  1. With 6th gen being the new hotness…
    GCAP model
    GCAP_concept_model_(delta_wing_type)_left_rear_top_view_in_GCAP_booth_of_JA2024_at_Tokyo_Big_Sight_October_19,_2024_02.jpg

I guess when the GCAP nations briefed the US military high ups on their hopeful glossy brochure version of GCAP, people had to contain their laughs from a source.

Not 6th gen…5th at best and doubtful it will exceed the F-35 after upgrades in anything except cost.

Remember these people developed the 4th gen EF2K while we made the F-22.

1x generation behind. They can’t define 6 gen

  2. Yup, I see both sides.
Just my opinion but I’d buy domestic if I were them
    - Local industrial base, you’ll need that for the upcoming GCAP
    - EF is already good and getting improvements
    - You have F-35B in the RN and LO capabilities there if you need it
    - Shit is in flux with the USA & Europe, have your own stuff

    A bit late but:

EF is not a good aircraft by modern standards.

More expensive than a F-35 by about $30M with the ~capes of a block 40 F-16 in most regards with its mech scan radar and outdated computer.

Lots of capability gap depending on the tranche and country flying it.

Great BFM machine as it was designed in the 80’s and that’s about its only redeeming quality.

There’s a reason only the Arab states are buying it.

Sustainment is costly due to the economy of scale.

It’s a jobs program, that’s the best thing about it.

  3. I see nothing wrong with this. The USAF has become a jobs program for / of the force.

I want my support office workers to understand they are office support, not warriors, aircrew or Mx so wear blues M-Th….that’s how it was before [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]/ and I liked it better.

If they take this out on pilots, it will get pushback but I think it’s intended to fight the lack of discipline in the enlisted ranks among support personnel.

  4. Did you grow up on a grain farm?  Do you know how easy/hard it is to flip crops like this?  Equipment? TTPs?

There is a glut of wheat in the world and prices are super low for the grower while costs spiral up. I run a wheat farm, if anyone wants to know the market and gripes of farmers, I’ll give em.

A bushel of wheat in 1960 went for about ~$2. Today I can sell mine for about $6.

1960 $2 = $20+ today. Now crops back then yielded about 1/2 of what they do now but the fertilizer cost to achieve that is outrageous control. Farmers produce more, drive down costs, then are forced to produce more due to thin margins.

  5. The timeline forced the Democrats to go with Kamala.

Not true, $ stuff is accurate but Donors flocked once Biden was out. There would have been plenty.

Rumor has it the Obamas were readying Mark Kelly to take the ticket and Biden endorsed Kamala with no support from the DNC high ups as a F-U for being ousted in the manner he was.

Really sour relations reported between Obamas and Bidens.

Mark Kelly v Trump even with a smaller war chest = Trump loss and we’d have a different outcome.

  6. No inside knowledge but seems likely it with tech and operational trends known in the open world
I think there’s still a place for a traditionally sized fighter with pilot/crew but to be relevant it probably would need to be built specifically to always or almost always operate with CCAs

F-35s will be updated for decades so fighters aren’t going away, I’d just expect improved cca’s and a continued shift away from “our manned fighters vs their manned fighters” mentality.

  7. It’s not hard.

2016-2020 was better than 2021-present unless you are a trans/illegal border crosser/indebted student/Taliban/woman unable to figure out birth control/welfare recipient/guy who wants to compete in women’s sports/person wants to get paid not to work.

    Who’d I miss?

Choice is easy to vote for Trump despite him being a dickhead on Twitter.

  8. Reverend!

I can't say it felt like #winning as we watched a bunch of ANA/ANP getting overrun by the Taliban because of ROE and chicken shit civilian and military leaders.  Felt like a metaphor for our time in Afghanistan.  The few employments we had were probably just killing the kids of the guys we killed when I was there a decade earlier.  We didn't have any semblance of a gameplan or objective when I was there in 2011...2021 was way worse.  If we had taken out OBL at Tora Bora and subsequently pulled out (or left when we finally got him), I might have considered Afghanistan a win.   Did we stop a possible terrorist attack on US soil during that time...maybe.   Did we create more people who want to repeat 9/11 down the road...absolutely.  We did find ourselves with aged jets,  a few trillion in debt and more dead/broken soldiers, so we got that going for us...

I remember clearly the sortie I was on in Early 2006, my second deployment, thinking “WTF are we doing here?” when chiefs were on a reflective belt kick and the ROE was rediculous.

I like to think maybe I helped someone make it home but in big picture look back, what a waste of time and resources.

And everyone at the Maj level and below knew it while leadership just padded stats to get ahead.

  9. Have any of you guys felt that the things we're/you're doing in the military, broadly, actually matter?

After 20 years of the GWOT we got bogged and lost focus/motivation.

I think the USAF is a really exciting place right now as we face the emerging threats.

I’m not sure a lot of GWOT raised/indoctrinated leaders are the right people to inspire the masses to meet the challenge. Most of the good things I see are by young smart and intrinsically motivated pilots while leadership fumbles with meaningless qweep, DEI and inconsequential tasks.

I liken the modern fighter environment akin like it’s early 80s F-16s vs MiG 29s trying to figure out tactics with rapidly changing tech constantly emerging.

It’s not just an exciting time for fighters. Tankers, Bombers, anything logistic or space all should be psyched to be part of the changing era of warfare.

Leadership right now is really poor at conveying the excitement of it.

Truth is, I’ve talked to 2 star generals who are my bosses bosses and they have no clue the realities of the new environment at the “meaningful” tactical level.

  10. Just watched "Empire of Terror" on Daily Wire.  It's a series by Bill Whittle documenting the rise of communism in Russia.  Complete disregard of a fair judicial system was a hallmark of that process..... So we have that going for us.

The parallels between the communist party and the democrat party is amazing. Maybe not direct views but the corrupt power dynamic, control of supporters, schemes to retain power etc.

I just read 2x books about communist defectors and how they described discovering the fallacies of communism was pretty much the leftist playbook.

  11. Does anybody know how "reserve" points count towards your retirement if you trip an AD retirement?
Here's the situation, I will be tripping 20 years TAFMS, but will have 6-9 months of reserve time (drills, AFTPs, membership points, etc.). I know I'll qualify for the immediate pay check, but how does that added time - which doesn't "count" toward the 20 - play in? If at all?

I don’t think it plays in. Once you hit 20, each day you work adds to your TIS.

  12. Question for the crowd.
Does anyone know of opportunities that will allow you to collect your retirement, but also retain the ability to go on orders for short periods of time?
    Examples could look like:
    1. Part-time technician that could do things like sit alert from time to time.
    2. White jet instructor (DSG/ART) that can turn a few sorties a month at a UPT base.
    3. A "points" only gig like USAFA liaison officer - not sure if something like that would even qualify for USERRA.
Why? To be able to collect basically the full retirement, keep flying military jets, and also retain full USERRA control over one's airline schedule when necessary.
Just looking to the crowd to see if there's stuff out there I'm unaware of as I approach my date.

Yes, it’s the indispensability program which is a 2 yr TR contract.

I know multiple people who have done it recently, and they are rewriting the regs to make it easier.

You have to find a unit in need of manning and be in a needed career field such as a current 11F.
