I would like to take a moment to note that NBC, this morning, is choosing to carry coverage of curling and ski-jumping on fake snow instead of covering the pending war that's about to break out in Europe.

To be sure, Chuck Todd is a complete tool, but for one of the networks (and anchors) that couldn't stop squawking about Russia for four long years, you would think that this story would be right up their alley. Instead, they are making a conscientious choice to cater to their funding stream to serve advertisements to us in lieu of informing the public about the most consequential foreign disaster since Vietnam or maybe even Korea or WWII.

At least on CBS I can witness Jake Sullivan stating for a second time in only a few months that "Americans should go ahead and evacuate themselves from harms way." What a great look. Here's a story about Russia and China using the Olympics as a platform to "partner up" against the West. And no one finds it odd that NBC is airing this event instead of putting Putin on "blast"?? Who's side is NBC on again??? JTFC.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-china-tell-nato-stop-expansion-moscow-backs-beijing-taiwan-2022-02-04/

What I find interesting is that the squawking about Ukraine from outside of Ukraine is significantly higher than that from inside of Ukraine. If you have access to an 14F in your area, they can do some of their IO stuff on open source data to show you what I mean.

I fail to see how this is ever the case. If my calculations are correct, you ALWAYS make more money by taking it as terminal leave and collecting BAS + BAH + Base Pay > Base Pay. Am I missing some detail?

If you work up to the day you get out, you get BAS + BAH + Base Pay + any special pays and THEN get paid for 60 days of base pay when you get out. If you take it as terminal you get out without that 60 days of buyback.

Each situation is unique, especially if you have a follow on job, but for a 12 year O-4 that doesn't sell any leave back, that's approximately $16,000 extra you get when you get out,

Great info Chida. To be clear, I will likely have a few months shy of 18 years for my second look. So say I have 17.5 years service when I get passed over for LtCol the second time. WRT what you wrote about inactive reserve, could I still be separated?

    TAFMS October 2005

    IPZ board: March 2022

    APZ board: March(ish) 2023

I'm probably worried about nothing, but I want to know worst case scenario to have a plan. I would think the odds of not getting continued at 17.5 years service as an EP in a place where most of my year group went airlines would be very low, but I'm also sure stranger things have happened.

If you are past the 18 year mark, even if that’s at the second fail to select + 7 months, you are inside sanctuary and are guaranteed to get 20. It’s your total time at the date of separation that matters.

So this is my IPZ look (March). I will get passed over for not having done PME (ACSC). I'm at 16.5 years TAFMS. So my second look I will likely get passed over unless I do ACSC between now and then. At that point I will have 17.5 years in. Any risk of getting the boot before 20? Haven't heard of that in a while but just wanna make sure I am not screwing myself. I am currently on a short tour collecting gate months with a partner nation, which I think counts as "Joint credit"...whatever that means. I was told it is supposed to look good. but I still think I'm 95% Not gonna make LtCol. Just wanna make sure I can get to 20.

If I’m doing the math right, wouldn’t you be over 18 years service by the time you’d have to get out after the second look? Aka, wouldn’t you be protected by sanctuary?

Question for the masses. I have my 2nd look in March. From previous boards I have about 1.7% chance of being promoted. I know there are differing opinions on writing letters to the board or not. However, I have no intentions of staying in. I have 22+ years AD (prior E), and a job already lined up.

1). If I was non-selected would I keep the final payment of my bonus, because it pays out prior to board results?  Obviously if I write a DNP, that would be considered voluntary, thus would have to repay

2). If I allow the board to play out, magically get promoted, but decline promotion, would I be forced out?  This para in the AFI makes me think if I decline promotion AFTER the board results, I would not be forced out NLT 1st day of 7th month, and my ADSCs would still be intact. “4.1.3.  Officers who decline a promotion remain on the promotion list for which they were selected”.

    TIA

My understanding is that if you are selected but decline promotion you stay in. The only way you get the NLT 7 month out option is if you fail to select twice.

  6. Interesting hearing your pre-Covid experiences with guard units as mine was completely opposite. I was rushing tanker units and they were basically giving slots to any previously qualified military pilot with a pulse. I was offered a job at two different units.

The irony though, for similar reasons I ended up going the same route as you on the active duty side of things.

    Dawg,

Here's my take--this no shit goes a long way to end speeding on stratification.  The question is can we (the member or the organization..you decide) handle that level of honesty?

What remains to be seen, is there a sweet spot for PCSes? Is there now a dead spot in the calendar where you don't want to move?  I dunno, but I am sure these are issues that will become clear once we go through the beta test.

Static dates for OPRs in the Navy has been a thing for a long time. While there are some differences in ranking, etc, the questions you raise are very much an issue when writing paper on folks. It created quite the challenge to give a solid dude good evals if his PCS timing was wonky. Things like moving PCS dates, sending a guy TDY, etc, were all utilized to try and help make the reports look as good (and as long) as possible.

Length of the report was also a huge deal. For example, a guy who had a 1 of 10 with 12 months on his report carried a helluva lot more weight at boards as a guy who was 1 of 10 with only 5 months. In other words, will a CRO report help/hurt/no difference on a guy, since he’ll still also have to do a report at the static date.

I suspect this will be an ongoing problem as we switch to static close outs.

  8. I know a few that have done it. The squadrons will put out messages for hiring boards, which are typically twice a year. The actual process is fairly close to how it is to join the AF reserve, with a few differences here and there.

I keep in touch with a lot of my old Navy bros, shoot me a PM and I’ll try to link you up with someone.

It’s been awhile, but my staff work was at least 85% classified, and a fair amount of that was TS/SCI.

I did know a couple of guys in special access programs that had secure phones at home, is that done these days?

Can classified work can be be done from home in today’s Air Force?n

It is possible to do classified work at home but from my experience you either gotta be really special or really senior.

Exiting NATO is a terrible idea. I want ACGU on my side first, then the rest of NATO shortly after. I sure as hell don’t want China seizing more influence there.

In todays climate that’s the key point. Look at what China is trying to (and somewhat accomplishing) in Africa. If the US was to exit NATO you can guarantee that the Chinese would be all over it trying to push their influence.

Hey all, this seems like the appropriate place to ask this question.

I'm an active guy in an older tanker platform and I'm not enjoying it. I'd like to leave the tanker world at the conclusion of this assignment. I'll even go back to UPT for an assignment, but I'd rather still stay on the operational side. I do NOT want to go back to the tanker (or to the KC-46). Are there crossflow opportunities out there for tanker guys? Thanks!

    Go U-2s.

Gets you out of MAF, keeps you operational, and you get to fly the U-2 and the T-38.

Anyone know of Army helicopter pilots in the airlines? If so, how did that transition go?

I know a quite a few helo types in the regionals, only a couple in the majors. The dudes in the majors now spent a good bit of time flying regionals, and one was a contract ISR bubba after helos.

Look, I'll take weather down to mins any day of the week (what can I say, I'm a badass), but if you put a PIC's name on the flight authorization, then the decision to go or not yours; it's his. Doesn't matter if you think he's being weak, or isn't living up to his qualification level, or whatever else. The only opinion that matters is the PIC's. Doesn't matter if it's 300-3/4 or CAVOK. It's his prerogative.

Either cut a new authorization with a new PIC, or deal with it. You don't like how he makes decisions? Stop putting him on flights. Maybe there's another conversation to be had with that guy's unit commander, but lol if he's a guard dude, because nobody is going to believe some deployed active duty DO nerd over one of their own experienced EPs.

Using the weather example above, if a PIC says no to flying with 300 & 3/4 when the mins are 200 & 1/2, I’ll back up his decision and he doesn’t fly that day. I’d also recommend he lose his PIC designation and needs to go through requal.

Exactly that mentality is why military leadership is so bad. What you described is a lack of accountability to the vision. It comes from the mindset in the military that the right professional education and career "broadening" will produce good leaders, when in fact, for a lot of people who make it to Sq/CC and above, they just don't have what it takes.

You can't run a huge organization without delegating, and delegating is an ongoing process. Keep cycling through people until you find the right one. But in the military we instead we cycle leaders out every two years regardless and "let [them] loose to figure it out" for that short amount of time. The results speak for themselves. Figuring out how to solve a SQ/GP/WG specific problem as the leader of that organization is great. Figuring out your own interpretation of the executive vision is not. Comply or step aside.

    An example:

    https://www.507arw.afrc.af.mil/About-Us/Biographies/Display/Article/2409725/colonel-michael-b-parks/

This guy got one of the worst climate assessment surveys in the AF when he was SQ/CC. 44 pages of comments of I remember correctly, almost entirely negative. I've never seen such a united disdain for a commander from the whole squadron, even the ones he was pushing for future command. Yet there he is... Rewarded. There are plenty of examples.

Ah, I think I see the disconnect, as I actually agree with you. I’m not saying don’t hold them accountable, if someone is a piece of shit then fire them. The way your previous post read (to me, at least) is we should fire people if they don’t exactly adhere to their bosses vision.

One of the biggest failures I’ve seen (in two different branches now) is an unwillingness to tell someone they suck, and to actually document it. Instead, they write them a glowing evaluation and send them on their way.

I never once saw a general who held his subordinate generals accountable to their leadership vision. I'm not sure you could find a more revered leader than Welsh as CSAF, yet for all his talk of "if it doesn't make sense, we don't do it," he never fired a general or O-6 who ignored that philosophy within their own command. And there were plenty to make examples of.

It might be the single greatest leadership failing of the AF. Wing commanders and above are only held accountable if they do something illegal or something that generated publicity.

That’s a slippery slope. Fire someone beneath you for not ‘following your vision’ is, to me, the very definition of intrusive leadership. Give a vision, give an intent, and let your people loose to figure it out.

I was just researching using my post 9/11 GI BIll to go get my Helicopter rating.  Seems as if it would fully cover it...hmm.

Considering the cost of flying helicopters, that sounds like a good deal.

If you have a DOS approved before a boards record end date but after it convenes do you still have to meet the board? For example, do I have to do a PRF if my DOS is after my board date but it is approved before PRFs are do?

Why not just send it back blank? They can’t force you to fill it out.

You should get paid at least for the truck rental, tolls, packing materials, etc if you have the receipts. And if you itemize on your taxes, claim the difference between your moving cost and what the gov paid you for the move.

That’s not how it works. The expenses reduce the taxable amount, you’re not reimbursed the expense cost outright. Without weight tickets there is no amount to be paid and then deduct expenses from.

I worked admin for several years with weight and I don’t ever recall someone not having weight tickets. From what I can recall of the JTR, the only option I can think of is either reweighing everything or just deducting it from taxes.
