I'm thinking about deleting the video and rescinding the application so my name and face don't  get tarnished by a stupid decision. Getting old though so this is probably my last Alabama board I can be eligible to apply to. Really kicking myself for doing that I hope it doesn't ruin my chances but gosh damn what was I thinking?

Don’t do that. Submit an updated application if you have to but rescinding the whole thing isn’t the way to go. Even if you think the video hurts you, it’s not gonna hurt you as bad as having no video or application at all.

Also if you’re worried about other units out there seeing it, you can change the privacy setting on there from public to “unlisted” so that only people with the link can see it.

So I posted my video to the 100th fighter squadron and explained why I want to be a fighter pilot, in part because I would rather be in an aircraft that has ejection seats just in case as opposed to being in a cargo aircraft in an emergency that has no ejection seats and everyone goes down with it. I realize now that saying that might not be the best tact and wanted to get your guys' opinions on what I said, won't be saying it on future videos that's for sure!

Probably depends on your tone. If you said it in a kind of funny way I don’t think they’d hold that against you and might like it depending on your delivery. If you were dead serious, maybe not the best idea lol.

Was about to go to bed and checked, I got mine as well, really wishing I’d paid for the consulting.

I made some mistakes that a couple of guys on here have helped me fix for my upcoming submissions, so hopefully that makes a difference for these upcoming boards!

Definitely, I hope so too! Plus they offered to give us feedback, so hopefully that'll help us out.

Between that and all the excellent communication they've provided, they seem like a pretty rad group of dudes. Big congrats to whoever gets picked up!

Now to finally delete that video!

I have 0 views on my youtube video. My app didn't even make it past the initial screening to get my video watched haha. Why am I even trying for fighter units, life would be so much simpler if I just applied to heavy units 🤪

Have you gotten any feedback from anybody on your application package, whether it be board members or people around here?

Not yet, and I’m not sure they will with the number of applications.

This post just gave me the impression that they’d heard from the recruiters that they’d sent notification to selectees.

Ooh sorry, I misunderstood you. In any case, hopefully they do get back to us so we can delete those YouTube videos already, lol.

Now I'm gonna go ahead and clean up all these random downvotes that just rolled through here...

You have a reference for where #3 happened? I’m not sure how other states work, but in Texas the school districts set their local property tax rates. They had a law for a while where rich districts were actually required to give money to the poorer districts.

Standardized testing is a joke but I think this grand plan is a bit much. People already are picky about where they live in order to be in the “best” districts. This is one reason bad schools get worse, people up and move somewhere with better schools and the students left behind are those without the means to do so or whose parents really don’t care about their education. How would being able to choose a school not based on your address be a bad thing? As I mentioned earlier, it already happens with charter schools that are government funded.

I couldn’t tell you to what degree they do this on a state level, because every state is different. There was a similar trait in No Child Left Behind, which withheld education grants if states didn’t implement standardized tests, and rewarded districts that performed exceptionally. The idea behind it sounded noble - setting high standards and rewarding high performance sounds great, but in practice it just led to higher funding disparities.

Some places also use it to determine teacher pay, which leads to the same outcome. Underperforming schools then can’t afford to hire more good teachers, and hence that keeps the performance down. Meanwhile, private schools CAN afford to pay teachers well, especially if you’re having the government pay to let kids go to them...

Anyway, kids getting stuck in crappy schools is absolutely a problem. I just don’t think gutting the public education system and diverting all that money to private businesses is the way to go. There are all kinds of countries out there with kids getting way better educations than ours that didn’t have to resort to subsidizing private interests. We can probably start to emulate that by actually prioritizing education and spending money on our public schools like we used to do.

Bernie was on welfare in his early adult years, then somehow became a politician and is now a millionaire.  No one becomes rich in politics unless you are a corrupt crook.  I’d pay money to see him run again, watching him get evicerated will be entertaining.

Not hard to have a family net worth of 2 million when you make nearly 200k a year on your salary and your wife is the president of a university. If he’s a corrupt crook then he’s not very good at it.

  8. How to use poor urban children as an excuse to enrich private interests with tax money, in 6 steps.

    Step 1: implement standardized tests.

Step 2: make standardized tests the basis for deciding which schools get the most funding.

Step 3: Use poor test performance to deliberately sabotage inner city schools by diverting their funding to wealthy suburban districts.

Step 4: As performance in inner city schools is compounded by diminished budgets, decry the “failings” of public education, push for idea of “school choice.”

Step 5: create voucher system to put more kids in private schools using tax payer money.

    Step 6: ???

Have you been to any of the meet and greets? I was picked up by an A-10 unit with probably the lowest scores at the interview. I also hear that a few people with better scores were left out of the interview process all together because I got one. Long story short, they bumped me into the interviews because they already knew me. They hired me because they liked me, not for the scores.

Get to know the guys at the units before you ever get to the interviews. You’ll interview a whole lot better and since they will already know you, you’ll have a leg up on the guys that they meet just the one day. Feel free to PM me for more details.

So far I’ve been to two of them. The first one was super crowded (like 25 other applicant visitors) so it was tough competing for face time, plus the pilots were pretty busy that day. The second unit said no because I didn’t have my PPL yet but said to keep in touch once I do so I plan to visit again. The 179th didn’t allow any visitors though so I didn’t have an opportunity to meet any of them unfortunately, though I would have liked to.

Did she become a lesbian after you two met? 😉

Haha no! She was just a random lady at the bar who got mad at me presumably because she thought I was hitting on her friend or something. I don’t wanna get kicked out of this thread for being off-topic though so I’ll just leave it at that for now lol.

In any case I’ll leave that out of the cover letter then I suppose!

Maybe save the "Been rejected by a lesbian in a lesbian bar" story for when you are actually having beers.

You can PM me if you need feedback. I have reviewed your application in the past.

Score. I’ve been asking for feedback from the units I’ve applied to and never heard back so I’ll shoot you a PM!

Though to be clear I was not rejected by the lesbian, haha.

Maybe it’s not your stats that is the issue. Most units are looking at the whole person. Maybe you don’t interview well or not a fit with the units you’ve interviewed with. Try to learn something from each interview, ask for feedback, and try to improve on the areas where they felt you had a shortfall. Look internally and see what you can do to improve.

I’ve never gotten an interview. 😕

The stories you would tell your bros over a beer.

My favorite story to tell my bros over a beer is about the time I had a drink unjustifiably thrown in my face by a girl at a lesbian bar. It’s a hilarious yarn. Should I replace my cover letter with this story? Serious question. I’m getting so tired of rejection letters despite my stats that I’m willing to try a Hail Mary just once.
