond that, it should be packed with the movers and they ship it. Just what I've heard. Might be wrong. Ok, if this is the case, I would be good. My third axle (trailer and car) was something like 4,550 lbs. When unloaded, that axle weighed around 4,500 lbs. So unless finance can't do the math (I wouldn't be surprised if they can't), I would not be asking for/getting any weight credit for the car or trailer. Man, this would have been alot easier if I would have just done it the RIGHT way, huh?
  17. wow, lots of responses between the time i posted and my first access to the intranetz. some might think i did it backwards, hell, maybe i did but others ive talked to here at pcola said it doesnt really make a difference whether you weigh it full or empty first, as long as you have the two weights. on the way down from charlotte to pcola, i stopped to fill up the truck, and after a full tank, i had it weighed. that is my full weight. this weigh in DID include my wife's car and trailer and all that crap she had in her car. after unloading the truck yesterday, i took it to the weigh station/fuel. i filled up the tank and pulled onto the scale with her car in tow. this time her car was completely empty. maybe you arent suppose to weigh vehicles on these. however, in no way was it used to defraud the govt. some simple math between the full weight and empty weight of her car and trailer shows about 100 lbs. as far as they know, i had a 3,000 lb trailer with 150 lbs of items in it and it was weighed full and empty. someone mentioned you would not be reimbursed for the car trailer, which i think is a bunch of crap. my orders say im authorized 2 vehicles. well, most married couples have two vehicles. however, we also have a moving truck in this situation, so they are only going to pay for two vehicles in fuel and mileage, so obviously the third car has to be on a trailer being towed. oh well, whatever. thoughts on my chick's car on the trailer and it being weighed? again, i dont think it will make much difference, and if it does, ill take the heat for it. its my first PCS, i got little to no support with questions at my ANG base before leaving, and the trailer is already empty and been returned so its a little late now to fix the stuff.
  18. Searched the forum and google but can't find the answer to my question... We just PCS'ed to Pensacola and did a full DITY move. My wife drove my truck behind me and I drove a 26ft Penske truck with her car on a car trailer. I weighed my rig on the way down at a certified scale, etc with her car on the trailer (3 axles total). We are staying in a hotel so all of our stuff is still in the truck. Do I need to get the Penske truck weighed without the car trailer and her car on it or can I just have it weighed empty with her car on it and TMO does the difference in weight? Seems logical but I don't want to get hosed. Hopefully someone knows the answer as I need to know ASAP. Thanks guys!
  19. PCSing from Charlotte NC to NAS Pensacola in a few months for CSO training. Been a guard guy my whole career and never done a PCS. The process seems a little crazy and a real headache. I've read through this whole thread and it sounds like a DITY move (or whatever its called now) is the way to go if you are ok with dealing with the headache to pocket some cash and only blame yourself about broken shit. Anyway, I know there is no calculator or estimator anymore since the Navy took theirs down. Could people post some real weight and mileage numbers and how much they were reimbursed? It may give some people some ball park ideas. I've started pricing rental trucks, etc and want to be sure its worth my while. Thanks!
  20. Is this the case for married folks? I've never PCS'ed so this is definitely new to me. Will you know before you show up what the hell is going on and where you're living? If I knew I wasnt going to be living on base, I need to look for a rental house off base before I show up (I'd rather do this).
  21. Some only have a residency requirement for a portion of the doctoral program, and the rest require short seminars to be accomplished throughout the program. Whats the discipline? Location?
  22. I'm also curious about this. Didn't see your question answered. I'm sitting at about 2,000 "retirement points" but some of these points are 5 level, good years, some are AD for Training, some are title 32, others are title 10. I've been doing TACC orders the last 6 months or so, on and off, and I'll have to check my point summary but I'm sitting at about the right amount as far as AD goes but with 10 years of ANG points and PME, I'm well over. Anyone?
  23. volunteer for TDYs, TACC is youre unit is getting them, maybe put in for a PME in residence course if you're do. not sure how much time you have to log those 200 points. depending on your AFSC, it could be tough or very easy.
  24. Daniel, heard yesterday that we do in fact have some openings in the LM section here in Charlotte. If interested or want more information, get in touch with MSgt Parsons at recruiting. His number is 704-391-4204. Play dumb like you dont know they have slots and ask. Your best bet would be to visit the unit and you'll be able to talk to both him and the Load section. I know you're not in the area but if you're serious, might not hurt to make a trip up to Charlotte. We (and most of the AF/ANG) is going through some "force reshaping" and we may lose/gain slots and the enlisted rank structure will be effected too. Drill weekends are usually the best time to visit as everyone is around and you could probably go out to an airplane to see what all goes on. Let me know if you need any more info. Ryan
