  1. anyone have any experience riding/racing in Colorado? I'm moving back to the US and really want to get back to racing, just trying to decide whether to go back to dirt, supermoto, or road racing, I only get to pick one this time around (damn kids are expensive) but it seems like CO has a bit of everything.

  2. Looks like I'm headed to Laughlin in October... Is base family housing really that bad? I'm going to be a stud but all this talk about mold and kids getting sick doesn't make me feel comfortable bringing my wife & kid.

My wife and I no major issues with our house. It was no palace, but we were fine for 15 months. I don't remember having any big issues with mold. Worst problem we had was ants, but a couple visits from the exterminator took care of that.

  3. Question about living situation at Laughlin. I start UPT in July, unaccompanied, whats the better option, a duplex or the dorms? Any opinion is appreciated!

Duplexes don't have a washer or dryer, you supply em, and you'll need furniture,so it can get costly; the dorms are easier but I lived in a duplex and the money spent on appliances and furniture was worth it. You'll also need to find a roommate within one class of yours, if you dont show up at housing with a roommate, you'll be put in a dorm, they won't spend their time finding you a roommate.

  4. Luckily there is no annual Boat Driving requirement. Only needs to be logged once and you are MR for life.

But seriously...where the hell is Rainman?

Yet I've seen more than a few go back for more...they must just enjoy it.

  5. Let your flt/cc know early, they can help, but still expect the worst. I graduated on a Friday and was gone on Sunday to water survival. Several classmates were similarly scheduled and had weddings or other major life events planned and had to reschedule them.

  6. How difficult is it to leave every weekend or every other weekend during UPT (i.e. Friday night to Sunday)? I have a house within a couple hours of Laughlin and would not be selling it as I would be returning after training but would like to visit my wife.

Depends on your class, when I was there a number of Flt/CCs enforced a "del rio" CAP, and students stayed local. My class did that for about 2 months.

  7. Does anyone KNOW FOR SURE, that an ACCOMPANIED student pilot can or cannot live off base. I've seen varying responses.

    Thanks!

you'd be wagering a lot on pure luck concerning timing. When I was there students lived on base, period. I left 10 months ago, might have changed, but if there is room on base in housing, plan on living in housing. The policy changed at least twice while I was there just based on how much room they had.

  8. I'll caveat what I'm about to say by seconding that any and all preparation will only serve to help and not hinder you at IFS and anywhere down the line.

Disclaimer aside, I finished IFS within the last few months and aside from the initial academics and the first few flights, the supposed "fire hose" was not that challenging. There were plenty of those work load "valleys" at Doss as well. I was a zero-hour guy coming in, but pretty much breezed through the program and got seriously bored throughout the last two thirds of it. By that point I was spending about an hour a day doing mission planning and maybe another 30 minutes studying General Knowledge. The rest of your days you can pretty much plan on watching a lot of Hulu and playing volleyball with the other studs.

I'm not god's gift to aviation by any means, but I didn't come close to hooking any rides either. My suggestion to all is to simply chill out, and don't fret about studying anything but Boldface/OL before you arrive. You will have ample opportunity to learn everything by heart when you are there.

    Do you give autographs?

  9. I predict that the Redskins will pull a classic Dan Snyder and mortgage the entire District of Columbia, sell half the team, and bring Steve Largent out of retirement to be Peyton's "deep threat".

depressing, and true. The only other option Dan Snyder is capable of imagining is trading away every draft pick for the next 3 years to get the Rams #2 pick and Robert Griffin. Either way the team and fans are ######ed.
