  1. I just got my notification of Sept AMS. Any additional advice anyone can give would be great!

    It's been said 1000 times, but make sure you are WELL above the PT mins (This means good form). People are being sent home DAY 1 for missing a pushup or two.

    Other than that, have fun - I really enjoyed AMS, the staff is great (for the most part), and I learned a lot there; made some good friends too.

  2. From what I understand, the only part that visual acuity plays is that you need to be correctable to read the 20/20 line of the vision test chart to pass a FC1. The refractive error is more important when it comes to being within the limits, and getting waivers etc.

    Additionally, your dry refraction does NOT MATTER. The ONLY refraction that matters anything to the Air Force is the CYCLOPLEGIC REFRACTION (Eyes Dilated).

    The Air Force will only pay for refractive surgery if your career field requires it, which MX does not.

  3. What are the briefings about and how long are they? I think out of everything posted the briefings give me the most anxiety.

    Both briefings are on international topics, and are a specific time length. Don't bust the time and you'll do fine. There is a checklist that your FC will go down while you're giving it, so it's pretty straight forward. It's not so much focused on content as it is following a format.

    Trust me, the briefings are the least of your worries.

  4. Well, I'll keep my mind open to the idea. I'll do some more snooping around these forums. I just don't know much about enlisted life, which is why I hesitate to enlist.

    EDIT: I didn't read your other posts, seems you're not too keen on the enlisting idea, and I'm not here to cram anything down anyone's throat (sts), however read on if you want some more insight....

    Enlisted life as a troop in the ANG is pretty much as involved as you want it to be. We have weekenders that, after they get back from tech school, we barely ever see them. They do the minimum drills, and we see them for about a week during "summer camp". Other then that, their lifestyle is not affected by being in the unit.

    On the other hand, we have dudes who are always around the unit, picking up man-days, making up drills, etc.

    I would say the number one thing you can do to improve your chances of being picked up by a unit is enlist. Even if you apply to a different unit, having that 1-2yrs of military experience will really set you apart or at least on par with the other guys they're interviewing.

    I was an 8yr enlisted AMXS troop before being picked up. Best thing I ever did was to enlist.

  5. Yes, but you have to take a break from school to attend Basic and your associated tech school. Was about a 1yr break for me for Avionics.

    After you get back and are done with On the Job Training, you can finish your degree and start trying for a UPT spot. Additionally, you're not restricted to just your unit either, you can apply to other units while you're enlisted, and if you get accepted, you just need permission to transfer.

  6. A few questions for my upcoming departure for AMS in January:

    State ribbons.....the uniform list on the AMS says bring ribbons (State and Federal) - however the Air Force regs say that state ribbons will not be worn while on active duty.

    To be safe, can I wear JUST federal ribbons? There's a rule "All or none" also, so I'm not sure.

    Secondly, my orders end March 3rd, I'm trying to provide information to my wife on when she needs to be in town for the dinner/graduation, can anyone offer any insight?

  7. Just saw a documentary titled "Restrepo" about a unit that was fighting in Afghanistan. Wow. Probably one of the best war films I've ever seen. Some amazing footage and commentary.

    The recent medal of honor recipient came from the operation that is documented in this film.

    A must see. - even if you don't like documentaries. It's shot in a very cinematic way, even my wife couldn't stop watching.

The difference this time around is that apparently all packets that meet the June board will have to be certified by AETC (or whomever)...that means going to brooks (or in this case WP), having the physical and getting the docs to sign off on your stuff (usually a week or two after the physical), and then having the physical approved by whatever command authority is required for the FC1 to be complete.

    In my case, because I required a RS Waiver, I did the FC1 in late July and got final approval in mid October if I remember correctly.

    YMMV. This is just rumors of course, so check with your recruiters.

  9. When was your package submitted to the NGB for the commissioning process?

    Stupid question, but is it possible to go to Brooks while you're waiting for the approval?

    I think my application was sent in early August. I went to brooks July 26th, so yes, you can go while you're waiting. The NGB approval and Brooks are separate, as an example I got my NGB acceptance before my RS waiver cleared brooks.

    Question about progression from T-6s to T-38s for a guy picked up by a guard fighter unit. What exactly is the standard that the student is held to in order to track T-38s?

    I've known people who have been forced to track T-1s for performance reasons, and I even heard from some people that you have to be top X percentile in your UPT class to progress, is there any solid information out there regarding this? Any difference in standards at ENJJPT?

  11. Yes you are. I believe Plano means there's little (if any) correction. As long as you have no post surgery visual distortions (haze, halos, starbursts) and your pre-surgery refraction was within limits, you should be good to go.

  12. How long did it take for you to be officially hired? I only ask because I was told that I would have to undergo a commissioning physical at my unit (Andrews AFB) and other batteries of paperwork before I would be officially sworn in. Is this similar to what you went through?

    I was already enlisted in the unit. I had completed a commissioning physical at MEPs in May, for a different unit. I was hired in late June, and my hiring approval came back from the National Guard Bureau October 7th (with no dates, just the approval for commissioning)
