    I suppose I don't quite understand the guard and I'm trying to get a better picture. Are you able to get a full-time guard position for the extent of your 20+ years? If so, I was assuming you serve it in your unit and just work full-time there. What are the differences between AGR and a normal guard position besides the fact that one is full time and the other is not.

    I appreciate your help thus far, I hadn't realized the guard is that much different. If you can help with these questions I'd appreciate it. I obviously had the wrong picture in my head of the guard/reserves.

    The reasoning behind going into the guard/reserves is that I'd like a more stable home life. The reason I can't leave ROTC is because I am contracted. I suppose I could palace chase but that seems riskier to me that it may not work out when really I just want to do the guard/reserves.

    The reason for a non-rated job in the first case would be to be able to transfer into the guard without any problems. In the second case it would be to eliminate the 10 year commitment to be able to transfer into the guard after just 4 years.

    I'm currently in my second year of AFROTC and have been seriously considering the ANG/Reserves. I have two plans based on what happens:

    1. Direct commission to guard/reserve if it is allowed. I know this doesn't usually happen for pilot so I plan on doing something else like a maintenance officer at the unit I want to fly with. Then, when the next pilot board comes up I will apply and hopefully be accepted.

    2. My other option I have been looking into is to commission active duty as something like an Airfield Ops officer and after my 4 year commitment apply for pilot boards at different guard units.

    I'm wondering if anyone has gone either of these routes or if anyone knows how practical these options are. Also, how difficult is it to get a full-time spot and if you are full-time, is the pay the same as active duty? I tried searching but there weren't any straight answers.

    I am also considering helicopters. One thing I was wondering was what the deployment rate was like. I assume it is different depending on the model. I'm wondering if it is harder on family life than any other airframe or AFSC. I was hoping some helo guys could answer this question.

    "2" especially to the first part. Don't become a pompus ass and think you are better because you went to the academy. That'd be the fastest way to isolate yourself from other hard working officers and enlisted airmen.

    Otherwise, despite my zero experience, I'd just say work hard, stay motivated, and congrats! You should be very honored to recieve an appointment there. Remember, stay humble.

    Just because you don't go to Harvard doesn't mean you are a "dummy." In fact, I think ROTC is a great officer recruiting source based on the diversity of schools and majors, as well as the majority of commissioned officers.

    Go to the high schools. My whole time in high school I only had an air force officer recruiter come in once in 4 years. He was there primarily for the AIr Force Academy which the majority of students wouldn't qualify for in the first place.

    Showing high school students who are bound for college but not ivy league material an opportunity in the military could have a large effect.

    EDIT: I'd love to have this duty in the det. I'm a senior in high school going ROTC next year, at what point are you able to do this and do you have the choice or is it sort of assigned to you?

    I agree. You definetly can never underestimate your enemy. However, you should also feel confident in yourself to a certain degree. Now I don't mean an attitude such as "No doubt I'm going to win because of my superior skill," but just enough confidence to perform at your peak followed with the assumption that your opponent is also at the top of his game.

    I don't know, I feel very confident in our military forces. Yes, the Chinese outnumber us 100 to 1, but it isn't always a numbers game. Iran on the other hand, its only real weapon against us would be oil and hopefully not a nuke. I know what you're saying about them being a tougher enemy, but I wouldn't say we are f--ked.

    Also, hopefully we will have more international support than Iraq if Iran is truly next.

    I wasn't aware that the facts of the video are in question. Thanks for bringing that up.

    Also, I wasn't putting this out here for PR to the public, simply for the people on this board (military aviators, wannabee's, and hopetabees). This would likely be one of the worst PR videos to show, I agree.

    However if the story prevails and the pilot took out a large group of these insurgents/terrorists, then this does nothing except get my blood pumping.

    Awesome video showing a nice view of laser guidance against a group of insurgents. Evidently the insurgents were chased out of the "safe house" and when they were on the street were bombed with a 500lber.

    Makes me want to get in the fight.

    I think the navy looks at us Air Force as wussies is because we don't sleep 5 inches from bubba in the cot next to us who wants to cuddle and we also don't refer to each other as seamen.

    The real reason navy hates us is because they wish they signed up for Air Force.

    For those who have attended:

    What did you think of it? Was it a challenge or a joke? What activities were involved and how much PT each day did you do.

    Also what do you think about the ever present comment that the AF 'boot camp' is a resort compared to other branches? I haven't attended yet, but that statement pisses me off to a certain degree. It makes it seem like anyone could get to where I will be, and I take pride in becoming an Air Force officer.
