  1. Well - seems like this thread has been hijacked by the SOS Crowd. But, if anyone out there is interested in the ACSC/Masters Distance Learning (DL) Course, I literally just finished it a few weeks ago (just in bloody time, if you know what I mean) and here are my random thoughts on this course:

--It's a long one, took me about 2 years, from the time I started, I did back-to-back courses all the way through and even double-pumped two courses one term.

--There are TEN total courses plus your Research Thesis (25 pages +-5).

--Each course takes 8 weeks, you can take more than one at a time (not recommended) but all courses start and end on the same day (the terms are all synched up).

--You can pick (somewhat) what order you would like to take your courses; some have prerequisites.

--Each course contains 7x weekly online discussion questions (forum format), approx 2x papers (1x800 words, 1x1800 words), some courses have a powerpoint assignment as well.

--There are ZERO tests in this course -- all "exams" are papers or powerpoint assignments.

--The classes are all tied to the Eastern time zone (e.g. each week's classes start Monday morning (EST) and end Sunday night (EST). This can be a bummer for deployed guys on a totally independent optempo and battlerhythm.

--You must log on to the internet as a minimum to download your assignment/readings and to post your discussions and/or submit assignments.

--In the end you get credit for: JPME Phase 1, ACSC, and a Masters Degree -- did I mention it is free with no need for educational assistance and zero ADSC gained?

--Overall I thought it was better (read: less work) than the cookie cutter Torou Univ online Masters.

--You get to pick your topic for your Thesis (as long as it gets approved) - please don't be the umpteenth guy that writes about the AF PT Test!!!!

--You have to buy all of your books (or share with buddies that are in the other courses).

Here are some things I found annoying in the course:

--Getting docked a few points because I listed my instructed as COL instead of Col. on my paper cover sheet (I like the Army way better than the AF way)

--Having to explain to my classmates why the GWOT is a SOF-centric war

--Having to explain to my classmates that there is a war going on outside of IZ and AF

--Listening to people who actually believe that the conventional air force is waging war in cyberspace

I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions.

  2. Bottom Line: Moderators CANNOT bypass the "edited by" legend. There WILL be open disclosure when a user and/or Moderator edits anyone's post.

The right to bypass the "edited by" legend has still been reserved to ADMINs (just Toro and I) -- although I can say I sparingly edit another person's post -- usually just for vulgarity (as in the case of M2).

  3. Regarding the moderator style in above post - I can tell you the "edited by" legend glitch had nothing to do with that...

I just had a spare moment and did some poking around the permissions -- somewhere in the migrations/upgrading of software, etc. the permissions for many of the user groups got messed up. Several groups (including Super User, Supreme User, etc.) had the ability to negate the "edited by" legend. That has been removed.

    Enjoy.

  4. Actually, Article 88 of the UCMJ states (and I quote):

"Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct."

Often, people don't realize this extends beyond just the POTUS (as described above). I just recently had to remind the Navy SEAL that sits next to me that we similarly cannot (publicly) denigrate the wonderful members of our Congress...

  5. I always find it funny when a few people try to convince the masses that a certain place doesn't suck. I mean reputations are earned for a reason. How many times do you think you have to convince someone that Hickam or Rota or Key West or Hurlburt doesn't suck? Likewise, how many people have a certain impression of Fayette-Nam or Laughlin, or Clovis -- it's probably for a reason...

For some reason the argument is being convoluted to somehow attack a Gunship pilot's loyalty or an AFSOC person's motivation if they are adverse to moving to Clovis. If you are in the military (even the Air Force) you certainly have to follow orders, but you don't have to like it. It's not like the guys complaining about Clovis need to be put on suicide watch or something drastic. I can perhaps understand the sensitivities of the fella that grew up there and has family there, etc. -- but let me tell you, most reputations are earned. I was at the "remote base" Laughlin with Toro - it pretty much sucked. I did "make the most of it" - drinking heavily, lake Amistad, Pecos Canyon, driving to San Antonio, etc. But that doesn't make up for the fact that Del Rio sucked ass.

After all most Viper guys have been hating on Clovis for decades - could they all be wrong?

  6. Allright folks, sorry about my delay in getting this great information consolidated.

Here is my first crack at it: Baseops PCS Advice Webpage

Please check out my work and let me know of any corrections / addiions / deletions, etc. If there is a better way to organize this please let me know as well. Let's gather more lessons learned and add to this list.

As soon as I get my server / software issues straightened out, I may turn this page into a WIKI so that you can contribute directly on the page...

  7. On a side note, One thing that I have heard (from a very good source), is that if you come from outside of AFSOC, that there isn't command opportunity. For example, a 2x C17 (AMC) pilot goes and flies U-28 (AFSOC), they won't be able to be a U-28 SQ/CC later on. That's as of right now, but fights are being fought for change. So, if you want to make AF a career and fly the U-28, I recommend trying to get it out of UPT versus later on down the road.

Actually, Gen Wurster (AFSOC/CG) changed the code of 319th pilots to AFSOC (regardless of what their MDS was prior to that unit). This also impacted other AFSOC units as well. Bottom Line: Even if you came from AMC to the 319th, after XX years on-station, your code will change to an AFSOC code. Hence, command opportunities, staff (AFSOC-specific) positions, etc.

Like the above folks mentioned, the best way to find out the nitty-gritty is in the vault with your intel folks or pick up a STE/STU phone and call someone that knows. Unfortunately, both options are scant in a UPT classroom -- you may want to ask your flight commander to get you to the right information.

    ---------

    To answer the original questions

"Is it going to be your basic climb, level off, drive for a few hours, land type deal or will the flights be more interesting?" -- MORE INTERESTING

"What are the living conditions like while deployed?" -- This may sound cliche, but if you are in any AFSOC unit, your last concern is what the living conditions are like. More likely than not (I've done both sides) your living conditions will be much suckier than your AMC brethren. In fact, I kind of relish in the level of suckiness that I have deployed in. The reason AFSOC bubbas don't care about their lodging is because we know we will be closest to the fight and that is more important.

  8. T-44 = God Box, and working on getting their planes glass-cockpit conversion (don't know status of the mod)

C-12 = no God Box, we used to fly with suction cups (ala Sporty's) to cover certain gages/instruments. C-12s will fly no-heading ASR/PAR, and no-heading NDB approaches, but DO NOT fly no-heading TACAN/VOR

One nice bonus (back in the day) was that VT-35 (C-12 Sqdrn) did not have any show-times earlier than 0730!

  9. anything in the current fleet w/ 3 props or less qualifies as a "sucky plane" in my book

I beg to differ on this one. :aviator:

it does not count as a white jet tour, it flies for afsoc not aetc

The problem is that there are several different definitions for "white jet" floating around out there. Some folks only consider AETC planes as white jets (including the orange and white USN planes...) -- Others lump in the OSA planes -- and lastly, some folks call anything that isn't an MDS as a "white jet".

The real problem is the Gods at AFPC fundamentally misunderstanding the different planes (and different missions) that we all fly. In other words no big deal if the users of this forum don't understand what plane you fly or whether or not it is a white jet, etc. The big problem today is AFPC doesn't understand anything other than the mainstream planes flying the mainstream missions. Anything their pea brains don't know about is considered a "good deal" and therefore deserves to be followed by a "punishment" tour. <----- AFPC FOR DUMMIES...

  10. I have not had this problem - having logged on multiple computers at multiple locations. All I can recommend is check your pivacy settihngs. Many of you may have your cookies being blocked or deleted each time you shut down, etc.

I have tried both Vista and XP at work and at home.

  11. OK - the search problem has been fixed.

Now as few as 3-character strings will work (including PRK, UPT, C-12, etc.) - However, the change in search configuration will increase server load and users may experience delays (but still end up with the results you want...)

Let me know if it is functioning better now (albeit with a slight delay).

  12. Hotel put it well -- it is informal and kind of a family affair. One thing to note too, is that unfortunately the room is not packed with students from the junior classes showing support like it is at a AF UPT graduation. I remember packing it into the standing-room-only auditorium just for a track select or drop - let alone for an actual graduation at an AF base...

At AF bases there seems to be a bit more tradition and as a graduate, your whole week is a special one with a lot of ceremonial activities. BUT, that is about the only drawback to the Navy program that I wholeheartedly enjoyed!

  13. OK folks,

I spent some time integrating the above feedback into the Little Rock Schoolhouse page. Please take another look at the newly updated page and let me know what is wrong, unclear, way off, or needs clarification. Please take a good look at the MPD portion (I have never seen or done MPD so I went 100% off your feedback).

Also, please take a look at the billeting gouge on this page -- it is somewhat disjointed with gouge dating back to 2002 and 2005 -- I just want to clearly explain the billeting policy, non-A policy, etc.

Any other feedback would be appreciated.

  14. Every extra dollar you spend comes out of our nation's treasure. Spending two weeks in the most expensive hotel in the world because you know how to BFM the rules is no different than ripping three GBU-12s into a revet with a truck that has already been hit

True, however whenever we mention this type of logic, the "bosses" go into their littany of "the money comes from a different pot..."

They are hammering us for parking fees at the airport when we are forced to go TDY, yet have no problem flying around a nearly-empty plane or generating a line to fly one or two VIPS around the world -- and when we mention that we need to be stewards of the taxpayers' money, all we get is the "different pots of money" argument... Ufortunately I think that many units think that as long as they have the right documentation and can pass an audit, they don't really care how the money is spent.

  15. There are three former Wehrmacht barracks located in the city...Patch Barraks (where I spent my time), Panzer Kasern, and Kelley Barraks still in use by the US.

These are the three "posts" where our guys are stationed at (in different parts of the city).

  16. Stuttgart - hands down!

My bro was stationed there recently (and I went to visit) - fantastic area - truly a big city feel to it, but NOT the big military-town atmosphere that K-town has. Lots of stuff to do, excellent transportation system. One of the best Christmas Markets in all of Germany. Plus, more centrally located than Ramstein - so you are closer to Garmisch, Munich, etc. I would give one of deez nuts to get over there... Not to mention the joint staff credit at EUCOM (but, as I always say, location trumps all...)

  17. For honesty's sake - (remember Capt Soft Sandy??) Simply PM me (or Toro) your @.af.mil email address and what plane you fly (or used to fly - for you staff weenies) and we will post it on your profile for you. Rest assured your official email address will be kept private.
