    Glitch,

I'm a C-17 guy who is nearing the end of my 1st 10 years and I'm almost positive I will not be staying in the AF. That being said, I would absolutely do it all over again. There has been plenty of BS, but honestly all I can remember when I look back are the great friends I've made and the once in a lifetime experiences I've had.

See you on the Guard side!

Me and the guy I got hired with have both been asking tons of questions from people at our unit, but it always seems like nobody knows anything, and then they send you to ask someone else :bash: Were you prior enlisted by any chance? Didn't know if that helped speed up the process any.

Yes, I was already enlisted in my unit.  So that may have helped a bit.  Which unit did you get picked up by?

The consensus from most units seems to be that you want letters that speak to you as a person, or highlight contributions you've made. If you can slide in that they're military guys, then even better. I keep hearing that the last thing they want is someone with 3 letters from guys/gals who don't really know you. As for the airframe thing? I'm honestly not qualified to answer that, hopefully someone else can speak to it.

If I were you, I'd ask for letters from everyone who you think would give you one. Then you just have to sit down, read through them all and pick the best. Always better to have options.

This and this.  Its not so much who they are from, but what they say and how credible they are.  I had a letter from a previous supervisor who an AD crew chief, a previous supervisor who happened to be a retired colonel in the marines, an MTL from tech school, and my current shop supervisor at my ANG unit.

Get as many as you can, and pick the ones that you feel speak the best about you.  Don't submit a letter just because it is from someone you think will impress the board.

They called me about 3 weeks ago (a week before I enlisted) asking if I can attend OTS in 3 weeks (meaning this week or so). That seems incredibly hasty. I reminded them that I hadn't even enlisted yet and don't have a security clearance yet. The next available OTS class, they said, was in January so that's what I'm signed up for. So yes, it sounds like they are/were trying to push people through who had all their paperwork already in order.

I will take your spot this month if you can't make it :)

  5. I just returned back to my home unit from my FC1.  I would say I was more or less "done" by noon of the second day, and was dismissed with an "all clear" recommendation by Tuesday afternoon.  It really went quite well. All of the staff were very friendly and more than helpful.  They are there to help you succeed, without a doubt.  Wednesday I spent about 5 hours at the Museum...AWESOME!

Thank you for the advice! I don't know too much about the reserves, as I have just been looking into the ANG. But for the ANG, it sounds like the best plan is to continue studying for the AFOQT, try to get some flight time, take the AFOQT, then apply to a few different units. Are any of you currently ANG pilots? If so, any recommendations on great units? I'm currently in the Denver area, but would be willing to relocate.

I spoke to Buckley earlier this year, and their UPT boards were cancelled for this year.  Hopefully you can get things lined up to at least give them a shot next year!

  7. You bet you can get picked up!  I recently met a great young lady that was selected to fly Eagles for a guard unit.  She was a civilian with some GA hours, and after talking to her for a bit, she was definitely an excellent candidate and deserved a spot!  Your GPA is awesome.  Knock out the AFOQT and start putting packets together for units.

Hey Folks.  New to the boards here.  Did anyone else put in for a UPT spot with the 114th FW?  I'm a member at the unit and just received a letter for my interview.  I was wondering if anyone on the Base Ops Boards applied and/or was selected for an interview?

I was notified yesterday that I had been selected as a potential F-16 Pilot with the 114th FW Sioux Falls, SD.  I about jumped out of my boots!  What an exciting day!  Thank you to EVERYONE that has been so gracious and willing to share information, tips, etc.  I couldn't have done it without you all!  Here's to hoping things go well, and that someday...I'll have the privilege of flying with some of you awesome folks!

South Dakota 114th FW is beginning to accept applications. Packets due 6 May & info can be found on the unit website. Good luck.
